At the end of June 2024, I returned from Bali, and this trip was filled with memories and surprises. For me, this was my second visit to Bali—the first time was to obtain my Open Water diving certification. That trip was quite hectic since the diving course took five days, leaving little time to explore other places. However, this time, I traveled with my family, and it had been twenty years since my last visit. The development of Bali amazed me—it’s much more prosperous now, and the number of both locals and tourists has more than tripled compared to two decades ago. Here are some unforgettable places and experiences from our journey:

Bali’s Traffic Situation

Traffic in Bali has always been a challenge. Regular congestion often reduces speeds to around 10 km/h, making it difficult to plan schedules. We frequently had to patiently wait in traffic jams, but if we weren’t in a hurry, we took it as an opportunity to enjoy the scenery along the way!

Taxis and Gojek

Twenty years ago, hailing a taxi in Bali could cost upwards of USD$20, which made me reluctant to leave the hotel after returning, as the transportation expenses were quite painful. Now, things have improved with the Gojek ride-hailing app, making transportation costs much more affordable and convenient, greatly enhancing our travel experience.

Bali International Airport

Bali’s airport is new and very beautiful. However, due to its limited capacity still unable to handle the massive crowds during peak season, the check-in process can take a long time, often over an hour. Therefore, it’s recommended to arrive early for check-in when departing to avoid delays.

Airport Shopping

Inside the airport, there’s a small Oakley stall selling sunglasses and backpacks. Although the selection is limited, prices are cheaper than in Taiwan. Based on my experience, brand-name products at the airport should be authentic, so shopping here is relatively reliable. Additionally, Billabong surfwear is also cheaper at the airport than in Taiwan, making it hard to resist buying a few extra pieces.

Bali’s Coffee and Chocolate

Bali produces coffee and chocolate, with JungleGold Bali offering many unique flavors. Although somewhat expensive, the packaging is exquisite, making them perfect gifts to bring home. We visited Satria Coffee Plantation, where various spices are grown, and we got to see how cocoa fruits grow on trees - a rare experience for us.

Civet Coffee

At Satria Coffee Plantation, we also experienced civet coffee. Due to the unique and somewhat unsettling production process of civet coffee, our group of four and our guide asked for extra cups to share one set. While I personally didn’t find the civet coffee particularly aromatic, this experience broadened our knowledge. Products sold in the plantation are slightly expensive, but seeing how hard the staff work to maintain the place, we bought a pack of coffee powder to show our support.

A Pork Ribs Culinary Journey

We indulged in many culinary delights during our time in Bali, but the grilled pork ribs at Naughty Nuri’s were truly exceptional. We visited both their Ubud and Sanur locations. The Sanur branch is larger and even has air-conditioned rooms, making it very comfortable. Fat Chow Bali in Kuta also served up delicious meals—we ate there twice, and despite the queues, the wait was always worth it.

Klook Surfing Lessons

We booked a beginner’s one-on-one surfing lesson at Kuta Beach through Klook, and it was incredibly affordable—just USD$20 for an hour and a half. It’s an experience definitely worth trying.

Indonesian Cuisine

Our guide, Mr. Liega, recommended Warung Kampung for authentic Indonesian cuisine. The food was delicious and affordable—fresh durian juice was just USD$1 per glass, giving us a true taste of local culinary culture.

Bali Safari & Marine Park

Although the zoo ticket price is relatively high at around USD$32 per person, we found the park beautifully incorporates Bali’s unique architectural designs. During our visit, we rode in air-conditioned safari buses, which made the experience comfortable despite the hot weather. This made us feel the ticket price was well worth it.

Jimbaran Beach Restaurants

Beachfront restaurants in Jimbaran are generally pricey, but our guide recommended Menega Cafe, which offers more affordable prices. Although it was cloudy that day and we missed the sunset, having three generations dining together abroad created a precious moment we truly cherished.

Souvenir Shopping

For souvenirs, we chose Krisna, where the peanuts and dried fruits were both delicious and inexpensive, making it hard to resist buying extra to bring home.

Nightlife Experience

Hard Rock Cafe Bali continues the Indonesian nightclub vibe with live band performances every night at 9:30 PM. The music was extremely loud, and due to the volume, we left shortly after arriving.

Whitewater Rafting Experience

We also participated in a whitewater rafting activity in Bali. Although the price was relatively high at nearly USD$65 per person, it included an all-you-can-eat local meal. Our guide helped us secure a 20% discount. While the river wasn’t too dangerous, navigating the stone steps required some physical effort. My 76-year-old mother successfully completed the experience with us.

Spotting Manta Rays at Nusa Penida

To see manta rays at Nusa Penida, it’s best to stay on the island the night before. If you’re staying elsewhere like Kuta, you’d need to wake up around 5 AM. We ultimately decided to skip this activity as we didn’t want to wake up so early.

Bali’s Culture

In Bali, every household has its own temple, and the walls are adorned with beautiful stone carvings. Our guide Mr. Fovix explained that locals pray twice daily, and no building can be taller than the temple as a sign of respect to the gods. This is why there are few tall buildings in most parts of Bali.

Conclusion

For those who love ocean views, beaches, and rice field landscapes, Bali is a place that keeps calling you back. On my next visit, I plan to explore local markets to experience the daily life of residents. With the basic wage being around USD$180 (2024), this lifestyle offers a different perspective. Through understanding local ways of life, we may gain deeper insights into the spirituality of this beautiful land. We’re extremely grateful to our two guides, Mr. Fovix and Mr. Liega, who provided invaluable advice. Mr. Fovix was a meticulous guide with excellent English skills, while Mr. Liega was honest and also proficient in English. They took us to many local spots frequented by residents, helping us save money. During meals, we always invited them to join, but they politely declined or ordered simple dishes. We deeply appreciate their thoughtful care, which helped create perfect memories of our trip.
