Inspection Checkpoint

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) has officially set up a “Levy Vouchers Secondary Inspection Lane” between the arrival hall exit and the pick-up area. This means even after clearing customs and collecting your luggage, before you step out of the airport to meet your driver, inspectors will stop all travelers and ask them to scan a QR Code.

  • On-site payment: If you cannot show proof, you must pay on the spot via QRIS scan, credit card, or debit card.
  • Tip: Be sure to save a screenshot of your voucher on your phone to avoid issues with unstable airport Wi-Fi.

Visas Exempt from the Tourism Levy

Seven visa categories are exempt from this fee, including diplomatic, official, crew members of transport vehicles, student visas, and holders of temporary or permanent residence permits (KITAS and KITAP). Applications for exemption must be submitted at least one month in advance, and the local tourism authority will grant approval within a maximum of five working days.

Exempt visa holders must submit an application in advance and meet the requirements of the Love Bali system. If approved, the Love Bali system will send a notification and an exemption approval certificate (in the form of a QR code) to the foreign traveler.

Tourist Tax Payment & Inspection Info:

  • The tax can be paid upon arrival at Ngurah Rai International Airport or online via the LoveBali website.
  • Some hotels and resorts can also assist guests with the payment process.
  • After payment, a QR code voucher will be sent to you—keep it handy for inspections.

Bali tourism officials have been conducting spot checks at popular attractions, mainly at entry and exit points. Tourists who haven’t paid the tax will need to pay on the spot by credit card—cash is not accepted.

Quick Tips for Paying the Tourist Tax:

  1. Use a desktop computer for payment to avoid system glitches on mobile devices.
  2. Make sure your browser doesn’t have ad blockers or VPN enabled, or the website may not work properly.
  3. You can pay for up to 10 people at once. Required info includes passport name, passport number, email address, and date of arrival.
  4. No need to pay again if you’re island-hopping!

Why Was the Tourist Tax Introduced?

Here’s the gist of why Bali implemented the tourist tax:

  1. Bali is fed up with unruly tourist behavior and wants to protect its reputation.
  2. Governor Wayan Koster ordered a code of conduct to be attached to tourists’ passports and has deported at least 136 foreigners for misconduct.
  3. Bali will levy a tourist tax of about USD$10 per person on all international visitors, earmarked for cultural and environmental preservation.
  4. Tourism has rebounded post-pandemic, but bad behavior—like social taboos, disputes with local authorities, and traffic violations—has become a problem.
  5. Foreigners’ lack of respect for local customs has sparked resentment, and the local government is not happy about it.
  6. The tourist tax isn’t a new idea—similar measures exist elsewhere—but Bali’s governor believes it will help improve the environment and enhance tourism quality.
