Bali Travel Reflections & Recommendations

The following is adapted from a travelogue shared by group member Chingju Wang

Travel Dates: February 6–9, 2025

This was my first-ever trip to Bali, and though it was only four days, it was a journey full of surprises and emotions. I’m especially grateful to the many seasoned travelers who offered invaluable advice when I asked online last September, which made planning this trip much smoother. To give back to the community, I’d like to share my detailed reflections and recommendations from this trip, hoping they’ll serve as a useful reference for anyone planning a future visit to Bali.

旅行日期:2025/2/6-2/9

1. Mara River Safari Lodge: A Unique Sleepover with Animals

1. Mara River Safari Lodge:與動物共眠的獨特體驗

The highlight of this trip for my 7-year-old was the Mara River Safari Lodge. This resort is located inside the safari park, making it incredibly convenient and offering close encounters with various animals. Every morning, we enjoyed breakfast while watching lions through the glass windows—a truly special experience. The lions seemed accustomed to the visitors’ gaze, striking poses as if they were modeling for us. Our child was mesmerized, watching with wide-eyed excitement.

Taking the park tram was also very easy, allowing us to see a wide range of animals up close. The kids kept gasping in delight on the tram, completely immersed in this vibrant environment. If you’re traveling with children, this is an absolute must-visit.

2. Ulun Danu Beratan Temple: A Serene Sanctuary

2. 水神廟:寧靜致遠的靈性之地

For our 70-year-old parents, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple was the most relaxing spot. The atmosphere here is incredibly tranquil, surrounded by mountains with a mirror-like lake and gentle breezes that soothe the soul. We took a slow stroll, sipped coffee, and soaked in the peace and beauty of nature. The misty mountain scenery felt like stepping into a fairyland; the elders especially loved this escape from the hustle and bustle, finding it a place to truly unwind.

3. Tanah Lot: A Majestic Sea Erosion Wonder

3. 海神廟:壯麗的海蝕奇觀

Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s iconic landmarks, with its stunning sea-eroded gates and platforms that perfectly matched our vision of the island. Though the seaside sun was intense, watching the waves crash against the rocks was utterly breathtaking. I recommend bringing a hat or umbrella and visiting in the late afternoon to avoid the heat and catch a beautiful sunset.

4. Rice Terrace Swings: Fun for All Ages

4. 梯田盪鞦韆:老少咸宜的放電活動

Bali’s rice terraces are famous, and we chose a spot with swings that was perfect for photos and fun for both kids and seniors. The children darted up and down through the terraces, burning off all their energy, while the elders sat nearby, enjoying the lush green views and the comfort of the breeze. The vibe was relaxed and ideal for a family outing.

5. Tirta Empul Temple: The Dual Surprise of Purification Rituals and a Presidential Palace

5. 聖泉寺:沐浴儀式與總統行宮的雙重驚喜

Tirta Empul Temple is a place steeped in religious atmosphere. Here, we witnessed many locals performing purification rituals—a scene both solemn and fascinating. However, compared to the rituals, I was personally more intrigued by the presidential palace up on the hill. This building is rich with history, and its surroundings are beautifully scenic, well worth taking time to explore.

6. Cliff Road: Breathtaking Views and Travel Tips

6. 斷崖公路:壯麗景色與交通建議

Cliff Road offers spectacular views, but since a landslide occurred there recently, although repairs are now complete, it’s still advisable to take a shuttle bus. Also, the sun here is extremely intense, so remember to bring a hat or sun protection to avoid sunburn.

7. Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park: Majestic Yet Somewhat Empty

7. 神鷹文化公園:雄偉卻略顯空曠

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park covers a vast area, with the most striking feature being the enormous Garuda statue—its height and scale are truly awe-inspiring. You can even spot this statue from the airport, a testament to its grandeur. However, the park’s facilities still feel incomplete, leaving it somewhat empty. I’d recommend visitors plan a short stop here to admire the statue before moving on to other attractions.

8. Private Driver: The Unsung Hero of the Trip

A big part of this trip’s success goes to our private driver Xiao Wu and his wife Betty Pingky. Since there were five of us with a lot of luggage, Xiao Wu specially arranged a large car to ensure we could move comfortably throughout the journey. His driving was incredibly steady—no sudden braking or jerky movements—allowing our sick child and elderly parents to rest well in the car.

8. 包車司機:旅行的幕後功臣

Moreover, Xiao Wu knew Bali’s traffic patterns inside out, perfectly avoiding rush hours and congested roads, which made our itinerary much smoother. Whether the elderly needed a bathroom break or the kids kept asking ‘Are we there yet?’, he always managed to arrive at our destinations right on time, keeping the whole family in a harmonious mood. His Mandarin is very fluent with standard pronunciation, making it easy to chat with both the elderly and children, adding a warm touch to the entire trip.

It’s worth mentioning that Betty Pingky was very meticulous before departure, helping us confirm the hotel package deals and adjusting the itinerary based on our needs. Even during the trip, when we casually mentioned a certain attraction, Xiao Wu would go out of his way to take us there. This thoughtful service truly touched us.

9. Why Didn’t We Hit Any Traffic?

Throughout this trip, we barely encountered any traffic jams, which pleasantly surprised me. Reflecting on it later, I think there were a few reasons:

  1. Smart timing: We visited Tanah Lot and Ulun Danu Beratan Temple during off-peak hours, choosing to go around lunchtime when traffic was lighter.
  2. Driver’s expert route choices: Xiao Wu knew Bali’s roads well—when heading to Tirta Empul and Jimbaran, he took some smaller roads to avoid congestion on the main arteries.
  3. Personal tolerance for traffic: Having lived in Jakarta for a long time, I’m used to endless gridlock. Compared to that, Bali’s traffic felt like heaven.

These factors combined made our journey much smoother and greatly improved my impression of Bali.

9. 為何沒塞到車?

10. Why So Few Photos: Busy Taking Care of the Young and Old

We ended up with far fewer photos than expected on this trip, mainly because once we got out of the car, I was almost always busy looking after our 7-year-old child and 70-year-old parents. The kid was energetic and needed constant supervision, while the elderly required timely rest and assistance. Although we missed out on some beautiful shots, being able to keep the whole family happy and safe felt more important than taking pictures. After all, the essence of travel is creating memories, not just checking in.

11. A Small Regret About the Villa Pool

The villa we stayed in this time had a beautiful setting, but the only downside was that the pool was 1.5 meters deep—too deep for the kids to enjoy playing in the water safely. This also meant the adults couldn’t fully relax, as we had to keep a constant eye on the children. My advice for future villa bookings is to always check the pool depth, especially for families with kids. Opting for a shallow area or a children’s pool would be much more suitable.

Editor’s note: Many villas in Bali have particularly deep pools. If you encounter a similar situation, Bali Luxury Pool Float Rental Service can easily solve this problem!

Summary and Rating

Our Bali trip left the whole family thoroughly satisfied. The professional service from our private driver and Bali’s natural beauty made a lasting impression. I had expected traffic in Bali to be as congested as in Jakarta, but we barely encountered any jams, which greatly enhanced our travel experience. On a scale of 100, I’d give this trip 95 points—the only deduction being the villa pool depth issue.

Although the trip was busy—we didn’t even have time for a massage (I made up for it right after returning to Jakarta)—at least the whole family agreed Bali was fun. The kids and elders all had a great time, which made all the effort worthwhile. The meaning of travel isn’t about perfection, but about the time spent together and the memories created as a family.

Recommendations and Tips

  • Private Driver: Highly recommend Betty Pingky and her husband Xiao Wu. Their service is attentive and thoughtful, and they speak fluent Chinese, making them ideal for family trips.
  • Itinerary Planning: Tailor your schedule to your family members’ ages and interests. For families with kids, include more activities like zoo visits or rice terrace walks; for elders, opt for serene spots like the Water Temple.
  • Accommodation Choice: When selecting a villa, be sure to check the pool depth, especially if you’re traveling with children.
  • Transportation Tips: Avoid peak hours and choose a driver familiar with local traffic conditions to greatly enhance your travel experience.

This Bali trip left our whole family with wonderful memories, and we look forward to visiting this charming island again in the future!
