【A Family Trip to Bali with Two Adults and Two Kids】Fun for the Whole Family! Bali Family Itinerary|Six Days in Ubud: Food, Attractions, Accommodation, and Volcano Exploration Recommendations
💡 Quick Answer

For this family trip to Bali, we planned six days in and around Ubud

A Vietnamese-Taiwanese businesswoman and her family visited Bali. This article is adapted/reposted with permission from the owner of “Let’s Play and Eat Ho Chi Minh City” Originally posted in the Facebook group “Bali/Indonesia Eat, Drink, and Play Indonesia, Bali Travel Guide” Taken from the group, and now shared back to the community

Key Highlights: This is a detailed six-day family itinerary for two adults and two kids, focusing on a deep dive into Ubud—the first two nights at Aloft Kuta in Kuta, connecting to GWK Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park and Uluwatu attractions, then moving to Ubud from day three. The itinerary includes the Tegenungan waterfall-view restaurant Omma Bali, volcano exploration, local food, and accommodation, with private car hire throughout. Ideal for families looking for real-world itinerary pacing and timing references.

Background

For the first two days after arriving in Bali, we stayed at Aloft Kuta, which opened in April 2022 and is located inside Beachwalk Shopping Center. This hotel is a youthful brand under Marriott, with a simple, comfortable design and a relatively affordable price while maintaining Marriott quality. The service is friendly, the facilities are modern, and the overall experience was great (awesome)! The twin double-bed room also suited our family of four—two adults and two kids.

Our itinerary for the second day: GWK Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, Free Beach Club in Uluwatu, Uluwatu Temple, Uluwatu Fire Dance

前情提要

Next, we began our six-day exploration of Ubud!

Day Three Itinerary:

《Bali: Tegenungan Waterfall》— Ultimate Relaxation by the Falls at Omma Bali

🌈 Bali offers endless possibilities, from serene beaches to stunning waterfalls, each visit brings a fresh experience. This time, we chose Tegenungan Waterfall and paired it with the scenic restaurant Omma Bali for a relaxing holiday with effortless waterfall views.

🌊 Tegenungan Waterfall Basics

📍Location: Tegenungan Waterfall

💰Entrance Fees:

  • Adults: 20,000 IDR (about USD$1)

🏞️ Why Choose Omma Bali?

Most waterfall spots require a hike to reach, but Omma Bali stands out for its convenience:

  1. Private Elevator to the Day Club: Skip the tiring downhill trek—perfect for lazy days and family trips.
  2. Stunning Views: Enjoy panoramic waterfall vistas right from your seat, soaking in nature’s beauty with ease.
  3. Multiple Activities: Choose to dip in the pool (with minimum spend), admire the falls, or walk down to the base for photos.

🍹 Omma Bali Pricing Info

  • Non-alcoholic drinks and meals are reasonably priced, but alcoholic beverages are on the pricey side 🍸.
  • Minimum spend rule: The closer your seat is to the pool or waterfall, the higher the minimum spend. If you’re just stopping by briefly, there are also regular seats with no minimum spend.

👣 A Handy Tip for Seeing the Waterfall

It’s just a 2–3 minute walk from Omma Bali to the waterfall, making it super easy. If you’d rather not move, the restaurant’s seating offers a full view of the waterfall—its cascading flow is truly refreshing 💦.

🍴 Must-Try Dish: Signature Crispy Duck

  • Highlights: Half a duck marinated with spices and deep-fried to a golden, crispy perfection. The skin crackles with every bite, with just the right amount of fat—not greasy at all. Even the bones are easy to crunch, making it hard to stop eating. Duck Texture: While the meat itself is a bit on the drier side, pairing it with the restaurant’s three house-made sauces adds layers of flavor. Each sauce has a different level of spiciness, all fresh and delicious, leaving you licking your fingers for more.
  • 🌟 Other Dining Options Although the duck meat itself is a bit on the dry side, pairing it with the restaurant’s three house-made sauces adds a richer overall texture. Each sauce has a different level of spiciness, with fresh and delightful flavors that make you want to lick your fingers for more.

🌟 Other Culinary Options

While the restaurant is best known for its crispy duck, the other dishes are also impressive:

  1. Lemon Chicken: Tender meat with a tangy lemon sauce, served alongside soft potato balls—flavorful and filling.
  2. Spaghetti Carbonara: Rich, creamy sauce with a strong milky flavor, perfectly cooked pasta—simple yet satisfying.
  3. Nasi Campur: A classic Indonesian dish with a mix of traditional sides; the version here is said to be very authentic and worth trying.

🍹 Drink Recommendations

  • Mango Smoothie: Rich fruit flavor with a smooth texture, perfect for cooling down.
  • Coconut Juice: Fresh, pure coconut water—refreshing and thirst-quenching.
  • Ice Tea: Light and palate-cleansing, pairs well with any meal.

💰 Price Guide

  • Crispy Duck: 140,000 IDR (approx. USD$5)
  • Lemon Chicken: 60,000 IDR (approx. USD$2)
  • Spaghetti Carbonara: 60,000 IDR (approx. USD$2)
  • Mango Smooth: 35,000 IDR (about USD$2)

Note: Upon entry, you can pick up a multilingual paper guide map (including Chinese). Walking around the park takes about 30–60 minutes. Mornings are less crowded with more monkeys, making it an ideal time to visit.

🐒 Tips for Interacting with Monkeys

Although the monkeys in the Monkey Forest are relatively gentle, you still need to follow these rules:

  1. Do not stare directly into the monkeys’ eyes
  2. Do not bring plastic bags or plastic bottles (monkeys will snatch them)
  3. Do not touch or disturb the monkeys
  4. Feeding the monkeys is prohibited

Look up to see monkeys leaping among the treetops, while your feet tread on forest paths blanketed with banyan roots, surrounded by sacred Hindu temples. The harmonious coexistence of monkeys and temples brings a deeply healing tranquility.

🏛️ 17th-Century Ancient Temple

Inside the park, there is a Hindu temple built in the 17th century. Although you cannot enter, the moss-covered walls of the temple are already breathtaking enough.

📸 The Secret Weapon for Monkey Selfies

The park staff offer professional monkey feeding and photo-taking services, which require purchasing a photo ticket for 50,000 IDR (about USD$2). They’ll help capture fun moments like monkeys jumping on your shoulders or feeding, making it safe and efficient—definitely worth trying.

⚠️Note: Do not feed the monkeys yourself to avoid risky behavior!

🌾 《TIS Cafe》Telaga Waja Rice Terrace——A Budget-Friendly Scenic Cafe Recommendation✨

“Telaga Waja Rice Terrace” is one of the must-visit spots near Ubud, offering stunning layered rice terraces and thrilling swing experiences that draw many travelers. However, its high commercialization can make the trip feel a bit like an “ATM stop.” 💸

Rice Terrace Fee Situation:

  1. Some cafes require an entrance fee;
  2. Stepping onto the rice terraces may incur a landowner fee;
  3. Each section of the terraces belongs to different landowners, with separate fees.

To avoid these “fee traps,” consider visiting 《TIS Cafe》, which offers a beautiful setting at a fair price. It has no entrance fee and still provides the same charming terrace views—perfect for those who dislike long queues or aren’t chasing Instagram-famous spots! 😊

《TIS Cafe》Highlights:

  • No entrance fee, and the scenery rivals popular attractions.
  • 💰 Swing prices are friendly, just 50,000 IDR (about USD$2) per ride.
  • 🌊 Kids can use the pool with a minimum spend of just 100,000 IDR/person (about USD$6).
  • 🍽 Delicious and affordable food, with warm and friendly staff.
  • 👣 Free-will donation for rice terraces—a one-time payment of 10,000 IDR lets you enter multiple terraces for photos (the landowners are very kind too).
  • 📸 Free Instagram-worthy photo setups, like hanging hammocks in the air—absolutely great value!

⚠️ Tips:

  • Avoid peak hours for a more peaceful experience.
  • Respect local customs when visiting; there’s no pressure on how much to donate, but bring some small Indonesian rupiah as a gesture of goodwill.

When we arrived, our driver Gede immediately contacted the hotel staff, and within five minutes, a hotel worker appeared on a motorbike, quickly resolving the issue and making the check-in process smooth.

✨ Notes

  • Insufficient hot water: While the bathtub is romantic, the hot water capacity isn’t enough to fill it all at once.

Pura Tirta Empul – A Sacred Experience of Spiritual Cleansing

Sacred Springs in Serenity: A Holy Ritual of Purification

On the fifth day, we visited Pura Tirta Empul, a temple renowned for its holy springs and a vital symbol of Bali’s religion and culture. Passing through lush coconut groves, we were greeted by ancient stone structures and crystal-clear flowing water, as if stepping into a river of time. The sacred springs here are revered by locals as a sanctuary for spiritual purification, drawing countless devotees for centuries to seek blessings and cleanse their souls.

Introduction to the Holy Spring Temple: Sacred Waters and Ancient Beliefs

The temple is named after the sacred springs that surround it, featuring over a dozen spouts, each symbolizing a different prayer intention, such as “cleansing the soul,” “warding off misfortune,” “healing ailments,” and “banishing nightmares.” After completing the purification ritual, local devotees enter the temple to pray, demonstrating their devotion to the divine.

Visitor Information & Fees

Visitors must purchase tickets to enter Tirta Empul Temple, and the fees are quite affordable:

  • Adult ticket: 50,000 IDR (approximately USD$2)
  • Child ticket: 25,000 IDR (approximately USD$1)

The ticket includes borrowing a traditional colored sarong, which is required for entering the temple. However, note that colored sarongs cannot be used for entering the water. If you want to experience the holy spring purification ritual, you’ll need to pay additional fees:

  • Green sarong rental: 10,000 IDR (approximately USD$0.30)
  • Locker rental: 15,000 IDR (approximately USD$0.50)

These small fees are not only budget-friendly but also allow you to deeply engage with this unique cultural tradition.

How to Participate in the Holy Spring Purification Ritual?

The holy spring purification ritual may seem simple, but it follows a specific sequence and set of rules:

  1. Prepare a green sarong and a locker, then change clothes before heading to the holy spring pool.
  2. Facing the holy spring pool, start from the left pool and purify yourself at the first spout in sequence.
  3. Skip the second-to-last and third-to-last spouts (these are reserved for prayers for the deceased).
  4. After finishing the left pool, move to the right pool.
  5. At the right pool, you only need to pray at the first spout.

At each spout, follow these steps to complete your prayer:

  • Press your palms together in front of the spout and make a wish.
  • Let the holy water wet your hair, and splash the spring water over your entire body.

The cool spring water instantly washes away the fatigue of travel, leaving you feeling light in body and soul. It’s a whole new cultural experience—definitely worth a try!

Touristy, yet still retaining a genuine warmth

Although Tirta Empul Temple has become a popular tourist attraction, with Western visitors in green sarongs performing purification rituals in the pool—a rather amusing sight—the temple still preserves its local, down-to-earth hospitality. The staff are warm and friendly, with no expensive add-on fees, offering nothing but kindness and smiles.

⚠️ Friendly reminder: Respect the local culture

When experiencing the purification ritual, be sure to maintain a solemn and respectful attitude, as many local devotees are still praying and bathing devoutly. Avoid excessive photography that might disturb others.

Recommended nearby attraction: Pura Gunung Kawi

If time permits, consider visiting Pura Gunung Kawi, not far from Tirta Empul Temple. This site features stunning rock carvings and captivating valley views, making it a cultural heritage worth exploring near Ubud.

Additionally, Tirta Empul Temple is very close to Sebatu Sanctuary Eco-Resort, my favorite accommodation on this trip. Staying here makes it easy to plan your itinerary—highly recommended!

A Spiritual Cleansing in Bali

Tirta Empul Temple is more than just a photo-worthy spot in Bali; it’s a spiritual place to immerse yourself in local culture. Participating in the holy water purification ritual, bathing in the clear springs, not only relaxes your body and mind but also adds a layer of sacredness and meaning to your Bali journey.

Why not experience this spiritual bath yourself and turn your trip into something more than just a whirlwind tour!

The World’s Most Expensive Coffee: Savoring Your First Cup of Civet Coffee

During our journey in Ubud, we embarked on an exploration of Kopi Luwak (civet coffee). Renowned as the world’s most expensive coffee, its unique production process and flavor make it an unmissable experience on a Bali trip. We chose to visit Satria Agrowisata farm in Bali to witness the creation of this legendary coffee firsthand.

The Story Behind Civet Coffee

Civet coffee, known as Kopi Luwak in Indonesian and Civet Coffee in English, is unique because the civet cat first eats the coffee cherries, which then undergo a digestive enzyme process before the beans are excreted. This is why it’s playfully called ‘cat poop coffee.’

As one of the main producers of civet coffee, Bali has many tourist farms for visitors to tour and taste. Most farms don’t charge an entry fee and offer free samples of coffee and tea, a tour often called a Coffee/Tea Plantation Tour. But free comes at a cost—during the visit, staff enthusiastically promote their products, which can feel a bit pressuring.

Exploring Satria Farm: A Blend of Knowledge and Fun

Upon arriving at Satria Agrowisata, the entrance opens into a lush botanical garden filled with fruit trees, coffee plants, and spices like mangosteen, Arabica coffee, and ginger. This green space gives us a first glimpse into the raw ingredients behind coffee.

Next, the farm staff introduce the process of making civet coffee, explaining how the beans are selected and cleaned from the civet’s droppings. Surprisingly, even with just one or two visitors, the staff patiently explain everything with great warmth and enthusiasm.

A Surprise Tasting of 13 Free Drinks

After a brief introduction to coffee-making, the staff bring out 13 different drinks for us to sample for free, including various coffees, teas, and specialty beverages—each with its own unique flavor and benefits. Sipping these under the dense canopy of trees is not only a treat for the palate but also a feast for the eyes, offering a truly relaxing experience.

Highlight: Bali CatPoo Chino

On a hillside, a striking sign reads ‘Bali CatPoo Chino’—a playful twist on ‘cappuccino’ (cat=cat, poo=feces). It’s quite amusing! We ordered a cup of civet coffee, priced at 50,000 Indonesian Rupiah (about USD$3), to taste the legendary brew firsthand. For those of us who aren’t coffee connoisseurs, it tasted much like regular black coffee—still, it was a unique experience.

The Shop Area and Shopping Tips

As the tour winds down, you enter the souvenir shop. Shelves are packed with products like coffee powder, spiced teas, and dried fruit, making it hard to choose. Despite reading online reviews that the take-home products don’t taste as rich as the fresh samples, the staff’s enthusiastic sales pitch won us over. We grabbed a pack of avocado coffee powder for 130,000 Indonesian Rupiah (about USD$8)—consider it a small entry fee for the ‘free’ tour!

Special Suggestion: Other Options

If you feel uncomfortable with a pushy shopping environment, consider visiting Bali Pulina. According to online sources, there is an entrance fee of 100,000 Indonesian Rupiah (about USD$6), which includes coffee and tea tasting along with snacks, offering a more relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. It’s also said that the scenery there is quite beautiful, providing a different kind of experience.

A Unique Memory of a Cup of Luwak Coffee

Taking a break during the trip to savor a cup of luwak coffee—though for us ‘coffee novices,’ the flavors might be hard to distinguish—witnessing the production process and learning the story behind the beans is still a worthwhile experience. This cup of ‘the world’s most expensive coffee’ offers not just a taste sensation but also a part of Bali’s unique culture.

Are you curious about the taste of this coffee too? When you’re in Ubud, why not experience it for yourself!

Day 5 Accommodation: A Hot Spring B&B with Only 4 Rooms by the Volcano🏡 《The Lava Bali and Hot Spring》✨

🚘 Heading north, we arrived at the ‘Kintamani’ area in the northernmost part of Bali. The volcanic scenery here is breathtaking and unforgettable 😌.

🌋 Mount Batur is Bali’s second-largest active volcano. Though not as towering as the largest, ‘Mount Agung,’ the landscape here—with its mountains and waters—far surpasses Agung’s stark and majestic grandeur 💗. Even more enticing are the ‘natural, colorless, and odorless’ hot springs♨️, embraced by the stunning views of ‘Kintamani,’ allowing you to fully relax your body and mind.

✖️ We skipped the two popular hot spring resorts and chose a cozy B&B with only 4 rooms, 《The Lava Bali and Hot Spring》. The atmosphere here is simple and laid-back, filled with a serene vibe that makes you want to linger quietly💕.

⬆️ Sitting at the B&B’s doorstep, zoning out and emptying my mind, the sense of coziness instantly soared😊; climbing the steps to the hot spring pool area at the B&B’s highest point👣, soaking in the warm water with the magnificent panoramic view of Mount Batur before me—it was breathtakingly beautiful✨.

❄️ In the early morning or evening, the cool air makes the warmth of the hot spring even more comforting🔥, and with the peaceful, tourist-free environment, it’s entirely your own unique Bali experience👏.

🏡 Guesthouse Experience

Staying at The Lava Bali and Hot Spring may not be luxurious, but every detail shows the host’s thoughtfulness ❤️:

  • The rooms are simple yet stylish, with small touches that make a big difference.
  • The bathroom is spacious with plenty of hot water.
  • The host speaks fluent English and quickly resolves any guest questions👍.

💰 Pricing & Services

🔹 600,000 IDR /room/night (approx. USD$39)

🔹 150,000 IDR /extra bed/night (approx. USD$10) ©️Rate does not include breakfast✖️🍽

Although the guesthouse doesn’t serve meals, you won’t have trouble finding food:

  • There’s a convenience store right at the entrance, perfect for grabbing snacks and drinks anytime💯.
  • There are several local eateries nearby with very affordable prices 🫶.
  • This time we also tried the nearby “JFC Indonesian KFC” and a local specialty “Terang Bulan (Martabak Manis)” (recommended flavors: peanut, chocolate, sesame, and cheese).

Staying away from crowded tourist areas like this lets you experience a different side of Bali life—simple yet wonderful 😊.

Day 6 Accommodation Recommendation: Sebatu Sanctuary Eco-resort

While other travelers linger in Ubud’s private pool villas, we chose to venture further and stay in a luxurious bamboo treehouse perched among the treetops—an adventurous escape into nature!

If you’re traveling in Bali, I highly recommend using Gede’s private car service! Gede is a very professional and patient driver—whether it’s a family trip or general sightseeing, he provides thoughtful service.

我們大力推薦的包車服務

📋 Service Highlights:

  • Arrives on time (or even early) as agreed
  • Notifies you in advance if there’s any delay (due to traffic)
  • Prioritizes safety, even shielding you from traffic when getting in and out of the car
  • Always rushes ahead to check in for you upon arriving at the hotel
  • Goes out of his way to help with any questions (lost items, purchases, sharing information)
  • If you need to book tours, he’ll ask around to try and get you the best price
  • Handles the first three steps after landing seamlessly: airport pickup, helping you buy a local SIM card at a nearby shop (you can use the airport’s free Wi-Fi to contact him first), and currency exchange at a legitimate exchange center (no scams)
  • Advises against visiting overpriced tourist traps (Gede doesn’t take kickbacks, so some popular spots won’t allow him to accompany guests inside)
  • Gede will accompany you into certain attractions (locals get free entry at some spots), serving as a guide to explain the history and stories of the sites.
  • On this trip to Uluwatu Temple, the cliffs, and the sunset, Gede stayed close by us the whole time, helping take photos and keeping a sharp eye out to prevent monkeys from snatching our belongings.
  • Remember! Be a considerate traveler. Gede is a private driver, not a personal tour guide. If he doesn’t accompany you into the attractions, that’s perfectly reasonable. Don’t make excessive demands—put yourself in his shoes.
  • Throughout this trip, we never insisted that Gede join us for visits or provide commentary. We let things flow naturally. Extra company was appreciated, but its absence was perfectly fine and expected.
  • As for meals, afternoon tea, or scenic coffee spots—places tourists like you and me visit—prices are generally not low. Gede typically drops you off and then leaves, waiting for your call.
  • For Gede, who doesn’t earn much, these places are extravagantly priced. Since we got along with him like friends, we often invited him to join us. He would always refuse to eat at restaurants, claiming he was full, and occasionally had a drink with us, always choosing the cheapest option.
