Preparation and Booking
Before our trip, we found Nukuwera Adventure, a professional cave river tubing company, through a recommendation in the Ubud Guide. The guide mentioned that this was an adventure where you could experience Bali’s historical WWII caves while tubing! This adventurous description immediately caught our attention.
The booking process was straightforward. We reserved our spots for four people through Klook. The cost was approximately $50 per person, regardless of age, which included hotel transfers, tubing, lunch, and ATV. I thought it was quite a good deal for a full day of activities!

Pre-Trip Tips:
Starting the Day’s Adventure
On the day of the activity, the shuttle arrived promptly at 10 AM at our accommodation, Bidadari Private Villas & Retreat. This serene retreat in the outskirts of Ubud was our carefully chosen lodging. It took about 15 minutes to drive from Ubud to the Nukuwera base. The base had well-equipped changing rooms and lockers, allowing us to store our belongings securely.
After boarding their shuttle bus, we headed further upstream to the starting point. Along the way, our guide shared the historical background of this man-made river. It turns out that during World War II, Japanese troops had established bases in these caves, and today, these historical sites have become part of the adventure.
Upon getting off the shuttle bus, we had to descend into the valley to reach the starting point of the rafting. Here, the staff warmly greeted us and provided each person with rafting gear, including life jackets, safety helmets, specially designed comfortable rafting tubes (with seat cushions), waterproof bags (for carrying small personal items), and more.
The guide handed us over to the rafting river leader, who gave us a brief safety briefing in English. This included the correct sitting posture, how to control the direction, and what to do when hearing instructions in the caves, such as lying flat. What was particularly reassuring was their emphasis that this route was specifically designed for families, with gentle yet fun currents, making it perfect for first-time visitors and children.
Cave Exploration and Rafting Experience

River Rafting Highlights:
- Mysterious Cave Section: Entering pitch-dark caves, kids feel both nervous and excited
- Rapid Challenge Section: Several well-designed small rapids make rafting fun but completely safe, with kids screaming and laughing happily
- Rainforest Exploration Section: Drifting through lush tropical rainforests, spotting various tropical plants
- Calm Water Relaxation Section: Gentle waters allow us to float leisurely, enjoying the broad field views on both sides
The entire rafting experience lasted about 45 minutes. The leader was very professional, ensuring our safety while also taking photos throughout and pointing out special sights along the way.
Safety Measures and Family-Friendly Design
As a parent with children, my primary concern was the safety of the activity. Nukuwera excelled in this aspect. They assigned one leader for every 4-6 people, meaning our family of four had our own dedicated leader. They also provided appropriately sized life jackets and more stable rafting tubes for the kids.
It’s worth noting that this activity is highly recommended by many family travel bloggers as “a safer alternative to traditional rafting” due to its relatively calm waters and constant supervision by guides. Our 7-year-old daughter was initially scared but quickly fell in love with the activity thanks to the guide’s encouragement and professional guidance, even begging to go again!
Value-for-Money Adventure Packages
We chose the ‘ATV + Cave River Tubing’ combo package, which made our Bali adventure even more perfect! The package includes:
- 45-minute cave river tubing adventure
- Authentic Balinese lunch
- Approximately 1.5 hours of thrilling ATV off-road experience
- Professional guide throughout
- Dedicated activity leaders
- Hotel pick-up and drop-off service
Lunch Break
After the tubing, we changed into dry clothes and were taken to Nukuwera’s bamboo restaurant built on the cliff edge overlooking the river valley. Despite the midday sun, a cool breeze continuously flowed through the valley, perhaps carrying some moisture from the river, making us forget we were in the tropical heat.
After lunch, we rested at our table. My son had already fallen asleep due to the comfort, and the gamelan music played by the restaurant flowed like water in our ears. I half-closed my eyes, counting the light spots leaking through the gaps in the bamboo roof, enjoying this rare moment of tranquility.
ATV Adventure Highlights
“Ready to get muddy?” Our guide suddenly appeared beside our table, and the four of us boarded the shuttle to the ATV starting point.
This 90-minute ATV adventure was full of surprises! We followed our professional coach through the most authentic rural scenery of Bali. The ATV convoy initially moved slowly through traditional villages, passing by Balinese thatched-roof temples, with local children waving enthusiastically from their porches. The green rice fields swayed like waves in the wind, occasionally startling a few egrets that drew graceful arcs across the blue sky.
Our coach led us into natural puddles formed after the rain, and the cool mud instantly splashed all over us! On the red dirt trails filled with tire tracks, we learned how to control the balance of our vehicles, with screams and laughter echoing through the jungle whenever the tires slipped.
The itinerary includes several scenic stops: taking photos by a small waterfall in the valley, overlooking the terraced rice fields, with a faint rainbow appearing in the mist like a mark of adventure.
Every turn brings surprises, every journey has its story - this is undoubtedly the most vivid way to experience the rural beauty of Bali!
The ATV ride is also super fun! But that’s not the focus of this article, so we’ll keep it brief. For detailed guides on ATV activities and FAQs, please refer here.
