【2026 Bali Tourism Tax Guide】Latest Payment Tutorial, Love Bali Official Website Operation, and Whether Island Hopping Requires Re-payment Explained

Since February 14, 2024, Bali has implemented a new tourism policy called the “International Tourist Levy,” which applies to all international visitors to Bali, regardless of whether they are adults or children. Each person is required to pay a tax of IDR 150,000, equivalent to approximately USD$10. This policy aims to address the traffic congestion and waste issues faced by Bali.

Starting from February 14, 2024, traveling to Bali will cost an additional USD$10

  1. Effective Date: Starting from February 14, 2024.
  2. Applicable Individuals: Foreign tourists; including those entering Bali via direct flights or through other cities in Indonesia.
  3. Payment: It is recommended that travelers pay online via the Love Bali official website or by downloading the “Love Bali” app before arriving in Bali. The tax payment proof (Levy voucher) will be scanned and verified at the checkpoint.
  4. On-site Payment: The tax can also be paid at the arrival terminal of Bali International Airport and Benoa Port.

The local tourism bureau stated that the process of paying the tourism tax will not exceed 23 seconds and strongly advises tourists to pay in advance.

Do I Need to Pay Again When Island Hopping?

Some news websites have pointed out that if you go island hopping (Bali ---> other islands not under the jurisdiction of Bali Province ---> return to Bali), you will need to pay the tourism tax again when returning to Bali. But rest assured, even if your island hopping destination is not under the jurisdiction of Bali Province, such as the Gili Islands, Lombok, or Java, you “do not need” to pay the tourism tax again when returning to Bali! This is according to the official website FAQ (https://lovebali.baliprov.go.id/faq):

Popular Outdoor Activities in Bali

觀光税/旅遊稅僅需繳交一次!

The tourism tax only needs to be paid once!

Can I Pay On-site?

沒有線上繳交觀光税,下飛機後去這個櫃檯補繳

If you haven’t paid the tourism tax online, you can pay it at this counter after landing.

Regardless of the reason for not paying the tourism tax, enhanced checks are now in place.

The counter for on-site payment is shown in the image above. Please present your passport and have cash ready for processing.

Inspection Checkpoint

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) has officially established a ‘Levy Vouchers Secondary Inspection Lane’ between the arrival hall exit and the pick-up area. This means that even after clearing customs and collecting your luggage, before you exit the airport to meet your driver, inspectors will stop all passengers and require them to scan a QR Code.

  • On-site Payment: If you cannot present proof of payment, you must pay immediately via QRIS scan, credit card, or debit card.
  • Recommendation: Be sure to save a screenshot of the voucher on your phone to avoid issues with unstable airport Wi-Fi preventing access to the webpage.

Visa Exemptions from Tourism Tax

There are seven visa categories exempt from this tax, including diplomatic, official, transportation crew, student visas, temporary or permanent residence permit holders (KITAS and KITAP), etc. Applications for tax exemption must be submitted at least one month in advance, and the local tourism authority will approve within a maximum of five working days.

Exempt visa holders must submit their application in advance and meet the requirements of the Love Bali system. If approved, the Love Bali system will send a notification and proof of tax exemption approval (in the form of a QR code) to the foreign visitor.

Tourism Tax Payment Methods and Inspection Information:

  • The tourism tax can be paid upon arrival at Ngurah Rai International Airport or online via the LoveBali official website.
  • Some hotels and resorts can also assist guests with the payment process.
  • After payment is completed, a QR code certificate will be sent via email, which tourists must keep for inspection.

Bali tourism officials have begun on-site inspections at popular tourist spots, primarily at entry and exit points. Tourists who have not paid the tax will need to pay on-site using a credit card; cash payments are not accepted.

Tips for Paying the Tourism Tax:

  1. It is recommended to use a desktop computer for payment to avoid system issues on mobile devices.
  2. Ensure that your browser does not have ad-blocking or VPN enabled, as this may prevent the website from functioning properly.
  3. You can submit payment for up to 10 people at once. Required information includes passport name, passport number, email address, and arrival date.
  4. Island hopping does not require additional payment!

Why Implement a Tourism Tax?

The outline for Bali’s tourism tax implementation is as follows:

  1. Bali is tired of tourists’ inappropriate behavior and aims to protect its reputation.
  2. Governor Wayan Koster has ordered a code of conduct to be attached to tourists’ passports and has deported at least 136 foreigners for misconduct.
  3. Bali will impose a tourism tax of approximately $10 per international visitor, to be used for cultural and environmental preservation.
  4. Tourism has rebounded post-pandemic, but tourists’ misconduct has become an issue, including violating social taboos, disputes with local authorities, and traffic violations.
  5. Disrespect for local customs by outsiders has caused dissatisfaction, displeasing local authorities.
  6. The tourism tax is not a new concept, with similar precedents elsewhere, but Bali’s governor believes it will help improve the environment and enhance tourism quality.
