Over the years, the bustling area of Kuta and Legian gradually extended northward along the coast. Located north of Kuta/Legian, Seminyak, known in Chinese as ‘Shuimingyang’ or ‘Seminyak,’ was originally a small village independent of the Kuta area. Due to its cheap land prices, proximity to Kuta, and beautiful beaches, it began to attract expatriates living in Bali, leading to the construction of luxurious villas. This development brought in exquisite dining options, boutique shops, spas, and various high-end fashion brands. Today, Seminyak represents Bali’s fashion and trends, forming a prime shopping district stretching from Kuta and Legian to Seminyak.

Continuing north, about a 15-minute drive from Seminyak, we arrive at Canggu. Pronounced similarly to ‘Changgu’ in Indonesian, this place has no relation to ‘long valleys’ despite its name.

Canggu has become a popular spot in recent years. Located not far from Bali’s west coast landmark, Tanah Lot Temple, it’s about a 10-minute drive to this Hindu temple dedicated to the sea god. Tanah Lot is a magical place accessible only during low tide, and locals say that giant black-and-white sea snakes guard the temple within the sea caves at its base.

What is Canggu really like?

Canggu is a coastal village locally known as ‘Kampung Bule’, where ‘kampung’ means village and ‘bule’ refers to Western foreigners. Essentially, ‘Kampung Bule’ translates to ‘Foreigners’ Village’, aptly named for its large expatriate community.

Canggu attracts foreigners to settle in the area, thanks to the proliferation of exquisite villas and reliable high-speed internet. These two factors have drawn many digital nomads, who can work remotely, to make Canggu their home and workplace. The village boasts numerous coworking spaces equipped with fast internet, desks, and a conducive work environment, alongside many cafes and restaurants where one can also work online.
