On the afternoon of August 17, a fire erupted in the basement of Ubud Market, lasting from noon until evening and still not extinguished. This fire has left 1,033 vendors unable to continue their businesses.

The fire began spreading in the market basement at 13:00 local time. By evening, over ten fire trucks had been dispatched to the scene, yet the blaze remained uncontrollable.

Gianyar Regional Secretary I Dewa Gede Alit Mudiarta personally inspected the firefighting efforts. He stated, ‘We are doing our utmost to extinguish the fire, prioritizing the safety of lives first, followed by addressing the vendors’ property losses. As the firefighting is still ongoing, we cannot yet determine the exact extent of the damage.’

According to available data, there are 1,033 vendors in the market, with approximately 400 operating in the basement (the origin of the fire), who are directly affected.

Dewa Alit added, ‘Regarding the relocation of vendors and other issues, we will discuss these in meetings. Our current focus is to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible and prevent it from spreading to other areas.’

As of now, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. It is reported that the fire may have originated from the motorcycle parking area in the basement.
