Six-Day Sensory Journey in Bali: From Ubud's Spiritual Essence to Lembongan's Crystal Seas, a Voyage of Trust and Surprise

The following content is adapted from fellow traveler Liao Yiwen’s travelogue:

The moment the airplane tires gently touched the runway at Ngurah Rai Airport, our six-day Bali adventure officially began. This was not just an escape from daily life, but a meticulously orchestrated sensory feast filled with human warmth. From the spiritual heart of Ubud in the rainforest, to the majestic cliffs of Uluwatu, and finally floating in the transparent waters of Lembongan Island, we captured the multifaceted beauty of Bali in six days. This travelogue will detail the highlights of our itinerary and share the key to a smooth journey—a trustworthy local guide.

First Arrival in Ubud: A Lesson in Trust Starting at the Airport

At 1:30 PM on December 12th, the tropical sun warmly embraced us as we stepped off the plane. Exiting customs, we immediately spotted the hotel’s driver holding a sign with our names. We had previously informed the hotel about our need to exchange currency, and the driver was well-prepared. As we drove away from the airport, his first words were not small talk but a valuable local tip: ‘You’ll see many currency exchange places along the way. Remember, those with exceptionally good rates—don’t go in.’ His sincere eyes and simple English explanation of the risks instantly eased our unease in this foreign land. Following his recommendation, we successfully exchanged currency at a modest shop frequented by locals. The ninety-minute drive to Ubud flew by with casual conversation and our first glimpses of the scenic route. The pre-agreed fare of USD$26 was settled without any dispute, setting a reassuring tone for the journey.

We stayed at Kubu Tropis Hotel. Upon entering, the staff’s genuine smiles and cold towels immediately washed away the fatigue of the flight. Though the hotel is small, it exudes thoughtfulness: we once witnessed staff meticulously scrubbing the pool, which explains why the water is always crystal clear. The rooms are infused with relaxing essential oil scents, and the open wardrobe and balcony clothesline are incredibly practical for travelers. The only downside was the fixed showerhead, rendering our portable filtered showerhead useless. The hotel’s prime location, just a fifteen to twenty-minute walk from Ubud Palace, is surrounded by restaurants and shops, making evening strolls for food particularly convenient. This hotel became our comfortable base for exploring Ubud over the first three days.

Core Three Days: A Deep Dive with Professionals

The next three days were the highlight of this trip. I entrusted my itinerary entirely to Ani (Si Febri), a highly recommended tour guide from online travel communities, and her husband, who served as our private driver. Her popularity was such that I had to ‘go against the grain’—confirming her availability before even purchasing my flight tickets from Taiwan, much like booking a slot with a celebrity director.

This early trust paid off handsomely. Ani wasn’t just a tour guide; she was a professional itinerary consultant. When I sent her my ideal schedule, she carefully evaluated it and offered practical advice: ‘Ubud gets very congested in the evening; we should leave earlier for the sunset.’ ‘The volcano sunrise and paragliding are weather-dependent; let’s not rush to book tickets. We can decide on the spot in the morning, and I can help you purchase them there.’ She always anticipated blind spots that travelers might miss and patiently explained the reasons. Moreover, she transformed into an itinerary magician, suggesting: ‘The road you’re taking will pass by Tirta Empul Temple; it’s on the way, would you like to stop by?’ This flexibility and thoughtfulness added delightful surprises to our trip.

Highlights of the Three-Day Itinerary:

🏔️ The Spirit of Adventure:

  • Mount Batur Jeep Sunrise Tour: Departing in the early hours, we ascended the western slope of the volcano in a jeep amidst the chilly air. As the golden-red sun leaped from the sea of clouds, illuminating the contours of the volcano and lake, the awe was indescribable. To our delight, the young drivers were skilled photographers, familiar with every prime spot, and they took countless professionally composed, majestic photos for us.

The drivers arranged by Ani’s team over these three days were equally impressive. As we were in high spirits, we exceeded the standard 10-hour car rental limit on two days (with reasonable overtime fees), but the drivers always maintained their smiles, never complained, and even voluntarily helped us with our heavy luggage. Their professionalism made us willingly give extra tips at the end of the trip as a direct expression of our gratitude.

Epilogue: The Blue of Nusa Lembongan and the Ease of the Return Journey

At the end of our journey, we spent a day hopping over to Nusa Lembongan. We pre-booked round-trip ferry tickets on Klook (costing less than USD$13 per person) and deliberately chose different ferry companies to add some variety to our experience. The island’s azure seas and skies, along with the surging waves at ‘Devil’s Tears,’ added the final vibrant strokes to our Bali album.

On the final day, we returned from Nusa Lembongan to Sanur Port. Heeding online advice about the inconvenient transportation around the port, we contacted Ani again to arrange a one-way transfer service to Beachwalk Shopping Center in Kuta. This decision proved to be absolutely correct. The driver was waiting punctually outside the pier, and we even asked him to make a detour to Bali Banana for our last-minute shopping. The approximately 40-minute ride cost around USD$19, but what we gained was the most precious ‘ease’ while dragging our luggage.

Conclusion: More Than Just Once

Six days passed in the blink of an eye. Looking back at this journey, the beauty of Bali lies not only in the feast of landscapes—volcanoes, oceans, temples, and rice terraces—but also in the ‘people’ we encountered along the way. The sincerity of the hotel staff, the kindness of the drivers, and the professionalism and thoughtfulness of Ani’s team collectively wove a warm safety net, allowing us to explore and feel without any worries.

If asked what my biggest takeaway was, I would say it’s learning the art of ‘entrustment.’ By handing over our itinerary to a trustworthy local expert, she could use her knowledge and network to transform an ordinary trip into a surprising and in-depth experience. We have already started to miss it and are certain this won’t be the last time. Bali, until we meet again; Ani, we’ll be counting on you for our next trip!
