【Two Adults, Two Kids: A Bali Family Travelogue】A Complete Family Adventure! Bali Family Itinerary – Six Days in Ubud: Food, Attractions, Accommodation, and Volcano Exploration
💡 Quick Answer

For this Bali family trip, we planned six days in and around Ubud

A Vietnamese-Taiwanese sister and her family traveled to Bali. This article is adapted and republished with permission from the owner of “Let’s Play and Eat Ho Chi Minh City”. Originally posted in the Facebook group “Bali/Indonesia Food & Travel Guide”. Taken from the group, now shared back to the community.

Key Highlights: This is a detailed six-day family travelogue for two adults and two kids, diving deep into Ubud. The first two nights were spent at Aloft Kuta, connecting to GWK Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park and Uluwatu attractions. From day three onward, we moved to Ubud, covering the Tegenungan waterfall-view restaurant Omma Bali, volcano exploration, local food, and accommodation—all with a private driver. Perfect for families looking for real-life itinerary pacing and timing tips.

Background

For the first two days in Bali, we stayed at Aloft Kuta, which opened in April 2022 inside Beachwalk Shopping Center. This hotel is a youthful brand under Marriott, with a simple and comfortable design, a relatively affordable price while maintaining Marriott quality, friendly service, and modern facilities—overall a great (and satisfying!) experience. The twin room with two double beds perfectly suited our family of four.

On day two, our itinerary was: GWK Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, Uluwatu Free Beach Club, Uluwatu Temple, Uluwatu Fire Dance

Day Three Itinerary:

《Bali: Tegenungan Waterfall》- Ultimate Relaxation by the Falls at Omma Bali

🌊 Tegenungan Waterfall Basics

📍Location: Tegenungan Waterfall

💰Entrance Fees:

  • Adults: 20,000 IDR (about USD$1)

🏞️ Why Choose Omma Bali?

Most waterfall spots require a hike to reach, but Omma Bali stands out for its convenience:

  1. Private Elevator to the Day Club: Skip the tiring downhill trek—perfect for lazy days and family trips.
  2. Stunning Views: Sit in the restaurant and overlook the magnificent waterfall, enjoying nature with ease.
  3. Multiple Ways to Play: Choose to enter the pool (with minimum spend), admire the waterfall, or walk down to the base for photos.

🍹 Omma Bali: Pricing Info

  • Non-alcoholic drinks and meals are reasonably priced, but alcoholic beverages are on the higher end 🍸.
  • Minimum spend rule: The closer your seat is to the pool or waterfall, the higher the minimum spend. If you’re just stopping by briefly, there are also regular seats with no minimum spend.

👣 A Quick Tip for Seeing the Waterfall

It’s just a 2-3 minute walk from Omma Bali to the waterfall—super easy. If you’d rather not move, the restaurant’s seating offers a full view of the waterfall, with its dramatic cascade bringing a refreshing sense of calm 💦.

A Balinese Garden Restaurant: Savoring Crispy Duck at Laka Leke 🍗

If you’re in Ubud looking for a serene spot to enjoy classic Balinese cuisine away from the crowds, Laka Leke Restaurant is your perfect choice. With a low-key entrance, it hides a spacious Balinese garden, offering a comfortable dining setting and their mouthwatering signature crispy duck.

🏡 Restaurant Features & Atmosphere

  • Garden design: The restaurant has indoor seating in a traditional stilt house and an open-air area in the back, where you can enjoy views of lush green rice terraces in a serene setting.
  • Tradition & entertainment: The restaurant occasionally offers Balinese traditional dance performances and cooking classes, but it’s best to check with them in advance as schedules are irregular.
  • Avoiding crowds: If you’re not a fan of the bustling crowds at Ubud’s famous Bebek Bengil, this is a much quieter and more relaxing spot for crispy duck.

🍴 Must-Try Dish: Signature Crispy Duck

  • Highlights: Half a duck pre-marinated in spices, deep-fried to a golden, crispy skin that crackles with every bite. The fat is perfectly balanced—not greasy at all. Even the bones are easy to crunch, making it impossible to stop at just one piece.
  • Duck Texture: While the duck meat itself is a bit on the dry side, pairing it with the restaurant’s three house-made sauces adds layers of flavor. Each sauce has a different level of spiciness, with a fresh and delightful taste that will have you licking your fingers for more.

🌟 Other Food Options

Though the restaurant is best known for its crispy duck, the other dishes are also impressive:

  1. Lemon Chicken: Tender chicken paired with a tangy lemon sauce and soft potato balls—flavorful and satisfying.
  2. Spaghetti Carbonara: Rich, creamy sauce with a strong milky flavor, perfectly cooked pasta—simple yet satisfying.
  3. Nasi Campur: A classic Indonesian dish with a mix of traditional sides. Word has it the version here is incredibly authentic and worth a try.

🍹 Drink Recommendations

  • Mango Smoothie: Rich fruit flavor with a silky texture—perfect for cooling down.
  • Coconut Juice: Fresh, natural coconut water—refreshing and thirst-quenching.
  • Ice Tea: Light and palate-cleansing, pairs well with any meal.

💰 Price Guide

  • Crispy Duck: 140,000 IDR (approx. USD$5)
  • Lemon Chicken: 60,000 IDR (approx. USD$2)
  • Spaghetti Carbonara: 60,000 IDR (approx. USD$2)
  • Mango Smoothie: 35,000 IDR (approx. USD$1)
  • Coconut Juice: 27,000 IDR (approx. USD$1)
  • Ice Tea: 18,000 IDR (approx. USD$1)

Laka Leke Restaurant perfectly blends traditional Balinese garden charm with classic cuisine. Whether it’s the spacious and comfortable dining setting, the distinctive traditional stilt-house design, or the signature crispy duck’s irresistible crunch, this place is well worth a visit.

If you want to avoid the crowds at Ubud’s popular restaurants without missing out on classic Balinese flavors, add this understated yet amazing spot to your itinerary right away!

Important Notes: Upon entry, you can pick up a multilingual paper guide (including Chinese). A full loop of the sanctuary takes about 30–60 minutes. Mornings are less crowded with more monkeys, making it ideal for an early visit.

🐒 Tips for Interacting with Monkeys

Although the monkeys in the forest are relatively gentle, please follow these rules:

  1. Do not stare directly into the monkeys’ eyes
  2. Do not bring plastic bags or plastic bottles (monkeys may snatch them)
  3. Do not touch or disturb the monkeys
  4. Do not feed the monkeys

Looking up, you can see monkeys leaping through the treetops; underfoot, a forest path blanketed with banyan roots; all around, sacred Hindu temples. Monkeys and temples coexist in harmony—this serene atmosphere is incredibly healing.

🏛️ A 17th-Century Ancient Temple

Within the grounds stands a Hindu temple built in the 17th century. Although you can’t enter, the moss-covered temple walls alone are already breathtaking.

📸 The Secret to Monkey Selfies

Staff on-site offer professional monkey-feeding photo services, which require an additional photo ticket costing 50,000 IDR (about USD$3). The staff will help capture fun moments like monkeys jumping onto your shoulders or feeding them—safe and efficient, well worth a try.

⚠️ Note: Do not feed the monkeys on your own to avoid dangerous behavior!

🌾 《TIS Cafe》Telaga Waja Rice Terrace — A Great-Value Scenic Café Recommendation ✨

The Telaga Waja Rice Terrace is one of the must-see spots around Ubud. The stunning layered rice paddies and thrilling swing experiences are top choices for many travelers, but the high level of commercialization can make the trip feel a bit like an ‘ATM on the go.’ 💸

Rice Terrace Fee Situation:

  1. Some cafés require an entrance fee;
  2. Stepping onto the rice terrace land may require paying a landowner fee;
  3. Each section of the terrace belongs to a different landowner, with separate fees.

To avoid these ‘cost traps,’ we recommend choosing the scenic and reasonably priced TIS Cafe. Not only is there no entrance fee, but you can also enjoy equally stunning terrace views—perfect for those who dislike long queues and aren’t chasing Instagram-famous spots! 😊

Highlights of TIS Cafe:

  • No entrance fee, and the scenery rivals famous attractions.
  • 💰 Swing prices are friendly, just 50,000 IDR (about USD$2).
  • 🌊 Kids can use the pool, with a minimum spend of only 100,000 IDR per person (about USD$3).
  • 🍽 Delicious food at affordable prices, with warm and friendly staff.
  • 👣 Free-will donation for rice terraces—pay 10,000 IDR once to enter multiple terraces for photos (the landowners are also very kind).
  • 📸 Free Instagram-worthy photo setups, like hanging hammocks—absolutely great value!

⚠️ Tips:

  • Avoid peak hours for a quieter experience.
  • When visiting, respect local customs; donations are stress-free, but bring some small Indonesian rupiah as a gesture of goodwill.

During our stay, we chose the “Antique 907” room type, featuring a bale overlooking the rice terraces—so stunning it took our breath away. If you want the pool to directly face the terrace views, opt for the neighboring “Antique 906.” 🌾

📍 Accommodation Area Reminder

《Madani Antique Private Pool Villas》is divided into two accommodation zones:

2️⃣ Zone 2: A pure accommodation area with only three villas and rice terraces, no on-site reception staff.

Pura Tirta Empul – A Sacred Experience of Spiritual Cleansing

Sacred Springs in Serenity: A Holy Ritual of Purification

On Day 5, we visited Pura Tirta Empul, a temple renowned for its holy spring water and a vital symbol of Bali’s religion and culture. Walking through the lush coconut grove path, we were greeted by ancient stone structures and crystal-clear spring water, as if stepping into a river of time. The sacred springs here are considered a sanctuary for spiritual purification by locals, drawing countless devotees for centuries to pray and undergo spiritual cleansing.

About Pura Tirta Empul: Sacred Springs and Ancient Beliefs

The temple is named after the holy springs that surround it, featuring over a dozen different spouts, each symbolizing a distinct prayer intention, such as ‘cleansing the soul,’ ‘warding off misfortune,’ ‘healing ailments,’ and ‘banishing nightmares.’ After completing the purification ritual in the springs, local devotees enter the temple to pray, demonstrating their devotion to the divine.

Visitor Information & Fees

Visitors need to purchase tickets to enter Tirta Empul Temple, and the fees are quite affordable:

  • Adult ticket: 50,000 IDR (approximately USD$2)
  • Child ticket: 25,000 IDR (approximately USD$1)

The ticket includes borrowing a traditional colored sarong, which is required for entering the temple. However, note that the colored sarong cannot be used for entering the water. If you want to experience the holy water purification ritual, you’ll need to pay additional fees:

  • Green sarong rental fee: 10,000 IDR (approximately USD$0.3)
  • Locker rental fee: 15,000 IDR (approximately USD$0.5)

These small fees are not only affordable but also allow you to deeply experience this unique traditional culture.

How to Participate in the Holy Water Purification Ritual?

The holy water purification ritual may seem simple, but it follows a specific order and rules:

  1. Prepare the green sarong and locker, change clothes, and head to the holy water pool.
  2. Facing the pool, start from the left pool, purifying at the first spout in sequence.
  3. Skip the second-to-last and third-to-last spouts (these are reserved for offerings to the deceased).
  4. After finishing the left side, move to the right pool.
  5. At the right pool, you only need to pray at the first spout.

At each spout, follow these steps for prayer:

  • Press your palms together and make a wish facing the spout.
  • Wet your hair with the holy water and sprinkle the water over your entire body.

The cool spring water instantly washes away the fatigue of the journey, leaving you feeling light in body and soul. It’s a brand-new cultural experience, absolutely worth trying!

Touristy yet still retaining a pure, local warmth

Although Tirta Empul has become a popular tourist attraction, with Western visitors in green sarongs performing purification rituals in the pools—a rather amusing scene—the temple still preserves its genuine local warmth. The staff are friendly and welcoming, with no exorbitant extra charges, leaving you feeling nothing but goodwill and smiles.

⚠️ Friendly reminder: Respect the local culture

When experiencing the purification ritual, be sure to maintain a solemn and respectful attitude, as many local devotees are still engaged in sincere prayers and bathing. Avoid excessive photography that might disturb others.

Recommended nearby attraction: Pura Gunung Kawi

If time permits, consider visiting Pura Gunung Kawi, not far from Tirta Empul. This site features impressive rock carvings and stunning valley views, making it a cultural gem worth exploring near Ubud.

Additionally, Tirta Empul is very close to my favorite accommodation on this trip, Sebatu Sanctuary Eco-Resort. Staying here makes it easy to arrange your itinerary—highly recommended!

Experience a spiritual cleansing in Bali

Tirta Empul is more than just a photo-worthy spot in Bali; it’s a spiritual place where you can dive deep into local culture. Participating in the holy spring purification ritual, bathing in the crystal-clear waters, not only relaxes your body and mind but also adds a layer of sacredness and meaning to your Bali journey.

Experience this soul-cleansing journey for yourself, and let your travels be more than just a whirlwind tour!

The World’s Most Expensive Coffee Journey: Sip Your First Cup of Kopi Luwak

During our trip to Ubud, we embarked on an exploration of Kopi Luwak, the world’s most expensive coffee. Renowned for its unique production process and flavor, it’s a must-try experience when visiting Bali. We chose to visit Satria Agrowisata farm in Bali to witness firsthand the creation of this legendary coffee.

The Story Behind Kopi Luwak

Kopi Luwak, known as Civet Coffee in English, gets its name from the process where civet cats eat coffee cherries, and the beans undergo enzymatic digestion before being excreted. This quirky method has earned it the nickname ‘cat poop coffee.’

As one of the main producers of Kopi Luwak, Bali is home to numerous tourist farms where visitors can observe and taste the coffee. Most farms don’t charge an entry fee and offer free samples of coffee and tea, a setup often called a Coffee/Tea Plantation Tour. But this free experience often comes with a catch—staff enthusiastically promote their products, which can feel a bit pushy.

Exploring Satria Agrowisata: A Blend of Knowledge and Fun

Upon arriving at Satria Agrowisata, we were greeted by a lush botanical garden filled with fruit trees, coffee plants, and spices like mangosteen, Arabica coffee, and ginger. This garden gave us a fascinating glimpse into the raw ingredients behind coffee.

Next, the farm staff guided us through the process of making Kopi Luwak, explaining how the coffee beans are selected and cleaned from civet droppings. Surprisingly, even with just a couple of visitors, the staff patiently explained everything with great enthusiasm and friendliness.

A Surprise Tasting of 13 Free Beverages

After a brief introduction to coffee-making, the staff brought out 13 different drinks for us to sample for free, including various coffees, teas, and specialty beverages—each with its own unique flavor and benefits. Sitting under the dense canopy of trees, sipping these drinks was not only a treat for the palate but also a feast for the eyes, making it a truly relaxing experience.

One of the Highlights: Bali CatPoo Chino

On a hillside, a striking sign read the amusing name ‘Bali CatPoo Chino’—a playful twist on ‘cappuccino’ (cat=cat, poo=excrement), and a key attraction for civet coffee. Intrigued, we ordered a cup of civet coffee, priced at 50,000 Indonesian Rupiah (about USD$3), to taste the legendary brew firsthand. For coffee novices like us, it didn’t taste much different from regular black coffee, but it was certainly a unique experience.

Shopping Area & Tips

Toward the end of the tour, you’ll enter the merchandise area, where shelves are packed with products like coffee powder, spiced teas, and dried fruit. Although online reviews had warned that the flavors of take-home items might not be as rich as those sampled on-site, the staff’s enthusiastic sales pitch still won us over. I ended up buying a pack of avocado coffee powder for 130,000 Indonesian Rupiah (about USD$4), which I considered a small ‘admission fee’ for the free tour.

Special Recommendation: Other Options

If you find the pushy shopping atmosphere uncomfortable, consider visiting Bali Pulina instead. According to online sources, the entrance fee there is 100,000 Indonesian Rupiah (about USD$3), which includes coffee and tea tastings along with snacks, offering a more relaxed and pleasant vibe. The scenery there is also said to be stunning, providing a different kind of experience.

A Unique Memory of a Cup of Civet Coffee

Taking a moment during the journey to savor a cup of civet coffee—though for coffee novices like us, the nuances might be hard to discern—was still a worthwhile experience. Witnessing the production process and learning the story behind the beans added depth to the visit. This ‘world’s most expensive coffee’ offered not just a taste sensation but also a glimpse into Bali’s unique culture.

Curious about the taste of this coffee? When you’re in Ubud, why not experience it for yourself!

Day 5 Accommodation: A Hot Spring B&B with Only 4 Rooms by the Volcano🏡 《The Lava Bali and Hot Spring》✨

🚘 Heading north, we arrived at the Kintamani area at the northernmost tip of Bali, where the volcanic scenery is breathtaking and unforgettable 😌.

🌋 Mount Batur is Bali’s second-largest active volcano. Though not as towering as the largest, Mount Agung, its landscape of mountains and waters far surpasses Agung’s stark grandeur 💗. Even more enticing are the natural, odorless hot springs♨️, embraced by the stunning views of Kintamani, offering total relaxation.

✖️ We skipped the two popular hot spring resorts and chose a cozy B&B with only 4 rooms, 《The Lava Bali and Hot Spring》. Its simple and laid-back vibe exudes a charm that makes you want to linger quietly 💕.

⬆️ Sitting at the doorstep of our room, zoning out and clearing our minds, the sense of ease instantly soared 😊. Climbing the steps to the hot spring pool at the B&B’s highest point👣, we soaked in the warm water with a full view of the majestic Mount Batur—breathtakingly beautiful ✨.

❄️ In the early morning or evening, the cool air made the hot spring’s warmth even more comforting🔥, and with the peaceful, tourist-free atmosphere, it felt like a uniquely personal Bali experience 👏.

🏡 B&B Experience Review

Staying at 《The Lava Bali and Hot Spring》 wasn’t luxurious, but every detail showed the host’s care ❤️:

  • Rooms were simple yet stylish, with thoughtful touches that made a difference.
  • The bathroom was spacious with plenty of hot water.
  • The host spoke fluent English and quickly addressed any guest concerns 👍.

💰 B&B Pricing and Services

🔹 600,000 IDR/room/night (approx. USD$39)

🔹 150,000 IDR/extra bed/night (approx. USD$10) ©️ Room rate does not include breakfast✖️🍽

Although the guesthouse doesn’t serve meals, there’s no need to worry about finding food:

  • There’s a convenience store right at the guesthouse entrance, making it super easy to grab snacks and drinks anytime💯.
  • Several local eateries are nearby with very affordable prices 🫶.
  • This time, we also tried the nearby ‘JFC Indonesian KFC’ and a local specialty called ‘Terang Bulan’ (a type of pancake) (recommended flavors: peanut, chocolate, sesame, and cheese).

Staying away from crowded tourist areas like this lets you relax and experience a different side of Bali life—simple yet wonderful😊.

🏡 First Impressions of the Treehouse: A Perfect Blend of Nature and Luxury

Sebatu Sanctuary Eco-resort is a renowned eco-hotel in Bali, with a design rooted in sustainability, where every detail blends seamlessly with nature. Western travelers have long listed it as a must-stay in Bali, but it remains relatively unknown to Asian visitors.

Upon arrival, you’ll immediately feel the professionalism and thoughtfulness:

  • Welcome Service: The staff remembers your name from the start, offering juice, coffee, or beer to help you unwind instantly.
  • Personal Butler: They set up a WhatsApp chat group for you, handling any requests—like booking breakfast, activities, or room service—through your phone with impressive efficiency.
  • Attention to Detail: Every corner of the room features carefully placed greenery or flowers, whether by the bedside, along the stairs, or in the bathroom, making you feel warmly welcomed.

🌟 Must-Book Room Type: Two-story Bamboo Pod

The room we chose is a two-story bamboo pod treehouse, exuding luxury at every turn:

  1. Lower Level:
    • Open-plan design with direct jungle views, featuring a spacious daybed for lounging.
  • The bathroom is completely open-air with stable hot water and good privacy—anyone who loves outdoor bathing will adore it!
  1. Upper Level:
    • 360-degree panoramic windows framing the treetops, making you feel like you’re in a dream.
  • There’s also a hanging hammock—definitely recommend snapping a photo for the ‘gram!

💎 Little Surprise: All drinks in the fridge (beer, soda), premium chips, and more are complimentary, plus a full selection of coffee and tea bags!

🍽 Dining Experience: A Taste of Paradise

  1. Breakfast:
    • Choose to dine at the restaurant, have it delivered to your room, or enjoy a floating breakfast in the pool—all at no extra cost, just reserve in advance.
  2. Dinner:
    • The hotel’s restaurant offers a rich menu with fresh ingredients and reasonable prices, making it a great choice for savoring Bali’s flavors.

🌿 Activity Recommendations: Intimate Moments with Nature

Beyond the stay itself, Sebatu Sanctuary designs many nature-immersive activities:

  1. Forest Picnic (Romantic Picnic for 2):
    • Follow the butler on a 1.5 km walk deep into the forest to enjoy a chef-prepared picnic basket beside a natural waterfall pool. This two-hour escape is completely secluded—perfect for unwinding!
  2. SPA Experience:
    • Prices are very affordable, with massage beds set up right in the room or outdoors. Surrounded by natural breezes and the sounds of birds and insects, you’ll feel completely relaxed before the massage even begins.

💰 Room Rate Reference:

  • Two-story Bamboo Pod: 2,400,000 IDR/night
  • Extra bed (includes 2 breakfasts): 250,000 IDR

PS: It’s best to book 1–2 months in advance, as this place is very popular among Western travelers. With only 8 rooms total, they often sell out quickly!

📌 Transportation & Booking Tips

  1. Book via the hotel’s official website: Sebatu Sanctuary Eco-resort
  2. Recommended room types:
    • Two-story Bamboo Pod (2 units)

If you’re traveling in Bali, we strongly recommend using Gede’s private driver service! Gede is a highly professional and patient driver who provides thoughtful service whether you’re on a family trip or general sightseeing.

我們大力推薦的包車服務

📋 Service Highlights:

  • Arrives on time (or even early) as agreed
  • Notifies you in advance if there’s any delay due to traffic
  • Prioritizes safety, even shielding you from traffic when getting in and out of the car
  • Always the first to rush and confirm your hotel check-in
  • Goes out of his way to help with any concerns (lost items, purchases, sharing information)
  • If you need to book tours, he’ll ask his friends to help get you the best price
  • Handles the first three steps after landing: airport pickup, helping you buy a local SIM card (you can use the airport’s free Wi-Fi to contact him first), and currency exchange at a legitimate exchange center
  • Advises against overpriced tourist traps (Gede doesn’t take kickbacks, so some popular spots won’t allow him to accompany guests inside)
  • Accompanies you into some attractions (locals get free entry at certain places) and acts as a guide, explaining the history and stories
  • At Uluwatu Temple, the cliffs, and sunset spots, Gede stayed close, taking photos and keeping an eye out for monkeys trying to snatch our belongings
  • Remember: Be a considerate traveler. Gede is a private driver, not a personal guide. It’s perfectly reasonable if he doesn’t accompany you into attractions—don’t make excessive demands, and be understanding
  • Throughout our trip, we never insisted Gede join us for sightseeing or commentary; we let things flow naturally. Extra company was appreciated, but its absence was perfectly normal
  • As for meals, afternoon tea, or scenic cafes—places tourists like us visit—prices aren’t low. Gede typically drops you off and waits for your call
  • For Gede, who earns a modest income, these places are expensive. We got along with him like friends and often invited him to join us (he’d always decline meals, claiming he was full, but occasionally shared a drink, always choosing the cheapest option)
