Facebook group member Mei Chen shares her family’s 8-day, 7-night Bali trip, which we are pleased to edit/repost:
Thanks to the ‘Go Bali Go Facebook Group’ for their pre-trip assistance. I hope my information can also be helpful to everyone.
Travel Info & Preparations
Trip Dates: May 18 - May 25
This Bali trip was a family vacation with 6 adults and 1 child (a 2-year-old boy).
Air Tickets
We chose China Airlines’ direct flight, with round-trip tickets costing around USD$420 per person. Booking more than three months in advance secured us a good deal.
Visa
We opted for a visa on arrival, which incurs an additional 2% fee when paying by credit card. Initially, we considered applying for an e-visa, but it required filling out extensive information. Moreover, we heard that some travelers were fined for listing ‘TAIWAN’ as their nationality, so we decided to play it safe and get the visa upon arrival. The process at Bali’s airport was relatively straightforward, with multiple counters available, each handling about five people at a time. We were fortunate and waited only about ten minutes to complete the visa formalities. However, our luck ran out when it came to retrieving our luggage—we waited nearly two hours, which caused us to miss the sunset at Jimbaran.
1-Minute Guide to the Latest Process: From Landing to Customs to Baggage Claim
SIM Cards
We pre-purchased two XL Telecom SIM cards from the highest-rated seller on Shopee. However, we heard that XL’s signal is generally poor, so we decided to keep some budget aside for other options. Indeed, the XL signal was terrible, almost unusable. Later, we bought Telkomsel SIM cards locally for about USD$12, which provided us with stable internet access.
Currency Exchange
We exchanged USD in Taiwan beforehand and then converted to Indonesian Rupiah at certified exchange offices in Bali. The rates at legitimate exchange offices were quite similar, though some unlicensed shops offered better rates. Worried about scams, we stuck to the certified ones. We noticed that the exchange rates were more favorable between noon and 3 PM, often worsening later in the afternoon.
How to choose a legitimate exchange office? Check out: Indonesia/Bali Travel Currency Exchange Guide
Airport to Jimbaran Hotel
We used Grab to book two cars, with a wait time of about 20 minutes. We found Grab to be cheaper than Gojek and also more economical than pre-booking airport transfers via Klook (around USD$23 for a van). Considering potential delays with visa on arrival, we chose to book on the spot. The cost for two Grab cars was approximately USD$13, but you have to wait for the cars to arrive. In comparison, private airport transfers are the most expensive option since the driver only makes one trip and cannot take other bookings unless you have additional destinations that day.
Itinerary
Since we wanted to visit all the famous attractions, we planned our itinerary in advance and then hired a private driver to accommodate our schedule.
Saturday, May 18th - DAY 1 Exploring Jimbaran
Our flight departed from Taiwan at 9:10 AM and, after a little over five hours, we arrived in Bali at 2:40 PM.
FOX Hotel Jimbaran Beach
Upon arrival, we headed straight to FOX Hotel Jimbaran Beach to drop off our luggage. This hotel is conveniently located close to Jimbaran Beach, just a short walk away. The rooftop features an infinity pool and a children’s play area, making it an ideal spot for family vacations.
Jimbaran Beach
We had originally planned to watch the sunset at Jimbaran Beach, but due to a long wait for our luggage at the airport, we missed the beautiful sunset. However, the scenery on the beach was still delightful, and we enjoyed the local specialty—grilled corn. The corn here is sweet and creamy, leaving a lasting impression.
Dinner - Lia Cafe
For dinner, we chose Lia Cafe, which charges an additional 10% service fee and accepts card payments. While waiting for our meal, a local band sang songs based on our nationality, but they insisted on tips and seemed displeased if the amount was too small, which somewhat marred our dining experience. (Note: This band is not affiliated with the restaurant. Generally, a tip of around USD$3 for the entire group would suffice to keep everyone happy!)

Unfinished Itinerary - Cuca Restaurant
We had planned to enjoy desserts at Cuca Restaurant, but due to delays in our schedule, we ultimately couldn’t make it. I heard their desserts are exceptionally delicious, so we’ll save it for our next visit.
Coco Supermarket Jimbaran
After dinner, we visited the nearby Coco Supermarket Jimbaran to pick up some snacks and fruits. On our way to the supermarket, we noticed many shops selling SIM cards. We found the cheapest one and purchased a SIM card, also exchanging some money at a nearby currency exchange.
Accommodation - FOX Hotel Jimbaran Beach
We stayed at FOX Hotel Jimbaran Beach, which boasts a very convenient location, just a short walk from Jimbaran Beach. The hotel features a rooftop infinity pool and a children’s water play area, adding a lot of fun to our trip.

Breakfast - Bull’s Coffee Jimbaran
Our first stop was Bull’s Coffee Jimbaran, where we wanted to try their famous avocado sandwich, but unfortunately it wasn’t available that day. This café accepts card payments and has a comfortable atmosphere, making it a great place to start the day.
Breakfast - Warung Nasi Ayam Ibu Oki
Afterwards, we had another breakfast—Bali’s famous chicken rice at Warung Nasi Ayam Ibu Oki. The chicken rice here was delicious and authentic, leaving a lasting impression on us.

Provided by Mei Chen, from left to right: Pantai Batu Barak/Pandawa Beach/Oneeighty
Pantai Batu Barak
After breakfast, we headed to Pantai Batu Barak, a great spot for photography. The natural scenery here is stunning, perfect for taking photos and checking in.
Pandawa Beach
Next, we went to Pandawa Beach. Although the beach itself wasn’t particularly beautiful, we enjoyed kayaking, which added a lot of fun to the experience.
One Eighty Bali Cliff Bar
For lunch, we chose One Eighty Bali, a cliffside bar where the food is reasonably priced. We ordered quite a few dishes to meet the minimum spend. Besides the delicious food, there’s also an infinity pool where you can enjoy the stunning views while dining. It’s recommended to book in advance, and credit card payments are accepted here.

Uluwatu Temple / Kecak Fire Dance

Provided by Mei Chen: Uluwatu Temple and Kecak Fire Dance
In the afternoon, we headed to Uluwatu Temple to watch the sunset and the Kecak fire dance. It’s advisable to purchase tickets in advance through Klook or KKday, as you might not be able to catch the 6 PM performance if you queue on-site. The monkeys here are very active, so be extra careful with your hats and glasses to prevent them from being snatched.

Accommodation - Prime Plaza Hotel Sanur

In the evening, we checked into Prime Plaza Hotel Sanur - Bali. This hotel is perfect for those planning island hopping the next day, as it’s just a short walk to Sanur’s new port. The pool features a children’s play area, making it ideal for families with kids. However, we were disappointed when we left our pool float in the room during check-out and were told three hours later that it couldn’t be found. The hotel’s service in this aspect needs improvement.
Monday, May 20 DAY 3 Snorkeling at Lembongan Island/Sanur
Breakfast - Prime Plaza Hotel
We started our morning with a buffet breakfast at Prime Plaza Hotel, where a variety of delicious foods energized us for the day ahead.
Itinerary Split
Today, we split into two groups:

Mei Chen’s group: Snorkeling at Lembongan Island
- Lembongan Island Snorkeling The first group headed to Lembongan Island for snorkeling. We walked to the port in the morning, with snorkeling scheduled from 08:45 to 15:15. We booked this activity through KKday as it was cheaper than Klook, and with the May anniversary sale, we got discount coupons along with free photo and video services.
- Hotel Relaxation The second group, who didn’t join the snorkeling, stayed at the hotel to enjoy a lazy morning and some pool time. After checking out at noon, they stored their luggage and took a stroll along Sanur Beach.

Lunch - Warung Mak Beng
We had lunch at Warung Mak Beng in Sanur, where the fish dishes were incredibly delicious. It’s within walking distance from our hotel, making it a great choice.

Meeting Point
After snorkeling, we gathered and took a Grab ride to our next accommodation.
Accommodation - RV Hotel Kutus Kutus

Tonight we stayed at RV Hotel Kutus Kutus in Ubud, with each room costing around USD$13, excluding breakfast. We found it amusing that adding breakfast would cost more than the room itself. The rooms were new, and the rooftop featured an infinity pool and a kids’ play area. The only downside was poor soundproofing, but considering the price, it was still a great deal. Light sleepers might want to take note of this.
Dinner - Pasar Senggol Gianyar Night Market
In the evening, we headed to Pasar Senggol Gianyar Night Market, a bustling local favorite known for its large scale and vibrant atmosphere. We took a six-seater Gojek ride there, which cost us about USD$1. At the market, we indulged in a variety of local delicacies and truly experienced the essence of ‘Bali nightlife’.
Xiao Jie visited another one of Bali’s largest night markets:
Tuesday, May 21st DAY 4 Exploring Ubud

Courtesy of Mei Chen. From left to right: Tegenungan Waterfall/Penglipuran Village/Besakih Temple
Tegenungan Waterfall
Our first stop was Tegenungan Waterfall, one of Bali’s most famous waterfalls. Standing in front of the waterfall, feeling the roar of the water and the mist in the air, was truly refreshing.
Lunch - Babi Guling Pande Bangli
For lunch, we chose Babi Guling Pande Bangli, known for its Balinese-style roast suckling pig rice. The food was tasty, but unfortunately, we spotted a rat, which significantly dampened our dining experience.
Penglipuran Village
Next, we arrived at Penglipuran Village, where the prices of bags are relatively the lowest, making it a great place for shopping. Although the prices are already quite affordable, you can still haggle.
Further reading: Time-Travel to Penglipuran Village: Experience the Ancient Charm of Bali
Besakih Temple
We visited Besakih Temple, where the entrance fee was quite expensive at USD$10 (as it includes the mandatory guide fee). The guide will ask for a tip after the introduction, but actually, the tip is already included in the entrance fee. Here, we also saw various stalls selling mangosteens at very cheap prices. While supermarkets outside sell them for around USD$1.10 per kilogram, the vendors here, seeing that we weren’t buying, shouted offers as low as USD$0.30 per kilogram!
Dinner - AKASA Specialty Coffee
For dinner, we went to AKASA Specialty Coffee in Kintamani, a scenic restaurant where the food prices are relatively affordable, and you can pay by card. Here, we enjoyed delicious food while taking in the beautiful views.

Accommodation - Batur View Homestay

Tonight we’re staying at Batur View Homestay, where our room’s balcony offers front-row views of the mountain scenery - absolutely stunning. As this is a homestay, the room amenities are relatively basic, with each room costing around USD$32. If you require more hotel-like facilities, you might consider Oculus Bali, though I’ve heard the balcony views aren’t as impressive there - you’d need to go to the rooftop for the best scenery.

The view at Oculus Bali is pretty good too!
Wednesday, May 22nd - DAY 5 Around Ubud
Mount Batur Sunrise

Photo provided by Mei Chen: Sea of clouds from the homestay
We woke up early to enjoy the view of Mount Batur from our accommodation’s balcony, witnessing a magnificent sunrise and beautiful sea of clouds. This was one of the most recommended spots of our entire trip - definitely worth seeing.
You can also book:
Batur View Homestay Restaurant
After watching the sunrise from our balcony, we enjoyed breakfast at the Batur View Homestay Restaurant. The restaurant offers à la carte meals, with each main dish accompanied by a drink. The stunning mountain views and sea of clouds create a truly refreshing atmosphere.

Tirta Empul Temple
Next, we headed to Tirta Empul Temple, one of Bali’s famous attractions. If you just want to take photos, you don’t need to enter the water. However, if you plan to participate in the water ritual, be prepared to wait in line for some time.

Cantik
We visited Cantik, a place that offers guided tours about civet coffee and provides free tastings of various teas, coffees, and cocoa. However, be aware that the prices here are quite high—for example, mangosteen tea costs three times more than in supermarkets. Credit cards are accepted.
Tegallalang Rice Terraces
Although it may not be a big surprise for Taiwanese visitors, it’s still worth a visit as a cultural heritage site. We made a special trip to take some photos.
Tebasari Resto, Bar & Lounge
For lunch, we chose Tebasari Resto, Bar & Lounge, famous for its fried duck rice and pork ribs. However, the prices are on the higher side, and the pork ribs have a Taiwanese-style tomato flavor, which is worth trying.
You might also want to try the dirty duck rice at Bebek Tebasari Resto, another restaurant from the same group:

Hotel Check-in, Swimming & Afternoon Tea
After returning to the hotel, we checked in and enjoyed the hotel facilities, including the pool and afternoon tea. We stayed at one of the most value-for-money hotels of this trip, offering many free services and facilities, definitely worth recommending.
Dinner - Warung Makan Bu Rus
For dinner, we went to Warung Makan Bu Rus, a very affordable restaurant with delicious food. However, the grilled dishes were a bit too salty, so that’s something to keep in mind.
Accommodation - Dwaraka The Royal Villas

Tonight we stayed at Dwaraka The Royal Villas, where the room rate includes breakfast, afternoon tea, complimentary foot massage, hourly shuttle service to the city center, as well as cookies, fruits, and free drinks in the room. This is an incredibly value-for-money hotel, offering a range of facilities and services that make you feel like you’re staying in a royal palace in Ubud! It’s definitely the most recommended accommodation of this trip. The room rate starts at around USD$65, and if you opt for a two-story villa with a private pool for four people, it’s about USD$130. There are also two large public pools, a children’s water play area, and a kids club, making it a great choice for families.

Breakfast at Dwaraka The Royal Villas
We had breakfast at Dwaraka The Royal Villas, a hearty à la carte breakfast that included coffee/tea, juice, appetizers, main course, and dessert. We were so full that we didn’t feel hungry until noon.
Ubud Palace
Next, we visited Ubud Palace, a historic ancient palace that’s definitely worth a visit.
Tukies Coconut Shop
In Ubud, we also visited Tukies Coconut Shop, where they serve delicious coconut ice cream. Credit cards are accepted here.
Ubud Traditional Market & Art Market
We explored Ubud’s traditional market and art market. The initial prices quoted here are often exaggerated, but you can try bargaining—sometimes you can get discounts of 70-80%.
Xiao Jie’s Ubud City Guide:
Yeh Pulu Spa
In the afternoon, we went to Yeh Pulu Spa and opted for a 90-minute Balinese massage, which cost around USD$13. Credit cards are accepted here. While it’s not a luxurious spa, it has good reviews and is conveniently located near the city center. We booked our massage one day in advance.

Disappointing Stay - CLV Hotel and Villa
Tonight we stayed at CLV Hotel and Villa. We booked three villas, each with three rooms. Originally, we had reserved three villas, one room per villa. However, strangely, they locked the other two villas and only gave us one villa with three rooms for our group of six—Villa C1. The condition of this villa was terrible: the walls had mold and black mildew, the sheets were damp, we saw two cockroaches, and the furniture was dirty. The overall environment was unbearable. We complained to the management and asked to see the other two villas, but they claimed there were no available rooms. This was the worst hotel experience we’ve ever had, and we absolutely do not recommend it.

We visited Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, an important temple in Bali that’s definitely worth a visit.
Eating Durian by the Roadside
Along the way, we stopped to try some local durian by the roadside. It was the kind that doesn’t have an overpowering smell and was quite pleasant to eat. Although it wasn’t cheap (about USD$15 for a 3kg fruit), experiencing local delicacies is always a fun part of traveling.

Tanah Lot Temple
Leaving the mountainous area, we headed to Tanah Lot Temple in Canggu. Unfortunately, due to high tide, we couldn’t walk over to visit the temple, which was a bit disappointing.

Kurnia Seafood Bali
For lunch, we chose Kurnia Seafood Bali. Their fried rice and noodles were delicious, with flavors reminiscent of Taiwanese cuisine, and they accept credit card payments.
Bintang Supermarket
In the afternoon, we visited Bintang Supermarket in Seminyak to pick up some souvenirs and snacks. The snacks here are reasonably priced, but the souvenirs tend to be on the pricier side.
Potato Head Suites & Studios
In the evening, we checked into Potato Head Suites & Studios, ranked 40th among the world’s best hotels. We specifically chose this place for the experience. The rooms are slightly smaller compared to other luxury hotels, likely due to the eco-friendly materials used in construction, which is one of the reasons for its acclaim. Upon check-in, we received a thermos flask, and upon check-out, a bracelet. This hotel is more suited for younger guests who enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of clubs, as it’s located near the famous Potato Head Beach Club. For family trips, other options might be more appropriate, though the hotel does offer an infinity pool and a kids’ play area, making it a good choice for some families.

Saturday, May 25th DAY 8 Seminyak/Departure from Bali
Flight
Today marks our last day in Bali. Our flight departs at 3:40 PM, heading back to Taiwan, with an expected arrival at 9:05 PM.

Provided by Mei Chen
Breakfast at Potato Head
To conclude our wonderful journey, we enjoyed breakfast at Potato Head. The restaurant offers an unlimited à la carte dining system, allowing us to savor our meal by the infinity pool while playing in the water. We indulged in a feast from 7 AM until 11 AM, and it was so lavish that we almost felt overwhelmed.
Check-out and Departure to the Airport
At noon, we checked out and headed to the airport, marking the end of our exciting trip in Bali.
From Seminyak Hotel to the Airport
On our last day in Bali, we opted to take Grab to the airport. We booked two cars, each with a waiting time of about 10 minutes. We departed around 12:30 PM and arrived at the airport by approximately 1:40 PM. The traffic wasn’t too heavy, and the total cost for both cars was less than USD$13. In comparison, the price on Klook was similar to the cost of a private car to Jimbaran.

Provided by Mei Chen, a father and son at Seminyak Beach
Private Car Driver
Throughout our trip, we hired a private car multiple times, including on May 19th and from May 21st to May 24th. Initially, we searched online for recommended drivers, but most offered smaller vehicles. Considering our group of seven plus luggage, we needed a larger car. After posting our itinerary on an English-speaking Bali community, we finally found a driver who provided 12-hour service at a price cheaper than others offering only 8 hours. His rate included all expenses such as driver fees, fuel, tolls, and parking, and he even provided each of us with a bottle of water daily. The driver was very friendly, with 15 years of experience, and his driving skills were excellent, even on very narrow roads. His English was good, and he could answer our questions without engaging in constant chatter, maintaining a professional demeanor. We were very satisfied with his service, and on the last day, we asked for his contact details, which he gladly provided. He even mentioned that he could introduce other drivers who speak Chinese if needed. For Gdbokink Driver, it was his first time driving guests who changed areas daily, but we were very pleased with his service.

Post-trip Notes and Reflections
This trip was primarily focused on adults, but we still made time for both kids and adults to enjoy water activities each day. We opted not to stay in luxurious villas or resorts because our itinerary was packed, leaving little time to fully enjoy them, so we decided not to spend extra money! Instead, we chose well-reviewed hotels that offered great value for money.
If temples aren’t particularly interesting to you, consider cutting some related activities from your itinerary. This will free up more time for massages, water fun, and shopping. However, we approached this trip with the mindset that it might be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so we crammed in all the famous sights. Overall, it was an incredibly rich and unforgettable journey. 😆
Family’s Take: Bali’s traffic is notoriously congested. Although we managed to visit almost all the famous spots, the schedule couldn’t be too tight. Aside from staying in a ‘haunted house,’ everything else was well arranged. In the future, we might consider reducing some temple visits and replacing them with more relaxing activities. As for shopping, the experience of being quoted high prices and then haggling wasn’t very pleasant.
Will We Return to Bali?: While Bali’s beaches are beautiful, they fall slightly short compared to other islands. However, Bali’s unique cultural landscape is still very much worth exploring! That said, the world is vast, and we’re eager to explore its many corners. We might not return to Bali, but the memories we made there will forever remain in our hearts.
