Bali continues to face attention due to over-tourism issues, especially in South Bali, where excessive crowds from tourists have caused overcrowding. Since 2023, Bali has been listed by the World Travel & Tourism Council as a hotspot for over-tourism, alongside Athens, Paris, and Phuket.

South Bali is already suffering from over-tourism!
In early 2024, Bali once again became a focal point as severe traffic congestion on the road to Ngurah Rai International Airport forced foreign tourists and local travelers to walk to the airport (the Christmas and New Year holiday period ranked as the second busiest peak season for crowds and traffic in Bali. Here’s a short video showing the situation on the highway to the airport on December 29, 2023). Indonesian Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno acknowledged the overcrowding in South Bali and plans to divert tourists to the northern, western, and eastern regions to alleviate pressure. Measures will be announced in September.

South Bali includes the western coast areas of Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, and Uluwatu; and the eastern coast areas of Nusa Dua and Sanur.
Additionally, the Bali Airport Rail project is set to begin construction this September (refer to One of Bali’s Traffic Improvement Plans: Bali Light Rail to Start Construction in September). Authorities have issued warnings that severe traffic congestion is likely in the Kuta and Seminyak areas.
