What else can you do in Canggu?

Bali started with Kuta and Legian, which grew into the liveliest area on the entire island. We previously made an episode called “Kuta Guide” — don’t miss my Kuta Guide when traveling to Bali!

Over the years, Kuta and Legian have evolved, with the bustling area gradually extending northward along the coast. Just north of Kuta/Legian lies Seminyak, sometimes called “Shui Ming Yang” or “Sai Mi Ya Ke” in Chinese. Originally a small village separate from the Kuta area, it became popular among expats living in Bali due to its affordable land, proximity to Kuta, and beautiful beaches. One luxurious villa after another was built, attracting exquisite dining, boutique shops, spas, and designer clothing brands. Today, Seminyak is the epitome of Bali’s fashion and trendiness, with Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak forming a continuous strip that’s the ultimate shopping and entertainment hub on the island.

Heading further north, about a 15-minute drive from Seminyak, we arrive at Canggu. The name sounds like “Chang Gu” (long valley) in Chinese pronunciation, but it actually has nothing to do with a long valley!

What else can you do in Canggu?

Canggu is a hotspot that has only emerged in recent years. It’s not far from the famous west coast attraction, Tanah Lot Temple — just a 10- to 15-minute drive away. Tanah Lot is a magical Hindu sea temple that can only be entered during low tide. Locals say that in the sea caves at the temple’s base, giant black-and-white sea snakes guard the sacred site.

What is Canggu really like?

Canggu is a coastal village that locals call “Kampung Bule”—“kampung” means village and “bule” refers to Western foreigners, so it literally means “Foreigner Village.” As the name suggests, it’s a place full of expats.

Canggu attracts foreigners to settle here, not only because of the stylish villas popping up like mushrooms, but also thanks to its stable, high-speed internet. These two factors have drawn many Digital Nomads—people who can work online—to live and work here.
