Bottom line upfront: The Gili Islands consist of three small islands—lively Gili T (Trawangan), serene Gili M (Meno), and vibrant Gili A (Air). Motorized vehicles are banned across all islands; you can only get around on foot, by bicycle, or by horse-drawn cart. From Bali, take a speedboat from Padangbai Harbor (about 2 hours); there are also departures from Sanur. Choose Gili T for a lively vibe, Gili M for a honeymoon getaway, and Gili A for a balanced option.
For travelers from around the world, Bali feels like paradise on earth, seemingly possessing everything one could dream of. Yet even so, for those of us who love to explore, this beautiful island can still fall short of satisfying our deepest desires. That’s why today I’m introducing a hidden gem not far from Bali, but even more enchanting and dreamlike—the Gili Islands!
Gili Islands Overview

The Gili Islands consist of three small islands: lively Gili Trawangan, serene Gili Meno, and vibrant Gili Air. Locals often refer to them simply as Gili T, Gili M, and Gili A. Departing from Padangbai Harbor on the east coast of Bali, a 2-hour speedboat ride will bring you to this paradise.

The moment you step onto the powdery white sands of the Gili Islands, you’ll be completely captivated by this stunning landscape. Surrounded by the vast, azure Indian Ocean, the islands feel serene and untouched. Motorized vehicles are entirely banned here, leaving only walking, cycling, and horse-drawn carts as the simple yet leisurely modes of transport.

Transportation on the Gili Islands: walking, cycling, or horse-drawn cart
Everywhere you look, you’ll find tangled palm groves, winding paths, and beachside bar huts, all blending into the island’s unique tropical vibe. There are three beautiful islands here, but if I had to pick just one, I’d unhesitatingly recommend Gili T (Gili Trawangan).
Gili T
Gili T, known as the party island, is the largest of the three, brimming with energy and warmth. It’s just a two-hour boat ride from Bali. Bicycles and horse-drawn carts are the main modes of transport here.
Fun and Experiences on the Island
On this stunning white-sand island, you can spend a few blissful days. While it takes some time to get here from Bali, once you set foot on land, you’ll find it’s truly one of a kind. Most visitors are from Europe and America, adding to its unique charm.

Gili T’s charm lies in its diversity. You can easily walk or cycle around the entire island—it’s really small but well-equipped. Here, you’ll find outdoor cinemas, pool bars, all kinds of restaurants, yoga centers, gyms, fish markets, cooking classes, diving activities, massages, and even hair salons. The locals are always warm and welcoming, and there’s even a monthly full moon party. It truly satisfies every craving for a vacation adventure.

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling
If you love scuba diving, Gili T is your paradise. The waters here may not have rich ecosystems or much coral, but you can get up close with all kinds of marine life. You can even spot sea turtles while snorkeling, and sharks while diving.

Final Thoughts
Lastly, I want to remind everyone again: please don’t buy prohibited items on the island. It’s not just a waste of money, but it could also land you in unnecessary trouble! You can, however, try the popular magic mushrooms on the island. Let’s explore this beautiful land together and have a great time!
PS. About Magic Mushrooms on the Gili Islands

What Are Magic Mushrooms?
“Magic mushrooms” refer to varieties of mushrooms with high levels of psilocybin, also widely known as psychedelic mushrooms. They are primarily used as recreational drugs, with effects including euphoria, altered thought processes, visual effects (hallucinations) with eyes open or closed, changes in the perception of time, and spiritual experiences.
The hallucinations are caused by a substance called psilocybin, which activates serotonin receptors in your brain. Some say it’s similar to LSD, just with milder effects.
How Long Do the Effects of Magic Mushrooms Last?
Like many psychedelic substances, the effects of magic mushrooms vary from person to person, so the experience can differ greatly from one user to another.
The effects last anywhere from 3 to 8 hours, depending on dosage, preparation method, and individual metabolism. The first 3 to 4 hours are often referred to as the “peak,” during which users experience the most vivid hallucinations and distortions of reality.
Are Magic Mushrooms Dangerous?
Since magic mushrooms can be found in the wild, they are often seen as a ‘natural medicine’ or a safer alternative. To some extent, this is true.
Magic mushrooms have minimal side effects. Unlike cocaine or cannabis, they do not increase the risk of mental health issues. They also cause far less harm to our internal organs than heroin or cocaine. In fact, psilocybin mushrooms have been found to benefit people suffering from depression.
The good news is that magic mushrooms are not addictive, meaning you won’t become dependent on them, and you won’t experience withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking them after long-term regular use.
The bad news is that there is still a risk of a ‘bad trip’ (keep reading to learn how to prevent this). Or you might accidentally eat a mushroom that looks similar but is a completely different species. For example, the angel’s trumpet mushroom is highly toxic and can damage your kidneys or be fatal.
Are magic mushrooms legal?
In Indonesia, magic mushrooms are illegal by law. However, the Gili Islands are considered a safe haven for seeking mushroom-induced euphoria. Bars openly sell magic mushrooms on their outdoor menus without fear.
Aside from their own ‘island safety,’ the only police presence on the Gili Islands is at the harbor. I’m not sure if these enforcers are bribed to turn a blind eye, but as far as I know, no one has been arrested for selling or using magic mushrooms. Still, we don’t know how long this will last.
On some other islands, like Bali and Lombok, it’s also possible to find them, but you have to be very, very careful. People trying to sell you drugs could be undercover police or scammers. Either way, it will land you in a lot of trouble.
Where to find magic mushrooms on Gili Trawangan
I believe almost every bar, restaurant, and hostel on Gili Trawangan sells magic mushrooms—if not on the menu, then under the table.
We highly recommend the beach bar at the left front of the Mediterranean restaurant on the west coast sunset beach, marked with ‘coco xiao’ on the upper-left blackboard.
