Bottom Line First: The Varuna Show, which made waves upon its 2025 debut, is an underwater theater performance at Marine Safari Bali in Gianyar. It’s part of the “Bali Safari and Marine Park” (one destination, two worlds) alongside the adjacent Bali Safari Park, making it ideal for a day trip combining a land zoo and an underwater theater experience.
On this Bali trip, nothing left a deeper impression than experiencing the Varuna Show at Marine Safari Bali! This underwater theater, blending magic, lights, and acrobatics, completely transformed my expectations of marine park performances.
It caused a sensation upon its 2025 opening and was even featured by Indonesia’s version of Time magazine.
🚗 Transport & Entry
Located in Gianyar, Marine Safari Bali sits right next to the famous Bali Safari Park. The two parks are now collectively known as “Bali Safari and Marine Park”, which the official site calls “one destination, two worlds.”
Since it’s not in a bustling area, hiring a private driver is recommended. The park is larger than expected, and the tropical landscaping and cheerful atmosphere greet you right at the entrance. We pre-purchased the Day Varuna Premium package on Klook. While it wasn’t cheap, it was absolutely worth every penny!
🍽 Surprises at the Underwater-Themed Restaurant
The package included lunch at a meticulously designed “underwater world” themed restaurant. The entire space is bathed in blue tones, with walls adorned with coral, seaweed, and other marine elements, enhanced by special lighting that makes you feel like you’re in an underwater palace. The meal was a refined Western-style set menu, and I especially recommend their Balinese specialty drinks. The kids couldn’t get enough of the adorable desserts.
🎭 Varuna Show: A Spectacular Debut
Our Premium seats were in the central area, offering an incredible view. As the lights dimmed, the entire theater transformed into a vast underwater world.
The show follows the adventures of Varuna, the guardian of the deep sea, with the most breathtaking part being the meticulously crafted stage effects:
- Water curtain projections create an illusion of the deep ocean
- Acrobats dance gracefully ‘underwater’ (achieved through special costumes and lighting effects)
- Stage mechanisms instantly shift scenes, from coral reefs to deep-sea canyons in one fluid motion
- Surround sound immerses you completely in the experience
📸 Photo Ops with the Performers
After the show, staff guided us to a photo area. The kids were thrilled to pose with performers in stunning costumes, and these photos became some of our most cherished souvenirs from the trip.
