Bottom Line: A 7-day, 6-night family trip to Bali during the rainy season (January) is totally doable. The key is to book a private villa in Ubud as a rainy-day base, arrange a private driver to plan routes that avoid traffic jams, and pack mosquito repellent and stomach medicine (to prevent Bali belly). You can still enjoy outdoor activities like visiting Tirta Empul Temple and riding ATVs.

From January 11 to 17, 2026, our family of all ages embarked on a joyful Bali family trip. Before departure, many friends warned us about the rainy season and traffic congestion. Now that the trip is over, it’s time to share my real experiences and reflections.
First, about the traffic jams everyone worries about: It was much better than expected! Since we were a large group, we rented a 14-seater minibus. Throughout the trip, we only encountered slow-moving traffic for about two hours when entering a busy tourist area; the rest of the time, we moved smoothly. This taught me that in Bali, choosing a private car and planning the route wisely can effectively avoid most traffic nightmares.

A sudden downpour hit—we quickly drove away from the beach!! Some low-lying areas turned into rivers.
Now, let’s talk about the challenges and surprises of the rainy season. Yes, we experienced intermittent rain on five out of seven days. But the rainy season isn’t all bad—it actually brought some perks: cooler, more comfortable temperatures, lush and fresh greenery, and fewer tourists, so we avoided the crowds. Of course, sudden heavy rain required quick adjustments (like the flood scene in the photo where we ‘fled’ from the beach—now it’s just a funny memory 🤣🤣). Interestingly, the weather forecast seemed unreliable. For instance, in Kuta, we received a heavy rain warning, but the two days we were there were mostly sunny, with only occasional evening showers. This taught us that in Bali, it’s better to stay flexible than to worry about the weather. Our strategy was to always have a rainy-day backup plan, like heading to indoor attractions, museums, galleries, or markets, keeping the itinerary adaptable, with the rain becoming a soothing background noise.

Of course, there were a few things to get used to on this trip: the traffic in the city center isn’t very pedestrian-friendly, and crossing the road felt like playing a real-life version of ‘Frogger’; the countless zeros on the Indonesian rupiah bills nearly caused my brain’s CPU to overheat and smoke trying to do the conversions ♨️
First, here’s our itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Ubud, a Leisurely Prelude at the Villa
After a long flight, we landed smoothly in Bali. The customs process was quicker than expected, and after collecting our luggage, we met our pre-booked private driver. As the car left the airport’s hustle and bustle, the scenery gradually shifted from modern buildings to lush rice fields and intricate shrines, reminding us that we had truly stepped onto the ‘Island of the Gods.’

When we arrived at our booked Villa in Ubud, the fatigue of the journey was instantly washed away by the view. The villa was nestled in greenery, featuring a private pool and an open-sided bale (gazebo). The kids cheered as soon as they saw the pool, while the adults quickly unloaded the luggage, eager to brew some tea and sit in the gazebo, soaking in Ubud’s unique tranquil air. That night, lulled by a natural symphony of insects and frogs, we ended our relaxed first day, recharging for the adventures ahead.

Day 2: Holy Spring Purification, Volcano Views, and a Taste Exploration
This day’s itinerary was rich with contrasts between culture and nature, making it quite fulfilling.
- Tirta Empul (Holy Water Temple): In the early morning, we visited the famous Tirta Empul. Although there were many tourists, the temple’s solemn and sacred atmosphere was still strong. Watching local devotees and international visitors line up in the purification pools to bathe and pray, their expressions focused and devout, brought a sense of peace to my heart. The kids were curious about this ‘lining up in the water’ ritual, and we explained its religious significance to them—it was a great cultural experience.

- Kintamani Volcano: Next, the car wound its way up the mountain to Kintamani. When the panoramic view of Mount Batur and the volcanic lake at its base suddenly unfolded before us, the car erupted in awe. We had lunch at a scenic restaurant, savoring local flavors while taking in this magnificent natural tableau. Drifting clouds transformed the volcanic landscape moment by moment, adding a poetic touch.

- Penglipuran Village: After lunch, we visited Penglipuran Village. Quieter than the popular tourist spots, it offered a glimpse into the rhythm of traditional Balinese village life. Strolling through, we saw villagers focused on handicrafts or chatting leisurely, as if time itself had slowed down.

- Luwak Coffee Plantation: This was a fun experiential stop on the itinerary. The guide explained the unique process from coffee trees to ‘civet coffee’ in detail. We sampled several free tastings of coffee and tea, including the famous luwak coffee. Honestly, its flavor wasn’t as amazing as I’d imagined—the texture was unique, but the price was steep. Still, the plantation grounds were serene, like a small tropical botanical garden. Spending about an hour exploring, learning, and buying some regular coffee beans as souvenirs was a worthwhile addition to the trip.
- Lunch: Tegukopi This restaurant had a distinctive atmosphere, with dishes blending local flavors and modern cooking. We ordered a few signature dishes, and everyone enjoyed them thoroughly—a great stop to refuel.
- Rotu Isyona Beauty Spa: After a day of travel, the evening spa session felt like heaven. The masseuses were skilled, with just the right pressure, completely relaxing our tense muscles. Surrounded by the scent of essential oils, we nearly drifted off to sleep. Bali’s high-value massages are truly an indispensable daily ritual of happiness.
- Delta Supermarket: Feeling refreshed after the massage, we headed to Delta Supermarket for some shopping. The store had a wide selection, from fresh produce and snacks to daily necessities. We picked up some fruit, drinks, and a few packs of famous Indonesian instant noodles to prepare for our ‘self-cook’ dinner.
- Dinner: Instant Noodles at Our Villa It may sound simple, but cooking instant noodles together as a family in the villa’s kitchen—adding a few eggs and vegetables, then gathering around the table to chat about the day’s adventures—turns out to be one of the most heartwarming and unforgettable moments of the trip. This unplanned, everyday ritual became a cozy highlight, wrapping up a fulfilling day with ease and joy.
Day 3: Between Nature’s Spirit and Bustling Streets
Today’s itinerary was a mix of contrasts and surprises—from forests to rice terraces, ancient trees to royal palaces—revealing Bali’s many faces.
- Sangeh Monkey Forest: We entered with a mix of excitement and caution, having heard that the monkeys at Ubud Monkey Forest are fearless, leaping and chasing after anything that catches their eye, especially food or plastic bags. We stuck to the golden rules: no eating, no staring, no touching. Watching from a safe distance, the kids were both nervous and thrilled. Luckily, the monkeys here were much tamer! It was a vivid lesson in respecting wildlife.

- Jatiluwih Rice Terraces: Next, we drove to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jatiluwih Rice Terraces. The vast green steps cascading down the hillside were open and serene. Perhaps due to the weather or season, the scenery felt “just okay”—not as breathtaking as expected—but still a peaceful spot to breathe fresh air and appreciate Bali’s agricultural heritage.

- Wisata Kayu Putih Ancient Tree: In contrast, this ancient tree was a delightful surprise! The massive white wood tree (Kayu Putih) stood solemn and majestic, radiating a spiritual energy. Standing beneath it, we felt tiny and humbled. The surrounding forest trail was tranquil, with an almost meditative stillness in the air. It was the day’s absolute highlight, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking nature and serenity.

- Ubud Palace & Ubud Market: In the afternoon, we returned to central Ubud. The palace is modest in size but features intricate carvings that whisper tales of a traditional kingdom. Next door, the Ubud Market buzzed with energy, offering everything from handicrafts and woven bags to sarongs. Bargaining is part of the fun here (start at one-third of the asking price!), and it’s the perfect place to pick up unique souvenirs for friends and family.

- Lunch: Jatiluwih Resto Dining at this restaurant right by the rice terraces offers incredible views. Enjoy simple, locally sourced dishes while gazing out over endless green paddies—the flavors seem to carry the scent of the fields.

- Dinner: Taman Dedari This is a beautifully landscaped restaurant with stunning views. We eagerly ordered their famous crispy duck, but it was just average—not particularly recommended. However, the coffee and drinks here are quite good, and more importantly, if you grab a great spot in the garden as dusk falls, you can take in the entire Ubud river valley with the cool breeze and twilight—an absolute prime spot for sipping coffee and soaking in the scenery.

Day 4: Exploring the Rustic Villages and Coastal Scenery of the East Coast
Today, we set our sights on eastern Bali, experiencing a more pristine and tranquil side.
- Tenganan Pegringsingan Village: This well-preserved ancient village (Bali Aga) boasts a unique social structure and traditions. The streets are neatly aligned, exuding a quiet and solemn atmosphere. We watched villagers weaving the famous double-sided fabric “Geringsing,” a craft of intricate patterns and rustic colors. There’s no bustling commercial vibe here, only a profound sense of history—strolling through feels like a journey through time.
- Tirta Gangga Water Palace: Next, we visit the former royal water palace. This is a paradise for photography enthusiasts! Exquisite ponds, fountains, stone carvings, and water lilies complement each other, and you can spot plump koi fish in the pools. Hopping across the stone stepping stones in the water is a fun experience for both adults and children. The entire garden exudes a Zen-like serenity and coolness, making it utterly captivating.
- Bukit Asah Desa Bugbug Seaside: Finally, we head to this hidden seaside gem on the east coast. It’s not a sandy beach but a grassy coastal hill (Bukit) overlooking the sea. The view is incredibly expansive, offering a panorama of azure waters and rocky reefs. Many locals and tourists leisurely picnic and fly kites here, creating a relaxed and carefree atmosphere. We quietly wait for the sunset here, experiencing a coastal vibe entirely different from Kuta Beach.

- Lunch: Kbri A simple local restaurant serving authentic Indonesian dishes, allowing us to quickly refuel for the afternoon’s itinerary.
- Dinner: Takeout Bebek Tepi Sawah Dirty Duck Dinner After the ‘Fairy Garden’ experience the day before, we had already lowered our expectations for crispy duck. But that evening, we asked our Villa’s butler to order takeout from the famous ‘Bebek Tepi Sawah’ . When the food arrived, the aroma was irresistible—the duck was fried to an incredibly crispy perfection, paired with rich sauces and side dishes. We can only describe it as ‘absolutely delicious’! This is what crispy duck should taste like! Enjoying a great meal in the comfort of our villa, this model of having the butler order takeout and paying him in cash was a super convenient and thoughtful service for a family trip , adding an extra layer of fun to our private villa experience.
Day 5: The Perfect Balance of Speed, Thrills, and Leisurely Shopping
On the fifth day of our trip, we arranged the activity the younger members were most looking forward to.
- ATV Off-Road Experience: This was the highlight of the day! We headed to the ATV track, and after a brief tutorial from the instructor, we rode into the mountains, fields, and muddy trails. Crossing streams, climbing hills, and swooping down slopes, the natural scenery along the way was incredibly raw and beautiful. For anyone who loves excitement and adventure, this is a ‘must-recommend’ activity! You might get covered in mud, but the feeling of speeding freely and laughing out loud became one of the most vivid memories of the trip.

ATV is not suitable for the elderly or children under 7—it’s too thrilling and there’s a risk of falling off 😄

- Last Stroll in Ubud & Massage: In the afternoon, we returned to Ubud for some final shopping, picking up souvenirs we hadn’t bought enough of. After that, we indulged in another massage session. This time, we tried foot reflexology. The therapist’s precise pressure on acupoints instantly relieved our tired feet after a day of walking. The soothing sensation spreading from our soles throughout our bodies was incredibly satisfying.
- Lunch/Dinner: This is Bali With a name that says it all, we enjoyed a mix of Western and Indonesian cuisine here. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the menu offered plenty of variety to satisfy the different tastes of the whole family, making it a perfect spot to refuel for the day. Trip Notes & Practical Tips

Based on our firsthand experience, here are a few tips for future travelers planning a trip:
- Currency Exchange: Locally, exchanging US dollars for Indonesian Rupiah usually offers a better rate than using New Taiwan Dollars or other currencies. It’s best to bring USD cash and exchange it at a reputable money changer in town. Quick Reference: Indonesia/Bali Travel Currency Exchange Guide: What currency is used in Indonesia/Bali? How to get the best exchange rate? Where to exchange money?
- Internet: The DJB physical SIM card we used had a very stable signal, providing smooth connectivity throughout the trip for navigation, communication, and checking information—very reliable. Quick Reference: 【Essential for Bali Travel】How to Get Internet/SIM Card/eSIM in Bali?
- Shopping & Price Comparison: Supermarket prices aren’t always cheaper than street vendors, especially for souvenirs. Vendors often allow haggling, while supermarkets have fixed prices. Compare based on the item type before buying.
- Transportation: For short trips around town or last-minute rides, ride-hailing apps like Gojek or Grab are very convenient and affordable, making them a great alternative to hiring a driver. Quick Reference: Grab or Gojek? A Complete Guide to Registering, Using, and Topping Up Gojek and GoPay in Indonesia/Bali
- Mosquito & Insect Repellent: Bali has plenty of flies and mosquitoes, especially near fields or in the late afternoon. Insect repellent is an absolute daily essential—carry it with you and reapply regularly. Quick Reference: What Essential Medicines/Supplies to Bring for Indonesia/Bali Travel? - Digestive Health (Proven Effective): To avoid stomach issues, we strictly followed these steps, and no one in our group experienced any digestive discomfort:
-
- Take one probiotic every morning on an empty stomach.
- Use only bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth.
- Be extra careful when showering to avoid accidentally swallowing tap water.
- When eating out, wipe utensils with alcohol wipes (especially for children).
- Choose restaurants that prioritize cleanliness and have good reputations.
- Always wash hands with soap or hand sanitizer before meals.
Rainy Season Travel Insights
The charm of Bali shines through in these small moments of chaos, revealing its irreplaceable brilliance. I’ve fallen deeply in love with many moments here:
- Whether in villages or hotels, you’ll always see people quietly sitting in bale (traditional pavilions), embodying that unique Balinese sense of leisure and ease.
- The simple, genuine smiles of the locals warm every encounter, from asking for directions to casual conversations.
- Despite years of tourism development, Bali’s core spirit—that atmosphere of devotion and tranquility—seems frozen in time, still exactly as I remember it from twenty or thirty years ago.
- The unforgettable local cuisine, from crispy bebek betutu (Balinese fried duck) to the wok-hearty mie goreng (Indonesian fried noodles), tantalized our taste buds every day.
- Enjoying daily massages at unbelievably affordable prices, letting the fatigue of travel melt away with essential oils and skilled techniques.
- At night, sitting in a beach bar with a gentle buzz, listening to a live band, with fine sand beneath our feet, stars above, and the symphony of waves and music in our ears.
Finally, we must say we were incredibly lucky. This whole family trip was joyful, and we all returned healthy and safe. Before departure, we made some preparations, such as taking probiotics every morning, which may have worked—no one had an upset stomach or digestive issues throughout the trip. Additionally, we encountered no theft, scams, or unpleasant incidents; airport customs was smooth and quick, and overall traffic was manageable.
Looking back, this Bali family trip was a perfect vacation filled with warm memories. It once again proved that with an open mind and moderate preparation, even in the rainy season, you can embrace Bali’s most radiant sunshine and smiles.
