Indonesia’s Rainbow Sky Spectacle
In recent days, a stunning rainbow cloud phenomenon has been trending on Indonesian social media!
It’s not a filter or photo editing—but a real ‘rainbow cloud’ that appeared in the sky.
On May 1, 2026, above Jonggol, Bogor, Indonesia, many people looked up to see colorful clouds resembling the aurora—shades of pink, blue-green, lavender, and gold blending together, soft yet strikingly vivid.
This isn’t a myth, but a relatively rare atmospheric phenomenon: iridescent clouds.
When sunlight passes through a large number of uniformly sized tiny water droplets or ice crystals in the clouds, the light undergoes diffraction, splitting into different wavelengths of color—much like the rainbow sheen on a soap bubble. Unlike a typical rainbow, it doesn’t necessarily form an arc; instead, it often appears as irregular patches of color clinging to the edges of clouds.
This celestial spectacle lasted only a brief moment, but it quickly ignited Indonesian social media platforms. From Twitter and TikTok to Instagram, the feed was filled with comments like ‘healed by the sky’—in the midst of busy days, such an unexpected encounter with nature’s beauty is all the more moving.
If you happened to look up that day, you surely couldn’t tear your eyes away.
(Quick note: While iridescent clouds and ‘circumhorizontal arcs’ or ‘rainbow clouds’ form slightly differently, they’re all among the most dreamy daytime optical phenomena.)
