Getting to Know Taiwan’s Full-Service Airline: Starlux
Starting September 1, 2024, Taiwan’s full-service airline Starlux Airlines officially launches direct flights from Taipei to Jakarta, Indonesia, operating five times a week. Starlux Airlines is a new airline founded in 2017 by Chang Kuo-wei, son of Evergreen Group founder Chang Yung-fa. Since its inaugural flight in January 2020, Starlux has garnered significant attention, with tickets often selling out quickly.

From Founding to Expansion: Starlux’s Journey
Four years after its founding, Starlux has expanded to over 20 Asian destinations and three U.S. cities, with a growing fleet. As a full-service airline, Starlux has ordered several state-of-the-art Airbus aircraft, including the A321neo and A350-1000, becoming the first Taiwanese airline to operate these models.
In February of this year, at the Singapore Airshow, Starlux signed an agreement with Airbus to purchase five A350F freighters and three A330neo aircraft. The agreement was signed by Starlux Chairman Chang Kuo-wei and Airbus Chief Commercial Officer Christian Scherer.
Cabin Design and Service Features
Starlux’s cabin interiors are designed by BMW Designworks, with all seats equipped with entertainment systems. Economy class seats feature 10.1-inch 720p displays and offer complimentary basic Wi-Fi (including SMS functionality). The cabin’s unique fragrance, created by P.Seven, blends wood, leather, and floral scents, enhancing passenger comfort. The airline’s uniforms, designed by local designer Sean Yin, draw inspiration from the retro-futurism of the 1940s and 1950s.

Entering the Indonesian Market
Starlux’s expansion plan includes further exploration of the Southern Hemisphere market, with Jakarta selected as a new destination. Simon Liu, Chief Strategy Officer of Starlux Airlines, stated: ‘We are grateful for the support from all our partners, which has made the launch of the Jakarta route proceed smoothly. As the economic and cultural hub of Indonesia, Jakarta hosts many Taiwanese enterprises and offers a rich labor market.’
‘Starlux Airlines’ extensive network in Asia, coupled with flights to North America (Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle), will provide convenience for travelers to and from Indonesia. We believe our high-quality service and cabin experience will contribute to our growth in the Indonesian market and offer passengers premium travel options,’ Liu added.
John Chung Chen, Economic Minister of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office, also remarked: ‘Today marks the inaugural flight of Starlux Airlines from Jakarta to Taipei. This new route symbolizes the close ties between Taiwan and Indonesia and serves as a pathway to more business opportunities and cultural exchanges.’
Starlux Airlines’ Taipei-Jakarta route operates five times a week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Flight JX 761 departs from Taipei at 8:10 AM and arrives in Jakarta at 12:30 PM; Flight JX 762 departs from Jakarta at 1:30 PM and arrives in Taipei at 7:30 PM.
Starlux Plans to Fly to Bali
In addition to the currently operational Taipei-Jakarta route, Starlux Airlines is also planning flights to Bali. They are meticulously calculating the optimal timing for flights from Taipei, Taiwan, to Bali to ensure the successful launch of this new route. As Indonesia’s premier tourist destination, Bali continues to attract visitors from around the globe. Starlux Airlines aims to provide more convenient and high-quality travel options for passengers from Taiwan and other countries through this new route.

The launch of this new route will further strengthen the connection between Taiwan and Indonesia, offering a more direct travel path for Taiwanese travelers who love Bali, eliminating the inconvenience of layovers. With Starlux’s ongoing expansion, they are gradually building a comprehensive route network covering major tourist destinations across Asia and globally. Starlux anticipates that more Taiwanese and international travelers will explore Bali’s enchanting scenery through this new route in the future.
As this plan is gradually implemented, Starlux’s route expansion will inject new vitality into Indonesia’s tourism industry, further promoting cooperation in tourism, business, and cultural exchanges between the two sides. Whether for relaxing vacations or business trips, this route will provide passengers with convenient and comfortable flight experiences.
