Bottom Line First: The key to getting your bearings in Canggu is to focus on the main thoroughfare, Jl. Raya Canggu (Canggu Main Road)—it cuts across the entire area, and the three main roads leading to the beaches (Berawa Beach Road, Batu Bolong Beach Road, and Padang Linjong Road) all branch off from this road. Once you understand this layout, you won’t get lost in Canggu.
In the previous Canggu guide, we gave a general overview of what Canggu looks like and why it has become Bali’s trendiest spot. Check out our introduction here:

Getting Your Bearings in Canggu / Map
Canggu’s roads can seem confusing, and first-timers may find them hard to navigate. But once you grasp a few key points, it’s not difficult to understand Canggu.
Canggu is primarily traversed by the busy Jl. Raya Canggu, known in Chinese as ‘Canggu Main Road.’ If you’re vacationing in this area, you’ll likely travel this road often, as almost all the roads leading down to the various beaches connect through it.

To reach the beach from this main Canggu road, you must take one of these three routes:
- Jl. Pantai Berawa
- Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong
- Jl. Padang Lingjong
Jl. Pantai Berawa
Let’s start with the rightmost road, Jl. Pantai Berawa. It leads to Berawa Beach, home to the iconic Finns Beach Club—the trendiest beach club in the area—and the post-pandemic newcomer Atlas Beach Fest. This road is usually packed with crowds by late afternoon.
What’s special about the public beach outside Finns Beach Club? Typically, when shooting sunset portraits from a distance with a camera or phone, people end up as silhouettes. But here, without any extra lighting gear and just using a phone, we captured a clear, well-lit portrait with a stunning sunset backdrop.

What else can you do in Canggu?
How is that possible? It’s because Finns Beach Club shines powerful lights onto the beach, so at sunset, simply standing anywhere on this sand gives you that professional, million-dollar lighting effect.
Not far from Finns Beach Club, Panama Kitchen & Pool is a great spot for photos.

What else can you do in Canggu?
It features a garden pool with a Caribbean-inspired vibe, and the food is pretty good too. We spent a few hours there snapping photos.
Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong (Batu Bolong Beach Road)
Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong (Batu Bolong Beach Road) sits right in the middle, lined with the most restaurants, bars, and cafes. It’s Canggu’s main shopping street and could be considered its downtown. If you’re looking for a recommendation, this is the best area to stay for first-timers in Canggu. Accommodations along Batu Bolong make it easy to walk to all the best cafes, restaurants, shops, and the beach.
Along this road, you’ll find ‘Love Anchor,’ a semi-open-air market selling exquisite handmade crafts. The items are beautiful but not cheap. Still, the vibe here is unique—there’s an indescribable feeling to the place. It’s great for snapping some Instagram-worthy photos!

What else can you do in Canggu?
Canggu also has several other unique markets. If you love treasure hunting, search online for ‘Canggu Markets Guide’ and visit them one by one.
Continuing toward the beach, Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong leads to the popular Old Man’s Bar and the sunset viewpoint at Batu Bolong Beach. Don’t forget to snap a photo with the iconic Oldman mural and sign—a true Canggu landmark!

What else can you do in Canggu?
This beach is also Canggu’s best for surfing. You’ll often see stylish surfers carrying boards or showing off their skills on the waves. It’s easy to find surfboard rentals or even hire an instructor to guide you.
Canggu Shortcut
Between the two roads I just introduced—Jl. Pantai Berawa (Berawa Beach Road) and Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong (Batu Bolong Beach Road)—there’s a secret shortcut connecting them! Locals call it the Canggu Shortcut, linking the Batu Bolong and Batu Berawa areas. No need to take the long way around the often-congested Canggu Avenue to get from one to the other—it makes commuting between these two main roads much faster. The Canggu Shortcut is a huge convenience. Back in 2017, it looked like this: a small path winding through lush, sprawling rice paddies, feeling like a slice of paradise—so open, so free!

But with Canggu’s rapid development, before the pandemic hit, Canggu Shortcut had already turned into this—crowds, traffic, billboards lining the road, and one after another of houses and cafes built along the narrow lane, stripping it of any charm. The road conditions worsened, traffic increased, and Canggu Shortcut eventually became a stretch where ‘someone wipes out every day’!
By the end of 2021, this shortcut was repaved with asphalt and the road seemed a bit wider, though it might still be congested during certain hours.

Jl. Padang Lingjong
The third main road, Jl. Padang Lingjong, connects to Echo Beach. Recently, the area near the beach has seen a concentration of shops and accommodations. Right by the shore, there’s La Brisa Beach Club, a sprawling venue that requires an online reservation to enter. The beach club’s decor is so stylish that it’s hard not to fall in love with its casual dining vibe—everything is built from driftwood, with wooden floors and structures, tons of coconut palms, and a pool perfect for kids. It has a unique charm all its own.

Canggu Food

After covering Canggu’s main roads and mentioning food, we can’t skip talking about Canggu’s culinary scene! Canggu is also a hub for health-conscious eating, and among its various healthy options, the Smoothie Bowl has become a super popular breakfast choice in recent years. Made with dairy, vegetables, fruits, and nuts, a Smoothie Bowl is the epitome of high visual appeal, rich texture, nutrition, health, flavor, and science—these adjectives are its best descriptors!
Start your morning in Canggu with a Smoothie Bowl for a healthy, fat-burning breakfast! After all, no one wants to be a chubby surfer failing to catch the eye of the cool crowd.
Canggu Transportation

Canggu grew from a small village, so its road planning is far from perfect—streets are narrow and easily congested. Yet the vibe here has attracted major international investors, who have started building large resorts. However, issues like narrow roads and traffic jams won’t be fixed anytime soon. Plus, getting from one spot to another often requires a long detour, which is why some say the best way to get around Canggu is to ‘kick off your shoes and walk along the beach!’
What other ways to explore Canggu besides walking? If you don’t want to grow old stuck in traffic, you can use Indonesia’s ride-hailing app ‘Gojek’ and its ‘Go Ride’ motorcycle service. This app is super convenient, with very low fares for rides, and you won’t get ripped off since prices are fixed. For a guide on using Gojek, check out my previous introduction and tutorial—Gojek has an English interface, so I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Indonesia!
