Our community member Mr. Guo recently shared his personal experience of being bitten twice by a stray dog on the streets of Kuta, a popular Bali destination. Shocked, he immediately went to the hospital for emergency shots.
Treatment costs include rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin injections. To date, he has paid over IDR 110 million, equivalent to USD$5,800, and the treatment course is not yet complete!
Local nurses also admitted that rabies cases are frequent in Indonesia, and many locals cannot afford immunoglobulin, leaving the virus to incubate until symptoms appear. By then, it’s often too late for treatment. The nurse sadly stated: “We can’t do anything for them.”
TV news report:
What’s the Difference Between Rabies Vaccine and Immunoglobulin? Is There a Big Cost Difference?
Many people are confused about these two “rabies shots”. In fact, their functions and prices differ greatly:
Rabies Vaccine
- Purpose: Stimulates the body to actively produce antibodies
- Applicable: Can be used for pre-travel prevention or post-bite treatment
- Dosage: Preventive requires three doses, post-bite requires five doses
- Cost: Approximately USD$32〜81 per dose
Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG)
- Purpose: Provides immediate antibodies to bridge the gap before the vaccine takes effect
- Timing: Administered immediately after a bite, the sooner the better
- Expensive: Dosage calculated by body weight, total cost may exceed USD$3,226
- Prices are even higher in places like Indonesia, as seen in Mr. Guo’s case which cost USD$5,968
✅ Recommendation: Getting a preventive vaccine before departure can significantly reduce subsequent treatment costs and risks
Why Are Medical Costs in Indonesia Higher Than Other Southeast Asian Countries?
While rabies treatment costs are relatively low in countries like the Philippines and Thailand, Indonesia’s related treatment fees are surprisingly high, possibly due to:
- Rabies immunoglobulin often needs to be imported, increasing costs
- Foreign tourists are often charged higher-tier medical fees
- Local private healthcare system lacks price transparency
Therefore, planning for health and insurance before traveling to Indonesia is an essential investment.
⚠️ Latest Epidemic Alert: Rabies Cases Surging in Bali! 13 People Already Bitten by Dogs!
According to the latest news in 2024, there have been multiple suspected and confirmed cases of rabies in Bali recently, raising concerns about the epidemic.
In Batuan Village, Sukawati, Gianyar Regency, a dog suspected of being infected with rabies bit five people in just a few days, including two children. The dog exhibited obvious abnormal behavior: disorientation, excessive excitement, and strong aggression. However, local authorities did not handle the situation promptly, and on May 29th, the dog even broke through glass, injuring multiple people.
At the same time, in Melaya village of Jembrana, a black-and-white stray dog attacked eight people, including a cat.
According to data from Bali’s health authorities, as of now:
- Over 39,000 cases of suspected rabies-related animal bites have been reported this year
- 90% were caused by dogs
- 268 confirmed human infections, with 5 fatalities

Bali authorities urge:
👉 Pet owners must ensure their dogs receive regular rabies vaccinations
👉 Tourists should avoid contact with unfamiliar animals
👉 If bitten, seek immediate medical attention for vaccination and immunoglobulin treatment
Even paradise has hidden risks - don’t let your guard down.
Pre-travel health checklist ✅
- Get pre-travel rabies vaccination (3 doses) before departure
- Purchase travel medical insurance covering animal bites and infectious diseases
- Avoid contact with unfamiliar or stray animals
- Research nearby medical facilities offering immunoglobulin treatment at your accommodation
Prevention is better than cure, especially in areas with limited medical resources!
Frequently Asked Questions FAQ
1. Is the rabies vaccine necessary?
If you are traveling to high-risk areas such as Indonesia, Southeast Asia, or Africa, it is strongly recommended to get vaccinated preventively. The vaccine is a life-saving investment compared to the pain and high costs afterward.
2. Can I skip the rabies immunoglobulin?
If you have not been vaccinated preventively, you must receive the rabies immunoglobulin along with the vaccine after being bitten. Missing the golden period can be life-threatening.
3. Can rabies be contracted in Taiwan?
Although Taiwan is considered a non-endemic area, there have been records of wild animals (such as ferret badgers) carrying the virus. Avoiding contact with wild animals is still essential.
4. Is there a chance of recovery once rabies symptoms appear?
Extremely low. Once rabies symptoms develop, the mortality rate is almost 100%. Therefore, all preventive measures should be completed before the onset of symptoms.
5. Will the Vaccine Have Side Effects?
Most people only experience mild discomfort such as localized redness, fever, and fatigue, which are within an acceptable range.
