As one of Bali’s most iconic tourist destinations, the Ubud Art Market has drawn countless visitors eager to purchase local art and handicrafts. However, following a devastating fire last week and its aftermath, this vibrant market will remain closed for the near future. The fire broke out on August 17, 2024, destroying the new market building and dealing a heavy blow to the local economy and thousands of vendors.

The Devastating Impact of the Fire

According to official data, the fire destroyed the market’s basement and first floor, severely damaging over 400 stalls. Many vendors lost their goods beyond recovery, while others whose merchandise escaped the flames are still unable to retrieve them due to structural damage. Security personnel and police remain on guard around the market, preventing vendors from checking their stalls—especially those on the east side of the first floor, where goods soaked by firefighting water face unpredictable damage.

Cause of the Fire

At a press conference on August 23, Bali Police spokesperson Commissioner Pol Jansen Avitus Panjaitan provided an update on the fire investigation. According to the Bali Police Fire Laboratory’s findings, the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. Police are conducting further investigations to determine if any security personnel were negligent, leading to this disaster. He emphasized that such an incident should not happen again, and the police hope the investigation will deter those responsible.
