2024 Vacation Guide: 7 Long Holidays for 9 Days Off! Want to Visit Bali? Hold On!

Have you started planning your international travels for 2024?

This guide introduces Taiwan’s national holidays in 2024 and offers several leave strategies to help you enjoy the longest vacations with minimal leave days. In 2024, Taiwan has 116 national holidays, including 4 consecutive holidays of 3 days or more: New Year’s Day, Lunar New Year, Tomb-Sweeping Day, and Dragon Boat Festival. Mid-Autumn Festival and Double Ten Day fall on Thursdays, so they don’t form long weekends.

Here are some leave strategies to help you enjoy the longest vacations with minimal leave days:

New Year’s Holiday: Originally 3 days, take leave from January 2 to January 5 for a 9-day break.

Lunar New Year Holiday: Originally 7 days, take leave from February 5 to February 7 for a 12-day break. Alternatively, take leave on February 16 and 17 for an 11-day break.

228 Peace Memorial Day: Originally 1 day, take leave on February 26, 27, 29, and March 1 for a 9-day break.

Tomb-Sweeping Day Holiday: Originally 4 days, take leave from April 1 to April 3 for a 9-day break.

Labor Day: Originally 1 day, take leave on April 29, 30, May 2, and 3 for a 9-day break.

Dragon Boat Festival Holiday Originally 3 days off, taking additional leave from 6/11 to 6/14 allows for a 9-day break.

Mid-Autumn Festival Originally 1 day off, taking additional leave on 9/16 and 9/18 to 9/20 allows for a 9-day break.

Double Ten Day Originally 1 day off, taking additional leave from 10/7 to 10/9 and 10/11 allows for a 9-day break.

Bali, this picturesque gem of the Indian Ocean, awaits your arrival. By comparing Taiwan and Bali’s festivals, you can experience different cultural flavors in Bali. For example, while Taiwan is on holiday, Bali might be hosting important cultural or religious celebrations, offering you profound cultural experiences, or suggesting peak tourist seasons to avoid. Please see the table and explanation below (only overlapping holidays/festivals are listed):

Best to Avoid: Lunar New Year is Bali’s peak tourist season, attracting visitors from around the world, especially from East Asia where Lunar New Year is considered the longest holiday of the year. Originally, February 10th (Lunar New Year’s Day) is a national holiday in Indonesia, and February 8th coincidentally is the Ascension of Prophet Muhammad (also a national holiday in Indonesia), plus the weekend, making February 8th to 11th a flexible four-day holiday. Additionally, with the Indonesian presidential election on February 14th, many Indonesians might take February 12th and 13th off, creating a seven-day holiday, expected to cause major traffic jams in Bali. Can Participate: February 28th to March 9th Galungan & Kuningan: This is one of Bali’s most important festivals, usually lasting about 10 days, celebrating the creation of the universe and the victory of good over evil. During this festival, people offer sacrifices to their ancestors at home, seeking their blessings, and also hold ceremonies in temples to express reverence to the gods. Schools in Bali are closed for two weeks during this period, highlighting its significance!

Do Not Go: The 2024 Indonesian Eid al-Fitr holiday will start on April 8th (Friday) and last until April 15th. Eid al-Fitr is Indonesia’s most important holiday, celebrating the end of Ramadan (April 10th), but it’s also a time for Indonesians to spend with family and friends, equivalent to our Chinese Lunar New Year. Usually, Bali starts to fill up with locals from various regions around April 5th, making it one of Bali’s five peak seasons - the first peak season. This is a holiday we recommend you avoid visiting Bali!
