This Bali trip was originally planned to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday, and also to take a brief escape from my busy expat work in Vietnam, giving myself a breather. Lately, both of us have been overwhelmed by work stress. When we spotted a promotion from VietJet Air, we decisively booked round-trip tickets from Ho Chi Minh City to Bali, seizing this chance to unwind a little. This time, we chose tickets with 20 kg of checked luggage and also added emergency exit row seats. All in, it came to less than USD$200 per person for the airfare—incredible value for money!
(Friendly reminder: At the time of posting, VietJet Air still had plenty of zero-fare ticket deals, so interested folks should keep an eye out!)
On departure day, we arrived at the airport smoothly and completed check-in. VietJet Air’s emergency exit row seats are truly worth recommending—the legroom is so spacious you can fully stretch your legs, and the seat reclines, making the entire flight experience noticeably more comfortable! However, there was a small hiccup along the way: the passenger behind me was a tall Western man whose knees kept pressing against my seatback due to his cramped space, which was a bit uncomfortable. But aside from that little issue, the overall flight was enjoyable.

September 4: Welcome flower garlands and a first taste of spa treatments
As soon as we stepped out of Bali’s airport, our private driver Dwik warmly greeted us with welcome flower garlands and thoughtfully handed us cold water, instantly refreshing us! One reason we chose Dwik was that he drives a 2024 Toyota new SUV—spacious and quiet inside, making it especially relaxing for a quick nap on the go. Dwik speaks fluent American English; when we asked, we learned he used to work on cruise ships between the US and Mexico, so it’s no wonder his service mindset is so strong.
Afterward, we headed to a nearby money exchange point to convert some local currency—the rate there was much better than at the airport. Then, on Dwik’s recommendation, we visited Calma Spa for a two-hour spa treatment, and through Dwik, we even got a better price than the menu rate. This spa experience was truly relaxing, leaving us completely soothed.

After the spa, we headed to Bali’s famous Rock Bar to enjoy the sunset. Sitting on the cliffside seats, we watched the sun slowly sink, completely captivated by the breathtaking view.

For dinner, we chose Wahaha Pork Ribs. The grilled pork ribs and corn were both satisfying, and the restaurant featured a traditional Balinese Barong dance performance, adding a lovely touch to the atmosphere. In the evening, we checked into Marriott’s Fairfield Legian, which boasts a great location, friendly and warm staff, and a clean, beautiful pool—a perfect end to a relaxing and enjoyable first day.

September 5: A Spectacular Nusa Penida Day Trip and Snorkeling Experience
Today’s highlight was a day trip to Nusa Penida. We set off early, and our private driver even arranged for his girlfriend, Indah, to join us as an assistant guide. She accompanied us throughout, helping pick good seats on the boat, taking photos, and looking after our belongings. Once on Nusa Penida, we visited the island’s stunning spots, such as Broken Beach and Kelingking Beach, where the crystal-clear turquoise waters sparkled like sapphires, leaving us in awe.
The snorkeling that followed was an unforgettable experience. We visited three snorkeling spots and marveled at the diverse marine life. Although we didn’t spot manta rays at Manta Bay and got a slight sting from a small jellyfish, this unique experience became another cherished memory of the trip. Even more surprising, we encountered a pod of dolphins leaping from the water near our boat—saving us the planned trip to North Bali to see them. It was an unexpected gift.
This Nusa Penida trip, from the island’s stunning landscapes to the underwater wonders, truly made us feel the natural beauty of Bali.

September 6: Volcanic Sunrise & Pork Delicacy Adventure

Our adventure kicked off with a 2 AM trip to catch the Mount Batur sunrise. Wrapped in thick blankets provided by the tour, we bounced along in a jeep under a star-studded sky. As the sun slowly rose, the volcano’s majestic landscape unfolded before us. Indah and the driver helped us snap romantic shots against the starry backdrop—a moment that became one of the trip’s fondest memories.

Afterward, we soaked in natural hot springs right by the volcano. The flies were absolutely overwhelming (seriously, too many—I wouldn’t recommend this spot), but the relaxation from the warm bath made it worth a try. For lunch, we enjoyed scenic views at a local tourist restaurant, savoring the meal while taking in the volcano’s grandeur. Before wrapping up the day, our driver treated us to a local snack—Siobak. This incredible pork dish was a revelation, giving us plenty of energy for the rest of the trip!

Siobak is an authentic dish from Singaraja, made from pork. Its name traces back to Chinese culture (siu yuk or roasted pork), blending local and Chinese flavors seamlessly. Since Hinduism is widely practiced here, beef is considered sacred, making pork a popular alternative.
The meat is seasoned with spices, boiled at low heat to remove any gamey taste, then mixed with cloves, shallots, garlic, and other aromatics, resulting in a unique flavor profile.

September 7: Waterfalls & Night Safari
Today’s itinerary is a bit more relaxed. We set off later, heading first to Tegenungan Waterfall. This stunning natural wonder is breathtaking, with lush greenery and rushing waters creating a picturesque scene. For lunch, we enjoyed crispy pork rice recommended by our driver. Though most diners were foreign tourists, the meal still had plenty of local character.

In the afternoon, we went to Jaen Spa for a relaxing massage, where our tired bodies and minds were soothed by professional therapists. Later, we joined the Bali Safari Marine Park night safari, riding in a caged vehicle to watch nocturnal animals being fed up close. It was both thrilling and fun, offering a whole new experience.
Is the Bali Night Safari worth recommending?
I personally think the night safari is a great experience! 👍 It’s not just about being in a cage watching animals; there’s also a unique fire dance performance that makes the whole event more entertaining. Plus, it includes a buffet dinner. While the dishes aren’t top-tier, they taste decent, and overall it’s very satisfying! 🌃
You can freely come and go from the restaurant without worrying about missing the show: step out to watch the performance, then return to eat until the restaurant closes. It’s super convenient. If you’re interested, the night safari here is definitely worth a visit!

September 8: Purification Ritual at Tirta Empul Temple and Rice Terrace Scenery
Today we visited Tirta Empul, the Holy Water Temple, and took part in a local purification ritual. The ceremony gave us a deep sense of Bali’s unique culture and spiritual atmosphere. As the water flowed over us, our minds found peace and release—a feeling that left us renewed with fresh energy.

After the ritual, we headed to the Luwak Coffee Plantation to sample the famous civet coffee. Though it was purely a tourist stop, it was an interesting experience that deepened our understanding of civet coffee.
For lunch, we asked our driver for a restaurant recommendation and enjoyed Bali’s famous crispy dirty duck dish. It was absolutely delicious and well worth a try! After the meal, we took a short break to recharge for the rest of the day.
In the evening, we made our way to the Ubud Palace to watch a traditional performance. As fans of live shows, we found it truly worthwhile—it gave us a deeper appreciation of Bali’s cultural charm. The entire day was both fulfilling and joyful, adding wonderful memories to our trip.

September 9: A Surprise Birthday Celebration for My Girlfriend
Early in the morning, the staff at Ubud Element prepared a birthday cake and softly sang the birthday song, surprising us with an incredibly warm moment in the Bali dawn. My girlfriend smiled at the staff and guests, feeling the genuine warmth and sincerity of the moment. This small birthday blessing became an unforgettable memory that added so much meaning to our journey.
After breakfast, we took a short rest and then went to see the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. The terraces were beautifully arranged like a painting. Despite the crowds and the rule against bringing water inside, the whole setting was still a perfect spot for taking stunning photos.
Next, we headed to Bali’s famous sea temple, Tanah Lot. Perched on a rocky islet offshore, this sacred temple can only be approached during low tide. We joined the crowd and drew closer, with a gentle sea breeze brushing past us and waves softly lapping against the rocks, sending up splashes of water. The majestic and holy sight left us breathless. Despite the many visitors, the temple’s mystical aura still filled us with awe. We stepped up to the shrine, lightly touched some holy water, and prayed for peace and blessings.
In the evening, we arranged a special birthday dinner for her at Cuca Restaurant. Located in Jimbaran, the restaurant was lit by flickering candlelight with a lovely night view. We enjoyed creative tapas-style dishes. The staff thoughtfully prepared a small birthday gift, making the atmosphere both romantic and warm. We specifically ordered a set meal called “Nicholas Tse’s Favorite” from the menu, thinking it would be cool—but well, let’s just keep it a mystery (laughs). It was one of those experiences you know! This romantic dinner was the perfect end to my girlfriend’s birthday.
We stayed overnight at VIVARA private pool Villas & Spa Retreats. Upon arrival, the hotel greeted us with welcome juice shots and cold towels, which felt wonderfully refreshing. A golf cart took us to our door, and inside we found a spacious private pool, an outdoor kitchen, and a dining area (with complimentary drinks in the fridge!). The room was roomy and comfortable, featuring an open-air bathroom with a bathtub and rain shower. The only minor downsides were that the hot water wasn’t hot enough, and the bathtub drain plug was a bit loose, causing water to leak. Still, we were very satisfied overall.

September 10: GWK Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park & Kecak Fire Dance Tour

As our trip neared its end, the surprises kept coming. We headed to the GWK (Garuda Wisnu Kencana) Cultural Park in the morning. Famous not only for its giant Garuda statue, the park also offers a rich array of traditional Balinese dance performances. Almost every time slot features a different dance show, showcasing the beauty of Balinese culture. We watched two or three performances in a row, and before each one, we used ChatGPT to translate and read the descriptions, which helped us better understand the mythological stories behind the dances, adding a lot to the enjoyment.

For lunch, we chose Waroeng De Dusun, recommended by our driver. This restaurant serves delicious and affordable Indonesian-style Chinese cuisine—no regrets here, with light and satisfying flavors.
In the afternoon, we drove to Uluwatu Temple. Watch out for the monkeys along the way! These monkeys are famously clever and sneaky, known for snatching (or swiftly grabbing) sunglasses, hats, and even hand sanitizer from tourists. I saw one monkey unlock a visitor’s bag and munch on its contents, only for staff to trade food to get it back. So, it’s best to leave valuables in the car to avoid trouble.

As dusk fell, we found seats to watch the legendary Kecak Fire Dance. This performance blends Balinese mythology with traditional dance on a semicircular tiered stage, with the audience surrounded by fire for a visually stunning effect. There are no musical instruments—just dozens of dancers chanting a deep, rhythmic ‘kecak-kecak’ beat, creating a captivating backdrop that immerses you completely. Near the end, a spectator proposed to their partner amidst the flames, blending this surprise with the classic show into a delightful highlight of the trip.

September 11: A Bittersweet Farewell
On our last morning, we strolled along our beloved beach, gazing deeply at Bali’s azure coastline. This blue sea and sky, no matter how many times seen, still enchant us. We set down our bags, sat on beach chairs, sipped cool coconut water, and stared at the horizon, quietly reminiscing about the past few days. Every attraction, every meal, every laugh reminded us of the preciousness of this trip.
At the airport, we said goodbye to our driver Dwik, who still wore a sunny smile and said sincerely, ‘Hope to see you again—I’ll be here waiting to pick you up.’ This genuine warmth touched us deeply. The help from Dwik and Indah, along with that profound human touch, made this journey unforgettable.
As the plane took off, we waved goodbye to Bali. This trip wasn’t just about birthday joy; it was deepened by small hiccups along the way. Though we faced the trouble of lost luggage, what stood out more were the warm hearts and unexpected surprises, teaching us to cherish the present amidst laughter and emotion.
The beauty of Bali lies not only in its magnificent natural scenery but also in the local people who helped us and touched our hearts, as well as the moments we shared together. I look forward to returning to this land, embarking on new adventures beneath its endless azure skies.

【Important PS】Arriving in Bali: From Smooth Customs to Luggage Woes
I have to mention that after landing in Bali, everything seemed to go smoothly at first. We had already applied for our visas online and paid the tourist tax, so the customs process was surprisingly quick and efficient. Apart from a slight delay of 3 to 5 minutes at the new health declaration checkpoint, the whole procedure was straightforward and reassuring. However, the first hiccup of our trip quietly unfolded at the baggage carousel.
At that moment, like other travelers, we anxiously waited for our luggage. Nearly an hour later, we finally saw our suitcases slowly emerge from the conveyor belt. When I spotted mine, I quickly grabbed it; everything looked fine on the surface, so I headed straight out of the airport. But upon arriving at the hotel and opening the suitcase, I discovered the zipper had been pried open and the TSA lock was broken. Some small change and a gold trinket (not real gold, thankfully) were missing. Fortunately, my important documents and credit cards were still there, which was a relief, but I definitely learned a lesson: always keep valuables on you!
Seeking Help and Kindness: Driver Dwik’s Warm Support
After discovering the tampered luggage, I immediately contacted the Taiwanese representative office in Surabaya, the airport ground handling company, and Vietjet Air’s customer service. All three kept passing the buck, leaving us exhausted. The representative office suggested we talk to the ground crew, who then shifted the blame to the airline’s customer service, and after going in circles, we got no real help.
That’s when our private driver, Dwik, showed incredible warmth and kindness. Upon hearing about the situation, he felt deeply sorry, even blaming himself for not taking better care of our luggage. Dwik proactively noted the time of the incident and prepared to file a police report. Although we ultimately decided not to report it due to the time involved, his sincerity and sense of responsibility were truly heartwarming. He even stayed up all night, not only discussing the matter with fellow drivers but also contacting the travel company to see if similar incidents had occurred, making us feel supported and cared for in an unfamiliar place.
(To this day, I am still deeply grateful for Dwik’s tremendous help and kindness.)
