The moment the plane’s tires touched down on the runway at Ngurah Rai Airport, our six-day Bali adventure officially began. This wasn’t just an escape from the daily grind; it was a meticulously crafted sensory feast, brimming with human warmth. From the spiritual heart of Ubud in the rainforest to the dramatic cliffs of Uluwatu, and finally drifting through the crystal-clear waters of Nusa Lembongan, we spent six days capturing Bali’s many facets. This travelogue will detail every step of the journey and share the key to a smooth and carefree trip—a local guide you can truly trust.
Arriving in Ubud: A Lesson in Trust from the Airport
At 1:30 PM on December 12th, the tropical sun warmly embraced us as we stepped off the plane. After clearing customs, we immediately spotted the driver sent by our hotel, holding a sign with our name. Before the trip, we had asked the hotel to arrange for currency exchange, and the driver was well aware. As the car left the airport, his first words weren’t small talk but a valuable local tip: ‘You’ll see many money changers along the way. Remember, if the rate looks too good, don’t go in.’ His eyes were sincere as he explained the risks in simple English. This kindness at our first meeting instantly dispelled the unease of being in a foreign land. Following his recommendation, we exchanged money at a humble shop frequented by locals. The 90-minute drive to Ubud flew by as we chatted and took in the scenery for the first time. The pre-arranged fare of USD$26 was settled without any dispute, setting a reassuring tone for the entire journey.
We stayed at Kubu Tropis Hotel. Upon entering, the staff’s genuine smiles and cool towels immediately washed away the fatigue of travel. The hotel is small but thoughtfully designed: we once happened to see an employee meticulously scrubbing the pool, which explained why the water was always crystal clear. The room was filled with a relaxing aromatherapy scent, and the open wardrobe and dedicated drying rack on the balcony were incredibly practical for travelers. The only minor drawback was the fixed showerhead, which made our own filtered showerhead useless. The hotel’s location is excellent—a 15 to 20-minute walk to Ubud Palace, surrounded by restaurants and shops, making evening strolls and meals very convenient. This hotel became our comfortable base for exploring the Ubud area over the first three days.
The Core Three Days: Let the Pros Take You Deep
The next three days were the highlight of the trip. I entrusted the entire itinerary to a guide highly recommended in online travel communities—Ani (Si Febri) and her driver husband. She’s so popular that I had to take a ‘reverse approach’: before even buying my plane tickets in Taiwan, I contacted her to confirm her availability, like booking a star director’s schedule.
This early trust paid off handsomely. Ani is more than a guide; she’s a professional itinerary consultant. When I sent her my ideal schedule, she carefully reviewed it and offered practical advice: ‘Ubud gets very congested in the late afternoon, so move your sunset plans earlier.’ ‘The volcano sunrise and paragliding are weather-dependent, so don’t book tickets yet. We’ll decide in the morning based on conditions, and I can buy them on-site for you.’ She always foresees blind spots that travelers miss and patiently explains the reasons. Moreover, she acts like an itinerary magician, proactively suggesting: ‘The road you’re taking passes right by Tirta Empul Temple—it’s very convenient. Want to stop by?’ This flexibility and thoughtfulness added delightful surprises to our trip’s framework.

Our driver for these three days (arranged by Ani’s team) was equally impressive. Since we were in a playful mood, we exceeded the ten-hour base for the car charter on two days (the overtime fee was reasonable), but the driver always kept a smile, never complained, and even proactively helped us carry our heavy luggage. Their professionalism made us willingly give extra tips at the end of the trip as a direct token of gratitude.
Epilogue: The Blue of Nusa Lembongan and the Ease of the Journey Home
At the end of the trip, we took a day to hop over to Nusa Lembongan. We bought round-trip ferry tickets in advance on Klook (around USD$13 per person) and deliberately chose different ferry companies to add a bit of variety to the experience. The island’s azure skies and turquoise waters, along with the crashing waves at ‘Devil’s Tears,’ added a final splash of vibrant color to our Bali album.
On the last day, we returned from Nusa Lembongan to Sanur Harbor. Remembering tips shared online—that transportation around the harbor is inconvenient—we contacted Ani again to book a one-way transfer to Beachwalk Shopping Center in Kuta. This decision was absolutely right. The driver was waiting punctually outside the dock, and we even asked him to make a quick detour to Bali Banana for some last-minute shopping. The roughly 40-minute ride cost about USD$19, but in return, we gained the most precious ‘ease’ while dragging our luggage.
Conclusion: More Than Just One Beautiful Experience
Six days passed in the blink of an eye. Looking back on this journey, the beauty of Bali lies not only in the visual feast of volcanoes, oceans, temples, and rice terraces, but also in the people we met along the way. The sincerity of the hotel staff, the kindness of our driver, and the professionalism and thoughtfulness of Ani’s team all wove together a warm safety net, allowing us to explore and immerse ourselves without any worries.
If you ask me what the greatest takeaway was, I think it’s learning the art of ‘entrusting.’ By handing our itinerary to a trustworthy local expert, she used her knowledge and network to transform an ordinary trip into a deep, surprise-filled experience.
