【First Time in Bali】An 8-Day Bali Trip: 11 Surprises and Discoveries Over Seven Nights
💡 Quick Answer

I finally made it to Bali this summer—a place I’ve always dreamed of visiting.

Bottom Line First: The biggest surprises from my first 8-day, 7-night trip to Bali were—the weather wasn’t as hot as expected but brought frequent downpours (pack a light jacket), chaotic traffic with almost no sidewalks (use Grab/Gojek to minimize walking), and incredibly creative bamboo-woven decor worth drawing inspiration from. The overall experience had both gaps and delights compared to my vision of a laid-back island, making it ideal for those with a flexible mindset.

I finally made it to Bali this summer—a place I’ve always dreamed of visiting. This trip had many moments that matched my expectations, along with some unexpected discoveries and reflections to share with you:

Weather

天氣

The weather in Bali wasn’t as hot as I imagined, especially since heavy rain and bright sunshine often occur on the same day. The downpours can be torrential, happening every day or two, but the wind isn’t too strong. It’s a good idea to bring a light jacket, as it can get a bit chilly when it rains. When you’re outdoors, always carry rain gear to avoid having sudden storms disrupt your plans. Sunscreen is also essential, because even with the changing weather, the UV rays are still intense when the sun is out.

Aesthetics and Decor

The shops, aesthetics, and decor in Bali are impressive, especially in some hotels and yoga studios, which creatively use bamboo and bamboo weaves for roofs and chandeliers. Vietnam’s bamboo weaving is more intricate, but Indonesia’s is more imaginative and grand. I really loved the bamboo-woven chandeliers here, and they’ve given me plenty of inspiration for future home decor. These unique design styles not only reflect local culture but also blend nature with modernity in a beautiful way. During your trip, take plenty of photos to capture these stunning decorations as inspiration for your own home.

Transportation

Transportation in Bali is truly chaotic—there are almost no traffic lights, cars and scooters share the same lanes without separation, and dedicated sidewalks are nearly nonexistent. Walking around feels nerve-wracking, as you constantly worry about getting hit. Comfortable shoes are a must, since potholes and puddles are everywhere. The traffic rules here are completely different from other cities, so it takes some time to adjust. When choosing how to get around, it’s best to use ride-hailing services like Grab or Gojek—they’re convenient and safe, reducing the risks of walking.

Plants

The vegetation in Bali is even lusher than I imagined, making it a paradise for plant lovers. Lush greenery and all kinds of exotic plants are everywhere, many of which I had never seen before in my life. The botanical gardens and nature reserves here are must-visit spots, where you can not only admire rare plants but also learn a lot about tropical flora. Don’t forget to bring your camera along to capture these vibrant, green landscapes.

Insects

Bali is also full of insects, moths, and ants. The locals have a harmonious attitude toward them—every shop places offerings at the entrance for the little critters to eat. It’s not unusual to encounter bugs in a spa; locals usually don’t kill them but instead pick them up with their bare hands 🪰. This respectful approach to nature is fascinating and reflects the local reverence for life. During your trip, it’s a good idea to carry insect repellent, especially for outdoor activities, to avoid bites.

Accessory Shops

Accessory shops in Bali are incredibly appealing—places like Blink make you want to step into almost every store. There are also many local designer brands that incorporate natural elements into their designs, offering great value for money. These accessories are not only beautifully crafted but also rich in local cultural flavor, making them perfect souvenirs or gifts. When shopping, take the time to chat with the shop owners and learn the stories behind each piece—it adds a deeper appreciation for their uniqueness.

Transportation

交通工具

Using Grab or Gojek for taxis is very convenient, and most drivers are polite. A 20-minute ride costs around USD$3. For longer distances, you can hire a private driver. This service is very flexible—drivers usually arrange the route based on your needs, helping you make better use of your time and visit more attractions. You can discuss the itinerary with the driver before departure to ensure a smooth visit to each spot.

Yoga Wear

I thought yoga wear here would be cheap, but it turned out to be quite expensive. Popular brands like Indigo Luna start at around USD$65 to USD$97, and the yoga wear downstairs at Alchemy costs over USD$161. At that price, it’s better to buy Lululemon. Although the quality and design of these brands are excellent, and they’re worth considering if you find a style you love, it’s a good idea to compare several stores to find the best fit and price.

Yoga Classes

瑜珈課程

Yoga Barn offers a wide variety of classes, but the venue feels a bit dated—perhaps my expectations were too high. There are many trendy classes, but not many traditional yoga sessions. The free yoga classes at hotels are actually quite good. If you’re interested in yoga, try visiting several different studios to find the classes and instructors that suit you best. The range of yoga classes here is diverse, with options for everyone from beginners to advanced practitioners, catering to different needs.

Food

Balinese cuisine mainly features pork ribs, fried noodles, and fried rice. If you love vegetable juices, you’ll adore the fresh fruit juices here—they’re incredibly fresh, and you’ll find yourself having two glasses a day. The ingredients are fresh and the flavors are unique, making them well worth trying. While enjoying the food, take the chance to learn about the local culinary culture and experience different tastes. Try local specialty restaurants to not only enjoy authentic dishes but also soak in the rich cultural atmosphere.

People and Service

人們和服務

Most people are very polite and warm, and it feels safe to walk the streets at night. The spa services here are excellent, affordable, and offer great value for money. I recommend trying different spas throughout your trip to relax and enjoy the leisurely atmosphere. The locals’ hospitality is truly heartwarming—whether in restaurants, shops, or attractions, you can feel their friendliness and attentiveness. This cultural warmth adds many wonderful memories to the journey.
