When travelers arrive in Bali, they might be surprised: Is it true that the IDR 150,000 (approximately USD$10) tourist tax doesn’t actually need to be paid?? Because there doesn’t seem to be any check on whether it’s been paid online in advance, or any enforcement at airport counters. However, we must understand that this tourist tax system is more about encouraging visitors to understand and support the concept, rather than being a mandatory payment requirement.

Bali’s tourist tax was established as a means to improve issues like transportation, waste management, and cultural preservation on the island. This approach reflects the wisdom of Bali’s authorities and their commitment to sustainable tourism.
Firstly, the tourist tax is used to improve Bali’s transportation system. Traffic has always been a challenge in Bali, especially during peak tourist seasons when roads become congested and traffic jams are common. By using tourist tax revenue to improve road infrastructure and increase public transportation options, Bali hopes to enhance visitors’ experiences while reducing the impact of traffic congestion on local residents.
Secondly, the tourist tax is also used to improve Bali’s waste management system. With increasing numbers of visitors, waste disposal has become a growing problem. In the past, Bali has drawn attention for its trash issues, but now, through tourist tax revenue, authorities can invest in waste management facilities and education, thereby more effectively addressing Bali’s waste problems and protecting the environment while beautifying the landscape.
Additionally, the tourist tax is used to support cultural preservation and promote sustainable tourism development. Bali is famous for its rich cultural heritage, and a portion of the tourist tax is used to protect and promote the continuation of this heritage. At the same time, by supporting community projects and cultural activities, the tourist tax also helps increase local participation in the tourism industry, achieving more balanced and sustainable development.
Overall, Bali’s tourist tax system is an innovative approach aimed at improving the quality of life for local communities and protecting the natural environment through sustainable tourism development. By helping visitors understand the purpose and use of the tourist tax, Bali hopes to inspire more support and participation in building a better Bali.
Since only 70% of visitors actually pay the tourist tax, Bali has started random checks since March 26th! To be a responsible Bali tourist, we still recommend that you pay it!

The tourist tax is a visitor’s obligation, not an optional multiple-choice question!
- Following Rules is Basic Respect
The Bali government has officially implemented a tourism tax to maintain the environment, build infrastructure, and support local culture. Since you’ve chosen to visit, it’s important to abide by local regulations rather than trying to exploit loopholes for personal gain. - Your Travel Experience Relies on Others’ Efforts
The clean beaches, well-maintained roads, and cultural attractions you enjoy require funding for upkeep. Refusing to pay the tax is akin to “free-riding,” unfairly burdening other responsible travelers who share the costs. - Taking Chances Might Lead to More Trouble
While enforcement may not be strict at the moment, being asked to pay the tax at a tourist spot could be embarrassing and might even result in a negative record. Instead of worrying, it’s better to be a responsible traveler with peace of mind.
The Tourism Tax is a Commitment to Bali—If You Love Its Beauty, You Should Contribute to Its Sustainability.
