Getting around Nusa Penida can be a bit complicated, so it’s important to prepare in advance to ensure your journey is as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. This comprehensive guide summarizes all available transportation options, helping you decide which one suits you best.

Are Gojek/Grab and Other Ride-Hailing Services Available?

Currently, Grab and Gojek services are not available on Nusa Penida, and it’s unlikely they will be in the future due to the island’s small size and emerging tourism industry. You cannot use or find Gojek or Grab ride-hailing services on Nusa Penida.

Are Taxis Common?

Taxis can be found at the port where the ferries dock, but they are rare in other parts of the island, especially in more remote areas.

How to Get from the Port to Your Accommodation?

The best way to get from the port to your hotel is to arrange pickup with your accommodation in advance. If they don’t offer this service, you can take a taxi from the port. Taxis are more expensive (about IDR 100,000 or USD$6 for a 10-minute ride), but with limited options, bargaining is difficult.

Can I rent a motorbike?

While there are many motorbike rental operators in Nusa Penida, it’s not recommended due to dangerous roads, rugged mountain paths, narrow lanes, increasing tourist traffic, extreme heat, numerous potholes, and potential navigation failures. Safety should always come first!

Can I rent a car?

It’s highly unlikely you’ll want to rent and drive a car yourself in Nusa Penida! The roads are narrow and difficult to navigate, as anyone who’s been there will attest. Even experienced drivers find it challenging! A more common approach is to hire a car with a driver (private charter), which makes getting around much easier. Since hiring someone to show you around the island is very affordable, there’s really no reason to rent a car.

The vast majority of travelers agree that hiring a private car is the best way to explore Nusa Penida. Not only do you get to travel comfortably in an air-conditioned vehicle, but you also have a driver who doubles as a guide, introducing you to the places you visit and offering advice along the way.

You can leave beach gear, drinks, or spare clothes in the car, and your driver will keep everything safe. Plus, drivers know the fastest routes between locations and can tell you what’s realistically possible to see in a day.

For private car hire in Nusa Penida, prices range from approximately $45 to $52 USD per day. This includes fuel and parking fees, but excludes attraction entrance fees and tips.

Speaking of tips, giving a tip is a way to show your appreciation to the driver and is highly appreciated. If you are satisfied with the experience, a tip of 10% to 20% is appropriate. Of course, if you can afford it, the more the better!
