[Bali Travel Tips] These Bali Souvenirs Can't Be Brought Back to Taiwan! A Complete Guide to Taiwan Customs Regulations
💡 Quick Answer

Every time I return from Bali, my suitcase is packed with all kinds of souvenirs—potato chips, chili sauce, dried squid, and a ton of local snacks.

Bottom line: Cookies, potato chips, coconut chips, bottled chili sauce, nuts, candies, toothpaste, and skincare products are allowed into Taiwan—as long as they are unopened, factory-sealed, with clear ingredient labels, and in reasonable personal-use quantities. The real no-go items are products containing pork (ham, jerky, instant noodles with meat seasoning packets, etc.). Taiwan Customs strictly enforces this ban, so don’t bring these items.

Thanks to group member Yang Mei for sharing the photo of her bed covered in haul 🎁

Every time I return from Bali, my suitcase is packed with all kinds of souvenirs—potato chips, chili sauce, dried squid, and a ton of local snacks. It’s hard to resist any of them!

But can these treasures actually make it through customs in Taiwan? Recently, group member Yang Mei asked this very practical question, along with sharing a stunning photo of her Bali shopping haul.

Let’s figure out Taiwan Customs regulations together, so you can avoid any pitfalls—shop happily before your trip and breeze through customs on your way home!

Items You Can Bring Back to Taiwan ✅

Looking at Yang Mei’s photo, most of the items fall into these categories, which are within the scope allowed by Taiwan Customs:

  • Cookies, potato chips, pineapple cakes (e.g., Kusuka, GuriBee)
  • Coconut chips
  • Instant noodle snacks (Enak, Mie Sedaap—check ingredients carefully)
  • Dried seafood products (e.g., JUHU dried squid)
  • Bottled sauces (e.g., chili sauce)
  • Toothpaste, skincare products, hair oils (e.g., Sensodyne toothpaste, Aloe Vera gel)
  • Nuts, candies, chocolates

As long as the items are factory-sealed, unopened, with clear ingredient labels, and the quantity is for personal use, they can generally be brought into Taiwan without issues.

Special Note: Products Containing Pork 🚫

Here’s the key point! Taiwan has very strict regulations on food products containing pork, including but not limited to:

  • 🚫 Pork jerky, pork floss, pork cookies, fried pork skin
  • 🚫 Foods labeled with ingredients like Pork, Lard, or Pork Extract
  • 🚫 Instant noodles or crackers containing pork broth or minced pork

If caught, the minimum fine is NT$200,000 (approximately USD$6,452)! (A second violation can result in a fine of up to NT$1,000,000)

(The last three items Xiao Jie mentioned, which are pork-related, cannot be brought in!)

So, for snacks and instant noodles like Enak or Mie Sedaap, be sure to check the ingredient labels carefully. 👉 If you see any mention of ‘Pork’ or ‘Babi’ (Indonesian for pig), it’s best to finish them in Bali and not bring them back to Taiwan.

A little tip: After returning to your hotel, take out the noodle packaging and check the ingredients thoroughly. If you have any doubts, don’t risk bringing it.

So, Can You Bring Dried Squid? 🐙

Yang Mei also specifically asked: ‘JUHU is a processed dried squid sheet — can I bring it back?’

✅ The answer is: Yes!

The reason:

  • Processed dried squid sheets are seafood dried goods, not meat products.
  • They come in intact packaging with clear ingredient labels.
  • They are commercially processed products, not fresh items.

As long as the quantity is reasonable, you can go through the general customs channel when entering Taiwan without needing to declare them.

A quick note: If you bring a large quantity (over 20 boxes), it may look like it’s for commercial use, and customs might ask for inspection, so it’s best to keep the amount in check.

Tips for Bringing Bali Souvenirs Back to Taiwan ✈️

Here are a few handy tips to make your return to Taiwan smoother:

  1. Group dried goods together for easier customs inspection.
  2. Never risk bringing any products containing meat back to Taiwan.
  3. When in doubt, it’s safest to declare proactively.

Personal Tips 🌴

Every time I go on a shopping spree for souvenirs in Bali, it’s so easy to get carried away and lose track of time—but clearing customs is what really matters.

Especially now that Taiwan has very strict inspections on pork products, it’s better to bring less than to risk getting fined. Seeing all the amazing haul Yang Mei brought back this time is seriously enviable—especially that whole row of dried squid slices, which must taste absolutely heavenly as a late-night snack! 😍

Summary

  • ✅ Potato chips, coconut chips, and dried squid are OK!
  • 🚫 Definitely don’t bring any (pork-containing) products!
  • Keep quantities moderate and stick to personal use for the safest approach.

As long as you keep these key points in mind, you can shop happily at the end of your Bali trip and breeze through customs on your way home!
