I want to share our 8-day, 7-night scooter 🛵 self-guided tour of Bali as a couple. Exploring every corner of the island on two wheels was an exhilarating and liberating experience for us. The biggest tip for riding a scooter in Bali is: “Yield! Yield! Yield!” Whether at a narrow T-junction or a chaotic intersection, knowing when to give way is crucial. Ride with “boldness and caution,” follow the rhythm of the traffic ahead, speed up when needed, slow down when necessary, and don’t hesitate. This way, your entire journey will be both safe and enjoyable. Once you get the hang of it, riding in Bali can actually be a lot of fun!
Accommodation in Kuta
Day 1: After arriving at the hotel in the afternoon, we didn’t waste any time and immediately rented a scooter to kick off our self-guided adventure. We took a casual spin around Kuta and Seminyak to get familiar with the roads and traffic vibe. For dinner, we chose the locally famous Wahaha Restaurant, where their grilled pork ribs are incredibly flavorful—tender, juicy, and perfect for hearty eating. That night, we stayed at The Vira Bali Boutique Hotel, located right in Kuta and very close to the airport, making it convenient for first-day arrivals. The hotel also offers a complimentary shuttle service and free coffee and snacks from 6 PM to 10 PM, perfect for relaxing after a day of travel.

Day 2: In the morning, we planned a leisurely half-day beach trip to Nusa Dua. The sand here is clean, the water crystal clear, and the atmosphere is much quieter than Kuta or Canggu, making it perfect for a stroll and some relaxation. In the afternoon, we headed to the newest large shopping mall, ICON Bali, which combines shopping, dining, and local attractions. The air-conditioned environment was also a great escape from the midday heat.
By evening, we made a special trip to Denpasar’s famous Asoka Market Night Market, the largest and liveliest night market in Bali. The stalls were packed with options, and the local snacks were both affordable and delicious. We ordered babi guling (suckling pig rice), bakso (meatball soup), and a serving of nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice), each costing just 25K IDR (less than USD$1), leaving us full and satisfied. We returned to Kuta for the night, recharging for the next day’s adventure.

Ubud Accommodation
Day 3: This day marked the highlight of our trip. We left our large luggage at the hotel in Kuta, packed two 7 kg carry-ons secured with cargo straps, and slung on small backpacks for a light journey. We rode a scooter straight to our accommodation in Ubud, dropped off our bags, and officially began our adventure. Our first stop was Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, perched at an altitude of 1,200 meters. This lakeside water temple seemed to float on the lake, surrounded by mountains and mist, creating a dreamlike scene straight out of a postcard.

Next, we headed to the recently viral Bali Handara Gate, a symmetrical and majestic Balinese gate set against distant green mountains—truly a must-visit one-stop photo spot. Back in Ubud, we had dinner at Pison Ubud. Their signature ‘Ubud Dirty Duck Rice’ lived up to its reputation—crispy fried duck paired with fragrant spiced rice, rich and satisfying.
That night, we stayed at Pondok Naya, a homestay hidden among rice fields. The surroundings were serene, with lush green paddies all around. To truly enjoy its tranquility and convenience, I highly recommend having your own transportation.
Day 4: The highlight of this day was the Mount Batur sunrise. We woke up at 3 AM, quickly got ready, and set off on our scooter. The ride from Ubud to the volcano was about 45 kilometers, taking roughly 70 minutes. Instead of a strenuous hike, we headed straight to the Sukawana Sunrise Spot viewpoint. Here, we could easily watch the sunrise over the volcano without the exhaustion of climbing, enjoying a sense of freedom. As the sun rose from behind the clouds, painting the volcano and lake in golden light, every bit of the early wake-up felt worth it.
The viewpoint beside Mount Batur opens at 5 AM, and visitors start arriving gradually, as the location offers an excellent view and is a popular spot for sunrise photography. For those who don’t want to tackle a tough climb, this is a great option for a relaxed sunrise experience—easily accessible by car or scooter.
After enjoying the sunrise, we headed back to the hotel for a quick nap before starting the second part of our itinerary. At noon, we first explored the Ubud Market, where my wife happily bought an Indonesian-style dress for just 100K IDR—a great deal and a memorable souvenir. In the afternoon, we visited the Tegalalang Rice Terrace, Ubud’s most iconic rice field scenery. The layered green terraces, swaying coconut trees, and stunning views made every shot postcard-worthy.
Located right next to the Tegalalang Rice Terrace, Tis Cafe is a trendy spot recommended by influencers in recent years. The cafe’s interior and exterior are beautifully designed for photos, whether you’re sitting overlooking the terraces or lounging by the resort-style pool. The food and drinks are reasonably priced, and the relaxed, laid-back atmosphere makes it perfect for enjoying the rice terrace views while dining.
Although not highlighted in this travelogue, the small civet coffee plantation is definitely worth a quick visit. A cup of civet coffee costs around 60K IDR, and the entrance fee is 25K IDR per person, which includes a tasting of five different coffees and five teas. The plantation has several cute and unique photo spots, so you can not only enjoy the coffee but also snap some beautiful pictures—a small, charming, and relaxing attraction.

For dinner, we chose the popular local budget-friendly restaurant Sun Sun Warung. The portions were generous and the prices very affordable, perfect for a satisfying and comforting meal during the trip. We stayed another night at Pondok Naya Trip in Ubud, falling asleep to the peaceful sounds of the rice fields at night.

Day Five: Early in the morning, we headed to Ubud Palace. With few tourists around at dawn, the palace felt especially serene—the perfect time for photos, capturing the pure Balinese architecture and intricate carvings.
Next, we visited the famous Tirta Empul Temple, a sacred site for locals where many devotees perform purification rituals in the holy spring pool. Stepping into the temple, the atmosphere was solemn and peaceful, evoking a sense of connection with nature and faith.

After the visit, we rode another 3.5 kilometers to the trendy new Instagram-worthy spot, Sari Timbul by Kubu Bali. Known for its large-scale wooden art installations, every corner here is visually striking and perfect for photos. It’s especially popular among women and an ideal place for check-ins.
Originally a ceramic workshop, even if you don’t buy any pottery, you only need to pay an entrance fee of 10K IDR to take photos around the grounds. The scenes are uniquely designed and colorful, creating a dreamy effect in photos. It’s particularly beloved by female travelers and hailed as a hidden gem for photo shoots in Ubud.

After finishing our Ubud itinerary, we first returned to our hotel in Kuta to pick up our large luggage, then rode to Jimbaran to check into our accommodation for the night, The Jimbaran Villa by Ini Vie Hospitality. After a short rest, we headed to the magnificent Uluwatu Temple in the late afternoon. Perched on a cliff edge, it offers sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. As the sun set, the seamless blend of sea and sky was breathtaking. We also enjoyed the classic Kecak Fire Dance performance, with its chanting and flames creating a dramatic and culturally rich atmosphere. We returned to the villa that night, ending a fulfilling day.
The sunset at Uluwatu Temple is one of the most unforgettable sights in Bali for many travelers. The temple is built into the cliffside, which drops straight into the Indian Ocean. As the sun slowly sinks into the sea, the entire sky turns golden and orange-red, reflecting off the dramatic coastline—an atmosphere both romantic and sacred. Day Six: Today’s itinerary was more relaxed, and we visited the Pandawa Beach area. Originally a hidden secret beach, it’s now developed into a full tourist zone. Once inside, there’s a special experience not to be missed: you must buy a ticket for a shuttle cart (30K IDR per person) to reach Tanah Barak, known as the ‘Blue Road.’ The main attraction here is the towering limestone cliffs on both sides, which some describe as ‘Bali’s version of Japan’s Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route snow walls,’ only made of limestone. In the afternoon, we returned to our villa in Jimbaran and chose to do nothing but lounge by the private pool, soaking in the relaxation of our vacation. At dusk, we made a point to dine at The Cuisine Bali on Jimbaran Beach. Day Seven: In the morning, we first returned to Kuta, dropped our luggage at the hotel, and then strolled casually through the streets of Kuta. The roads were lined with small shops selling clothing, handicrafts, and souvenirs, giving the area a distinctly Balinese vibe. We also made a point to visit Beachwalk Shopping Center, one of Kuta’s liveliest malls, featuring a variety of international brands and restaurants. With air conditioning, it was a comfortable and relaxing place to browse.
In the afternoon, we timed our visit to Tanah Lot precisely for low tide, as only then can you wade across the rocky path to actually reach the temple. Once there, we participated in a blessing ceremony led by a local Hindu priest, who placed holy rice and flowers on our foreheads—a truly special and auspicious experience.

Returning to town in the evening, we dined at the highly-rated Naughty Nuri’s Warung Seminyak. Although our itinerary followed a ‘budget travel’ style, relying mainly on motorbikes instead of the usual private car hire, it allowed us to experience the local authenticity and freedom more deeply. For us, this journey was not only cost-effective but also filled with adventure memories that belong just to the two of us.

I’ve actually traveled by motorbike in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, and Sri Lanka. This way is cheap, convenient, and free, and it saves you from the hassle of being overcharged for transport. Over the years, I’ve built up quite a bit of experience. For me, the biggest downside is having to ride under the scorching sun, which inevitably leads to getting tanned or sunburned. But compared to the benefits of controlling the pace of the trip and exploring freely, it’s well worth it.
However, I also want to give a special reminder to those planning to ride a motorbike in Bali: While riding a motorbike is convenient, it also comes with risks. If an accident happens abroad—whether you hit someone or get hit—the aftermath can be very troublesome, and you might face high medical costs or compensation claims that could outweigh any savings. You must assess these risks carefully and never overlook safety and protection just to save a bit on transport. If you choose this path, be ‘bold but cautious’ and always put safety first, so you can truly enjoy the journey with peace of mind.
