Sanur, Bali Launches New Tourist Shuttle Bus Trial Operation

This program, introduced by the Denpasar Transportation Agency, is specifically designed for the Sanur resort area. Unlike the existing Trans Metro Dewata bus routes, the Sanur shuttle bus will operate exclusively within the Sanur area, offering visitors a ‘hop-on, hop-off’ mode of transportation.

The shuttle bus features an open-air design, allowing passengers to enjoy the scenic views along the route while benefiting from natural ventilation. However, some passengers have noted that the experience may be slightly affected during heavy rain or strong winds.

The current bus route includes:

  • Mertasari Beach
  • Pangembak Street
  • Mertasari Street
  • Danau Poso Road
  • Danau Tamblingan Road
  • Danau Toba Road
  • The final stop is near the SMP Wisata area, adjacent to the Sanur Special Economic Zone

Passenger Putu Ardiyasa Raditya Putra shared his positive experience with the shuttle service but pointed out that the current bus stops only have signage and lack shelters or seating. He hopes for improved waiting facilities in the future. He added, ‘Foreign tourists might be more accustomed to this mode of public transportation, as it is quite common in their countries.’

Regarding the Bali Sanur area’s electric shuttle (Shuttle / Bemo Listrik) fees and payment methods:

1. Is there currently a fee?

1. 目前是否收費?

  • Now Charging: The shuttle service was free during its trial period in August 2025, but it has now transitioned to full operation and begun charging fees.
  • Fare: * Regular Passengers: A single ride costs approximately 5,000 Indonesian Rupiah (Rp 5,000).
    • Monthly Pass: For local employees, there is also a monthly pass option priced at 100,000 Indonesian Rupiah.

2. How to Pay?

This electric shuttle operates on a cashless payment system, so we recommend preparing the following tools before boarding:

  • E-Money Card: This is the most recommended and reliable payment method. You can use prepaid cards issued by major Indonesian banks, such as:
    • Mandiri e-money
    • BCA Flazz
    • BNI TapCash
    • BRI Brizzi
    • Note: These cards can be purchased and topped up at local convenience stores like Indomaret or Alfamart.
  • Contactless Credit Card: Some vehicles are equipped with contactless card readers, theoretically supporting international contactless credit cards (e.g., Visa/Mastercard). However, due to occasional network connectivity issues, it’s safer to have a physical e-money card as a backup.
  • QRIS Scan: If you have installed local Indonesian mobile payment apps (e.g., GoPay, OVO, Dana), you can usually complete payment by scanning the QRIS code on the vehicle.
  • Cash Payment: Officially, the system promotes cashless transactions. Although drivers may sometimes accommodate cash payments, tourists have reported being asked to pay higher amounts (e.g., 10,000 Indonesian Rupiah), so electronic payment is strongly recommended.

3. Service Information

  • Operating Hours: Approximately from 06:00 or 07:00 in the morning until 22:00 (last departure around 21:00).
  • Route: Primarily covers the tourist hub of Sanur, including Jalan Danau Tamblingan, the Mertasari area, and major hotel and beach access points.

If you’re staying in Bali, this is an eco-friendly and cost-effective option for short-distance travel!

This shuttle service trial is an innovative initiative by Bali authorities to address traffic congestion. Officials, including Bali Governor Wayan Koster, have emphasized that improving island transportation is key to enhancing residents’ quality of life and ensuring sustainable tourism development.

In addition to land-based improvements, the local government is actively developing “water taxi” services. A recently launched sea shuttle route connects Benoa and Tanjung Benoa, significantly reducing the original 30-minute drive to just 10-15 minutes by sea.

In the coming months, the government plans to launch a high-speed boat service connecting Bali Airport and Canggu, expected to be operational by late 2025 or early 2026.

The Badung Regency government has confirmed that the related project is in its final planning stages, with hopes that this initiative will provide tourists with more efficient and comfortable transportation options.
