In Bali, water is not only the source of life but also a sacred element. For the Balinese, spring water is called “Tirta,” a life-giving and purifying force that sustains all existence. Tirta plays a crucial role in almost all religious ceremonies, believed to purify the mind, body, and spirit, cleanse negative energy, and bring blessings.
If you wish to delve deeper into Bali’s cultural and spiritual heritage, take the time to explore two famous water palaces and temples - Tirta Gangga and Pura Tirta Empul. Let’s discover the unique charm of these two sacred sites together.

Tirta Gangga: The Serene Water Palace
Tirta Gangga (translated as Tirta Gangga Water Palace or Ganges Sacred Spring Garden) is nestled in the lush hills of eastern Bali, a captivating water palace. This 1.2-hectare site was built in 1946 by the last king of Karangasem, blending Balinese and Chinese architectural styles.

The palace is divided into three levels, each offering a unique experience:
- The lowest level features large ponds filled with koi fish, adorned with statues of Hindu deities.
- The middle level is home to the iconic eleven-tiered Nawa Sanga fountain, symbolizing the nine directions in Balinese cosmology.
- The highest level is the sacred pool, where the holy spring water flows and gathers.
Tirta Gangga is not only a visual marvel but also a place of profound spiritual significance. Visitors can:
- Stroll through the gardens, stepping on stone slabs that traverse the ponds
- Swim in the spring pools believed to possess sacred powers
- Admire the exquisite statues and architecture, experiencing the harmony and balance of Balinese aesthetics
The best time to visit is during the dry season from April to October. Remember to dress modestly and respect local customs.

Tirta Empul: A Sacred Place of Purification
Tirta Empul Temple (translated as Holy Spring Temple) is located in Ubud, central Bali, and is one of the island’s most spiritually significant sites. Built in 960 AD, this temple is said to house sacred spring water created by the god Indra, known for its healing properties. It’s renowned for its holy water’s crucial role in Balinese Hindu purification rituals.
The temple is divided into three main courtyards:
- The outer courtyard, Jaba Pura, welcomes visitors with traditional stone carvings and gates
- The central courtyard, Jaba Tengah, houses the famous purification pools
- The inner courtyard, Jeroan, contains the main shrines
The most striking experience at Tirta Empul is participating in the ‘Melukat purification ritual’. The purification pool has 13 spouts, each representing a different spiritual purpose. Devotees immerse themselves under each spout in sequence while praying to cleanse body and mind.
Important notes:
- The temple is open to visitors who wish to participate in purification rituals
- Sarongs and sashes are required (provided free by the temple)
- Best visiting times are early morning or evening to avoid crowds
- Two spouts are reserved for washing the deceased and are prohibited for melukat rituals
