Detailed Map Explanation of Canggu
Understanding Canggu’s Layout/Map
Canggu’s roads may seem complicated at first glance, especially for newcomers. However, once you grasp a few key points, navigating Canggu becomes much easier.
Canggu is primarily traversed by the bustling Jl. Raya Canggu, known as ‘Canggu Main Road.’ If you’re vacationing in Canggu, you’ll frequently travel along this road as it connects to various beaches via branching paths.

To reach the beaches from Canggu Main Road, you’ll need to take one of the following three routes:
- Jl. Pantai Berawa (Berawa Beach Road)
- Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong (Batu Bolong Beach Road)
- Jl. Padang Lingjong (Padang Lingjong Road)
Jl. Pantai Berawa (Berawa Beach Road)
Let’s start with the rightmost road, ‘Jl. Pantai Berawa.’ This road connects to Berawa Beach, home to the very trendy ‘Finns Beach Club,’ the most fashionable beach club in the area, and the recently opened ‘Atlas Beach Fest’ post-pandemic. This road typically gets crowded by evening.
It’s worth mentioning the public beach outside Finns Beach Club. What’s special about it? Normally, when photographing beach sunsets, distant subjects often appear as silhouettes. However, even without any lighting equipment and using just a phone, we managed to capture a clear, well-lit portrait with a stunning sunset backdrop on this beach.

What else can you do in Canggu?
How was this achieved? It’s because Finns Beach Club projects strong lights onto the beach. So, simply standing on this beach at sunset allows you to take professional-looking photos with perfect lighting.
Not far from Finns Beach Club is Panama Kitchen & Pool, a great spot for photography.

This place features a garden pool with a South American Caribbean vibe, and the food is decent. We spent a few hours here taking photos.
Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong (Batu Bolong Beach Road)
Located in the middle, ‘Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong’ (Batu Bolong Beach Road) has the highest concentration of restaurants, bars, and cafes. It’s the main shopping street in Canggu and can be considered the town center. If I were to recommend an area for first-time visitors to Canggu, this would be the best place to stay. Accommodations along Batu Bolong offer easy access to the best cafes, restaurants, shops, and the beach.
On this road, you’ll find ‘Love Anchor,’ a semi-open-air market selling exquisite handmade crafts. The items are beautiful but not cheap. However, the atmosphere here is unique and indescribable. It’s a great spot for taking stylish photos!

Canggu boasts several distinctive markets. Treasure hunters can search online for ‘Canggu Markets Guide’ to explore them one by one.
Continuing towards the coast, Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong leads to the popular Old Man’s Bar and Batu Bolong Beach’s sunset viewing spot. Don’t forget to snap a photo with the iconic Oldman mural and signboard, a true Canggu landmark!

What else can you do in Canggu?
This beach is also Canggu’s prime surfing spot, where you’ll often see attractive surfers carrying their boards or riding the waves. You can easily find surfboard rentals here, or hire an instructor to guide you.
Canggu Shortcut
Between the two roads just mentioned, Jl. Pantai Berawa (Berawa Beach Road) and Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong (Batu Bolong Beach Road), there’s a secret shortcut known locally as Canggu Shortcut. It connects Batu Bolong and Batu Bewara areas, allowing faster commuting without having to navigate the often-congested main roads. In 2017, Canggu Shortcut was a picturesque path winding through lush rice fields, feeling like a slice of paradise - open and carefree!

However, with Canggu’s rapid development, especially before the pandemic, Canggu Shortcut transformed dramatically. Crowds, traffic, billboards, and buildings sprouted along its narrow path, stripping it of its former charm. The road conditions worsened, and accidents became frequent, earning it the nickname ‘the daily crash zone’!
By late 2021, the shortcut was repaved with asphalt and slightly widened, though traffic jams persist during peak hours.

Jl. Padang Lingjong (Padang Lingjong Road)
The third main road, Jl. Padang Lingjong, connects to Echo Beach. Recently, many shops and accommodation options have concentrated in this coastal area. By the sea lies La Brisa Beach Club, a spacious venue that requires online reservations for entry. This beach club boasts a stylish decor that makes it hard not to fall in love with its casual dining atmosphere. Inside, you’ll find driftwood-built floors and structures, abundant coconut trees, and a swimming pool suitable for children. It offers a uniquely charming vibe.

Canggu Cuisine

After introducing Canggu’s main roads and mentioning its cuisine, we can’t help but talk about Canggu’s food scene! Canggu is also a place that emphasizes healthy eating, with the Smoothie Bowl being the most famous among various healthy food options. It has become a super popular breakfast choice in recent years. Made with dairy products, vegetables, fruits, and nuts, the Smoothie Bowl is synonymous with high aesthetics, rich texture, nutrition, health, deliciousness, and science!

Canggu Transportation

Canggu has evolved from a small village, and its road infrastructure remains underdeveloped, with narrow streets prone to traffic congestion. However, its unique charm has attracted international investors, who are now building large-scale resorts. Unfortunately, issues like narrow roads and traffic jams are unlikely to be resolved soon. Additionally, traveling from one attraction to another often requires taking long detours. No wonder some say the best way to get around Canggu is to ‘take off your shoes and walk along the beach!’
What other ways are recommended to explore Canggu besides walking? If you don’t want to age while stuck in traffic, you can use Indonesia’s ride-hailing app ‘Gojek,’ specifically its ‘Go Ride’ motorcycle service. This app is incredibly convenient, offering affordable rates for rides with fixed prices, so you don’t have to worry about being overcharged. For a guide on how to use Gojek, check out my previous tutorial. The app has an English interface, making it highly recommended for visitors to Indonesia!
