The Yellow Bridge connecting Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan

Nusa Lembongan (also known as Nusa Lembongan) and its neighboring islands—Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida—draw a niche group of travelers with their pristine blue waters, laid-back coastal village vibe, and unique island adventures. However, these three islands near Bali have now become must-visit destinations. Whether you choose a day trip to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan or a deeper exploration of Nusa Penida over two days, these islands will add endless color to your Bali vacation.

Nusa Lembongan is a small island located southeast of Bali, accessible by a 30-minute boat ride from Sanur Harbor. With an area of just 8 square kilometers, its main economic activities are tourism and seaweed farming.

When visiting Nusa Lembongan, you’ll experience a relaxing atmosphere completely different from the hustle and bustle of Kuta, Seminyak, or Canggu beaches. Here, you can choose to actively explore the island (island hopping) and participate in activities, or simply unwind by the pool or at a restaurant at your accommodation. It’s a great way to take a short break and recharge before returning to your daily routine.

The Enchanting Attractions of Nusa Lembongan

Lembongan Island covers an area of approximately 6.15 square kilometers and can be reached by speedboat in just 30 minutes. For travelers with limited time, it’s an ideal choice as it can be fully explored in a single day, unlike Nusa Penida which requires at least two days to visit the main attractions on its east and west coasts. Lembongan is also the most developed of the three islands, offering a variety of resorts, restaurants, and beach clubs where visitors can easily enjoy sunbathing on the beach.

Upon arriving at Lembongan Island, visitors are usually taken to the main areas of Jungut Batu Beach or Mushroom Bay, which are home to numerous accommodations and restaurants. If you plan to stay overnight, it’s essential to book your accommodation in advance. This way, you can start exploring as soon as you drop off your luggage.

Beach Exploration

Heading south by bike, you’ll discover some interesting beaches like Sandy Bay, Devil’s Tear, and Dream Beach. Sandy Bay is the best spot for sunset viewing, so it’s recommended to save it for last.

Devil’s Tear, known in Chinese as ‘The Devil’s Tears,’ is a rocky cliff that meets the ocean. Standing here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the sea from above. When the timing is right, large waves crash against the rocks, creating spectacular sprays, making it a perfect Instagram photo spot. However, be cautious not to stand too close, as sudden large waves can be very powerful. There have been unfortunate incidents where people were swept into the sea, so extreme care is advised!

Dream Beach is a popular beach outside the main area of the island and tends to be a bit crowded. A morning visit is more pleasant. Walking to the rocky areas, you can find interesting photo spots like rock formations or small caves. Additionally, there’s a cliff diving spot here, but it’s best to consult local guides to ensure safety.

Mangrove Tour

Heading north, you’ll arrive at the tranquil mangrove area of Lembongan Island. This area is typically less crowded than the southern regions, making it perfect for those seeking peace and quiet.

Upon arriving at Lembongan Island, you’ll find various ways to explore these enchanting mangroves. You can rent a canoe and leisurely paddle through the serene waterways, immersing yourself in the soothing embrace of the mangroves while listening to the natural symphony of bird calls and sea breezes. For a deeper understanding of this ecosystem, consider joining a small-group guided boat tour.

Generally, when tourists arrive at Lembongan Island, locals enthusiastically recommend various mangrove boat tours. It’s advisable to opt for a small-group private boat tour, typically accommodating 3-4 people with an experienced boatman. If you can negotiate the price to below IDR 100,000 per person, it’s considered reasonable. During the half-hour journey, you can closely admire the stunning scenery of the pristine mangroves, observe various waterbirds, and even spot crabs scurrying among the roots.

Special tip: Visiting during low tide is ideal, as the mangrove roots are fully exposed, creating the most captivating scenery. Boatmen can also take you through lower water levels for a closer look at this unique ecosystem.

A Relaxing Day

Spending a leisurely afternoon at beachfront restaurants in the Jungut Batu or Mushroom Bay area is incredibly comfortable. There are many reasonably priced seaside restaurants here. Since these are also the main points of arrival and departure, with the ports located here, you can observe the bustling activity during the day.

Nusa Ceningan is connected to Lembongan Island by the famous Yellow Bridge, and it boasts some stunning attractions. You can enjoy the bright turquoise waters at Blue Lagoon, Secret Beach, and Mahana Point. Some of these spots offer cliff jumping challenges. The jump at Mahana Cliff is about 15 meters high, and it’s best to check the tides before jumping to avoid injury during low tide. Check out the Lembongan Island Guide Map.

Transportation

The best way to explore Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan is by renting a bicycle or scooter. Like Nusa Penida, these islands do not have access to ride-hailing platforms like Gojek or Grab. If you prefer not to ride, another unique transportation option on the island is the local “modified pickup truck shuttle service.”
