Fake Taxi Motorcycles and Villa Burglaries Make Headlines: Bali Tourists Reminded to Stay Vigilant
💡 Quick Answer

Generally speaking, Bali is a very safe holiday destination. Compared to other popular tourist spots, there's far less street crime, pickpocketing, and scams he…

However, this doesn’t mean travelers can let their guard down completely.

Recently, villa burglaries and motorcycle taxi robberies have made headlines. While these incidents are terrifying experiences for the victims, they serve as a reminder that even on vacation, it’s important to stay alert.

Fake Motorcycle Taxi Robbery

Police arrested a 22-year-old Balinese man named Ketut Manih this week, who posed as a motorcycle taxi driver and stole a gold necklace from a 37-year-old Australian tourist in Legian.

According to police, the incident occurred at 2:40 AM on September 16 on Jalan Kubu Anyar Gang Sada Sari in Legian. The victim, GHK, was walking back to his accommodation when Manih stopped him, offering a cheap motorcycle ride home.

GHK accepted the offer, and they agreed on a price. After getting on the motorcycle with Manih, they turned onto Kubu Anyar Street and then into Sada Sari alley.

When they arrived in the alley, Manih suddenly stopped the motorcycle and pushed it onto GHK. While GHK was struggling to push the bike away, Manih forcibly removed his gold necklace and fled on the motorcycle. The necklace is reportedly worth up to $16,000.

當他們抵達巷子時,Manih突然停下摩托車,把車推倒在GHK身上。GHK還在掙扎著要把車推開時,Manih已經把他的金項鍊強行扯下,然後騎車逃跑。據說這條項鍊價值高達16,000美金。

AKP I Ketut Sukadi, the public relations officer of the Denpasar Police, confirmed that through surveillance footage and license plate tracking, they successfully located Manih.

“In addition to arresting the suspect, we also seized evidence of the crime, including a gold necklace with a cross pendant, as well as the N Max DK 5289 ADF motorcycle the suspect was riding at the time,” he stated.

Manih explained that he decided to commit robbery due to financial difficulties, claiming he was not part of any criminal organization and had never done anything like this before. However, these statements did not help him escape his predicament.

“The suspect admitted to stealing the victim’s necklace, intending to sell it to cover daily living expenses,” he said. Manih will face charges under Article 362 of the Criminal Code for theft, which carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison.

Villa Robbery

Meanwhile, in Canggu Pererenan village, a group of TikTok celebrities also experienced a villa robbery.

Villa Robbery

TikTok stars Dr. Richard Lee, Willie Salim, Kenneth Seymour, and Regiena Shaelynne were staying at a villa on Jalan Babadan. They left the villa at 9:30 AM on September 21 to go sightseeing, and upon returning at 6 PM, they discovered that a MacBook Pro M2, an iPad Pro M1, cameras, iPhones, and several million Indonesian rupiah in cash were all missing.

Ipda I Putu Sukarma, the public relations officer of the Badung Police, stated that the case is currently under investigation.

“According to the complainant’s description, the losses amount to millions, and the investigation is ongoing,” he said.

He also mentioned that the thieves had forcibly broken into the property.

Police remind tourists to always keep their valuables secure, especially when staying in private villas. If the villa doesn’t provide a safe, guests should proactively contact the host to find a secure place to store their valuables. Additionally, everyone should be cautious when tagging villa locations or uploading photos on social media, particularly those showing valuables, to avoid attracting unnecessary attention.

Final Reminder

Although Bali is generally a relatively safe holiday destination, tourists still need to maintain basic safety awareness, especially when they tend to let their guard down during vacations. Whether encountering individual crimes like fake taxis or more organized activities such as villa thefts, prevention is always better than cure. Keeping valuables secure, not casually revealing one’s whereabouts or displaying expensive items are simple ways to protect oneself from unnecessary troubles.
