On the afternoon of August 17, a fire erupted in the basement of Ubud Market, lasting from noon until evening and still not extinguished. This incident has left 1,033 vendors unable to continue their businesses.

The fire began spreading in the market’s basement at 13:00 local time. By evening, over ten fire trucks had been dispatched to the scene, yet the blaze remained uncontrolled.

Gianyar Regional Secretary I Dewa Gede Alit Mudiarta personally inspected the firefighting efforts. He stated, ‘We are doing our utmost to extinguish the fire, prioritizing the safety of lives over the loss of vendors’ goods. As the firefighting is ongoing, we cannot yet determine the exact extent of the damages.’

According to available data, the market houses 1,033 vendors, with approximately 400 operating in the basement—the origin of the fire—who are directly affected.

Dewa Alit added, ‘We will discuss the relocation of vendors in a meeting. Our current focus is to quickly extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to other areas.’

As of now, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. It is reported that the source might have been the motorcycle parking area in the basement.
