This time, I want to share our 8-day, 7-night scooter🛵 adventure in Bali as a couple. Exploring every corner of the island on two wheels was both thrilling and liberating for us. The biggest takeaway and tip for riding a scooter in Bali is: “Yield! Yield! Yield!” Whether at narrow T-junctions or chaotic crossroads, knowing how to yield is crucial. Riding requires boldness and attentiveness—keeping pace with the traffic ahead, speeding up or slowing down as needed without hesitation ensures a safe and smooth journey. Once you master this, riding in Bali can become a truly joyful experience!
Staying in Kuta
Day One: After arriving at our hotel in the afternoon, we wasted no time and rented a scooter to kick off our free-spirited adventure. We casually roamed around Kuta and Seminyak to familiarize ourselves with the roads and traffic atmosphere. For dinner, we chose the locally renowned Wahaha Restaurant, famous for its flavorful and tender pork ribs, perfect for a hearty meal. We stayed at The Vira Bali Boutique Hotel, conveniently located in Kuta near the airport, ideal for travelers just arriving. The hotel thoughtfully offers free shuttle services and complimentary coffee and snacks from 6 PM to 10 PM, allowing us to unwind after a day of travel.

Day Two: In the morning, we enjoyed a leisurely half-day beach trip to Nusa Dua. The beach here is clean, the sea water crystal clear, and the atmosphere more serene than Kuta or Canggu, making it perfect for a stroll and relaxation. In the afternoon, we visited the new large shopping mall ICON Bali, which combines shopping, dining, and sightseeing, offering a cool, air-conditioned retreat from the midday heat.
In the evening, we made a special trip to the famous Asoka Market Night Market in Denpasar, Bali’s largest and liveliest night market. The stalls were abundant, offering affordable and delicious local snacks. We tried roast suckling pig rice, meatball soup (Bakso), and Indonesian fried rice (Nasi Goreng), each costing just 25K IDR (less than USD$2), satisfying both our hunger and taste buds. We returned to Kuta for the night, recharging for the next day’s adventures.
Editor’s Note: Asoka Market is often grouped together with the neighboring Kereneng Night Market, forming a bustling night market area with thousands of stalls. From authentic Babi Guling (roast pork) to vibrant batik fabrics, handmade tableware, snacks, and various desserts, everything is available. Tourists start pouring in from 4 PM, entering a small universe of food and culture, making it incredibly lively.

Ubud Accommodation
Day 3: This day marked the highlight of our trip. We left our large luggage at our hotel in Kuta, taking only two 7 kg carry-on bags securely fastened with cargo straps and a small backpack for a light journey. We rode our scooter straight to our accommodation in Ubud, dropped off our luggage, and officially began our itinerary. Our first stop was Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, located at an altitude of 1200 meters. This lakeside temple seemed to float on the water, surrounded by mountains and mist, creating a postcard-perfect scene.
The temple was enveloped in mist that day.
Next, we visited the recently Instagram-famous Bali Handara Gate, where the symmetrical Balinese gate paired with distant green mountains made it a must-visit spot for photos. Back in Ubud, we chose Pison Ubud for dinner. Their signature “Ubud Dirty Duck Rice” lived up to its reputation—crispy fried duck paired with fragrant rice was rich and satisfying.
That night, we stayed at Pondok Naya, a homestay nestled in the countryside, surrounded by lush rice fields. To truly experience its tranquility and convenience, having your own transportation is highly recommended.
Day 4: The highlight of the day was the Mount Batur Sunrise. We woke up at 3 AM, quickly got ready, and rode our scooter to the volcano, covering the 45 km distance from Ubud in about 70 minutes. Instead of hiking, we opted for the Sukawana Sunrise Spot viewpoint, where we could comfortably watch the sunrise without the exhaustion of climbing. As the sun rose behind the clouds, painting the volcano and lake in golden light, we felt that the early wake-up was entirely worth it.
The viewpoint near Mount Batur opens at 5 AM, and visitors start arriving shortly after. With its excellent vantage point, it’s a popular spot for capturing sunrise photos. For those who don’t want to hike, this is a convenient and easy way to enjoy the sunrise, as it’s accessible by car or scooter.
After watching the sunrise, we headed back to the hotel for a quick nap before starting the second part of our day. At noon, we explored Ubud Market, where my wife happily bought an Indonesian-style dress for just 100K IDR—a great deal and a meaningful souvenir. In the afternoon, we visited Tegalalang Rice Terrace, Ubud’s most iconic rice field landscape. The layered green terraces paired with swaying coconut trees make every photo look like a postcard.
Located next to Tegalalang Rice Terrace, Tis Cafe has become a favorite among influencers in recent years. Both the interior and exterior are designed to be photogenic, whether you’re seated overlooking the terraces or lounging by the pool. The food and drinks are reasonably priced, and the relaxed atmosphere makes it a perfect spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the stunning views.
Although not prominently mentioned in our travel notes, the civet coffee garden is worth a visit. A cup of civet coffee costs around 60K IDR, and the entrance fee is 25K IDR per person, which includes a tasting of five types of coffee and five types of tea. The garden features charming and unique photo spots, making it a small but delightful and leisurely attraction.
For dinner, we chose the popular local eatery Sun Sun Warung, known for its generous portions and affordable prices—perfect for satisfying hunger and adding a little joy to our journey. We stayed the night at Pondok Naya in Ubud, falling asleep to the serene sounds of the rice fields.

Jimbaran Accommodation
Day Five: Early in the morning, we headed to Ubud Palace. With fewer visitors at this hour, the palace felt especially tranquil, making it the ideal time to capture photos of the pure Balinese architecture and intricate carvings.
Next, we visited the famous Tirta Empul Temple, a sacred site for locals where many devotees come to perform purification rituals in the holy spring water. Entering the temple, the atmosphere was solemn yet peaceful, evoking a deep connection between nature and faith.
After our visit, we rode another 3.5 kilometers to the newly popular Instagram hotspot Sari Timbul by Kubu Bali. Known for its large wooden art installations, every corner is full of dramatic flair, making it a perfect spot for photos, especially beloved by women and ideal for social media check-ins.
Originally a ceramics workshop, even if you don’t purchase any ceramics, you only need to pay an entrance fee of 10K IDR to take photos around the grounds. The unique scene designs and vibrant colors create a dreamy effect, particularly favored by female visitors, earning it the reputation as Ubud’s hidden photography gem.

After finishing our Ubud itinerary, we returned to our hotel in Kuta to collect our large luggage, then rode to Jimbaran to stay at The Jimbaran Villa by Ini Vie Hospitality for the night. This villa features a private pool and a tranquil environment, making it especially suitable for couples or spouses on vacation.

After a short rest, we headed to the magnificent Uluwatu Temple in the evening, perched atop a cliff with a panoramic view of the Indian Ocean. The sunset here, with the sea and sky blending into one, is breathtaking. We also enjoyed the classic Kecak Fire Dance, accompanied by chanting and firelight, creating a scene that is both awe-inspiring and culturally rich. We returned to the villa that night, ending a fulfilling day.

The sunset at Uluwatu Temple is one of the most unforgettable sights in Bali for many travelers. Day Six: Today’s itinerary was more relaxed as we visited the Pandawa Beach area. Once a hidden gem, it has now been developed into a complete tourist zone. Upon entering, there’s a special experience not to be missed: purchasing a ticket to ride the shuttle car (30K IDR per person) to the so-called “Blue Road” of Tanah Barak. The most striking feature here is the towering limestone cliffs on either side, described by some as “Bali’s version of Japan’s Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route,” but with majestic limestone instead of snow. This scene is particularly popular among young people, making it a powerful spot for photos and social media check-ins.

In the afternoon, we returned to our villa in Jimbaran and chose to do nothing but relax by the private pool, soaking in the leisurely vibe of our vacation. At dusk, we headed to The Cuisine Bali at Jimbaran Beach for dinner. Known for its romantic seafood candlelight dinners, the tables are set right on the sand, accompanied by the sound of waves and the sunset, creating a perfect atmosphere. As the sea breeze gently blew and the candlelight flickered, the moment we raised our glasses together became one of the most unforgettable memories of our trip.

As the sun slowly sets, the sea turns into a golden-orange hue, accompanied by the sound of waves and a gentle breeze, creating an enchanting atmosphere. Many visitors enjoy ordering a seafood candlelight dinner on the beach, savoring the food while watching the sun dip into the Indian Ocean. The scene is poetic and picturesque, making Jimbaran a must-visit romantic experience for couples and families.

Tonight, we stayed again at The Jimbaran Villa by Ini Vie Hospitality, continuing to enjoy the serene nightscape of Jimbaran.
Day 7: In the morning, we returned to Kuta, dropped our luggage at the hotel, and strolled around the Kuta area. The streets are lined with small shops selling clothes, handicrafts, and souvenirs, exuding a strong Balinese vibe. We also made a special trip to Beachwalk Shopping Center, one of Kuta’s liveliest malls, featuring various international brands and restaurants. With air conditioning, it’s a comfortable and relaxing place to shop.
In the afternoon, we timed our visit to Tanah Lot Temple to coincide with low tide, as it’s only during this time that you can wade through the rocky passage and truly ascend to the temple. Upon arrival, we received a blessing ceremony from a local Hindu priest, who marked our foreheads with holy rice and flowers, making it a uniquely spiritual experience.

In the evening, we returned to the city and dined at the highly-rated Naughty Nuri’s Warung Seminyak. This restaurant is famous for its grilled pork ribs, which are tender and coated in a rich sauce. The aroma was irresistible as soon as the dish arrived, making it perfect for indulging. That night, we stayed in Kuta, preparing for the final day of our journey.
Day 8: On our last day, we leisurely explored the Kuta area without any tight schedules. Before noon, we returned our rented scooter and headed straight to the airport, concluding our 8-day, 7-night Bali couple’s adventure. Although our trip was budget-friendly, relying mainly on scooters for transportation—quite different from the usual private car tours—it allowed us to deeply experience the authenticity and freedom of the island. For us, this journey was both economical and filled with unique adventures tailored just for us as a couple.

In fact, I’ve chosen to travel by scooter in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, and Sri Lanka. This method is cost-effective, convenient, and liberating, while also avoiding the hassle of being overcharged for transportation. Over the years, I’ve accumulated plenty of experience, and while the biggest downside is enduring the scorching sun—often resulting in tanning or sunburn—the benefits of controlling the pace of the journey and exploring freely far outweigh the drawbacks.
However, I’d like to remind friends planning to ride scooters in Bali: while scooters are convenient, they also come with risks. If an accident occurs in a foreign country, whether you hit someone or are hit, the aftermath can be extremely complicated, potentially leading to high medical costs or compensation claims, making it a regrettable situation. These risks must be carefully assessed, and don’t overlook the importance of safety and security just to save a bit on transportation. If you choose this path, be bold yet cautious, and always prioritize safety to truly enjoy your journey.
