Bali Ubud Hot Air Balloon Adventure: A Dreamy Family Date in the Sky

“Mom, are we really going to fly up there?” My 5-year-old Xiao Bao clung tightly to my shirt, his eyes sparkling with excitement. My husband adjusted his camera with a smile, “Don’t worry, Daddy will protect you.” This was our family’s most special adventure in Bali - our first hot air balloon ride in Ubud.

Bali’s Only Family-Friendly Aerial Adventure

As the island’s only tethered hot air balloon, this 23-meter-high rainbow giant is perfect for family experiences. Seeing us with our child, the staff thoughtfully brought out a small step stool: “Little ones can use this to climb up first!” The wicker basket was more spacious than expected, comfortably fitting the three of us (with a total weight limit of 150 kg, it’s perfectly fine for families with children).

The Magic of Twilight

We chose the highly recommended 17:30 twilight flight. As the flame roared to life, our little one gasped and snuggled into dad’s arms, but giggled the next moment at the sensation of rising. From 50 meters up, Ubud’s rice terraces looked like they were draped in gold under the sunset, with Mount Agung faintly visible in the dusk. My husband held me with one arm and shielded our curious child with the other. Seeing Bali from this perspective was truly different!

Family-Friendly Services

  • Child-Friendly: Staff explain the principles of hot air balloons to kids and award a “Little Pilot Certificate” after the flight, which our child proudly held up for over a dozen photos.
  • Family Photo Shoot: An accompanying photographer captured our moments of embrace in the air.
  • Delicious Dinner: A Singaporean chef prepared a special kids’ meal that even our picky eater enjoyed, while my husband and I savored a romantic candlelit dinner with local flavors.

Gentle Reminders

  • Evening flights are the most popular, so it’s recommended to check in 30 minutes early. Otherwise, like us, you might end up waiting until it’s almost dark (fortunately, the staff prioritized families with children).
  • The basket edge reaches chest height for toddlers, so adults need to hold onto their children tightly throughout the flight (my husband never let go).
  • The flame noise during the flight can be loud, so sensitive children might want to bring earplugs (our little one was startled at first but quickly forgot her fear once captivated by the views).

These brief 10 minutes not only allowed us to witness the grandeur of Bali but also became the brightest highlight of our family trip. If romance is something shared between two people, then happiness is floating together in the skies above Ubud as a family of three.
