Bottom line: Starting in mid-August 2025, Sanur will trial a new tourist shuttle bus with a hop-on-hop-off model. The route covers Mertasari Beach, Danau Tamblingan Road, and other spots, ending near the Sanur medical special zone. The open-air design offers ventilation but can be less comfortable during heavy rain or strong winds, making it a convenient option for getting around the area on clear days.
As Sanur gradually transforms into a world-class medical and wellness tourism destination, the local government has simultaneously rolled out a new transportation option to offer travelers a more convenient experience during their stay. Starting in mid-August 2025, a new tourist shuttle bus will begin its trial operation in the Sanur area, as part of the city government’s push for smart transportation and green tourism.

This initiative, launched by the Denpasar Transportation Agency, is specifically designed for the Sanur resort area. Unlike the existing Trans Metro Dewata bus routes, the Sanur shuttle bus will operate exclusively within the Sanur area, offering visitors a hop-on-hop-off model for free movement.
The shuttle bus features an open-air design, allowing passengers to enjoy natural ventilation while taking in the scenery along the way. However, some passengers have noted that the experience may be slightly compromised during heavy rain or strong winds.
Current bus routes include:
- Mertasari Beach
- Pangembak Street
- Mertasari Street
- Danau Poso Road
- Danau Tamblingan Road
- Danau Toba Road
- Final stop: SMP Wisata area near the Sanur Special Economic Zone

Passenger Putu Ardiyasa Raditya Putra said in an interview that he had a good experience riding the full route, but pointed out that the current bus stops only have signboards, with no shelter or seating yet, and hopes for a more comfortable waiting environment in the future. He added, ‘Foreign tourists might be more accustomed to this kind of public transport, since it’s common in their countries.’

Regarding the electric shuttle (Shuttle / Bemo Listrik) in the Sanur area of Bali, here are the fares and payment methods:
1. Is it currently free?
- Now charging: The shuttle was free during its trial run in August 2025, but it has now transitioned to official operation and started charging.
- Fare: * General passengers: The single trip fare is approximately 5,000 Indonesian Rupiah (Rp 5,000).
-
- Monthly pass option: For local employees, there is also a monthly pass option at 100,000 Indonesian Rupiah per month.
2. How to Pay?
This electric shuttle uses a cashless payment system, so it’s recommended to prepare one of the following before boarding:
- E-Money Card: This is the most recommended and reliable payment method. You can use stored-value cards issued by major Indonesian banks, such as:
- Mandiri e-money
- BCA Flazz
- BNI TapCash
- BRI Brizzi
- Note: These cards can be purchased and topped up at local convenience stores (e.g., Indomaret or Alfamart).
- Contactless Credit Card: Some vehicles are equipped with contactless card readers, theoretically supporting international credit cards with contactless functionality (e.g., Visa/Mastercard). However, network issues can sometimes cause failures, so it’s safer to also have a physical e-money card as backup.
- QRIS Scan: If you have a local Indonesian mobile payment app installed (e.g., GoPay, OVO, Dana), you can usually pay by scanning the QRIS code on the vehicle.
- Cash Payment: The official policy promotes cashless transactions. While some drivers may occasionally accept cash or swipe on your behalf, traveler feedback indicates that cash payments sometimes result in higher charges (e.g., 10,000 IDR). Therefore, electronic payment is recommended.
3. Ride Information
- Operating Hours: Approximately from 06:00 or 07:00 AM until 10:00 PM (last departure around 9:00 PM).
- Route: Mainly covers Sanur’s tourist core, including Jalan Danau Tamblingan, the Mertasari area, and major popular hotels and beach entrances.
If you’re staying in Bali, this is an eco-friendly and cost-effective option for short trips!
This shuttle bus service, currently in a trial phase, is an innovative initiative by Balinese authorities to tackle traffic congestion. Officials, including Bali Governor Wayan Koster, have emphasized that improving island traffic is key not only to enhancing residents’ quality of life but also to the sustainable development of tourism.
In addition to land-based improvements, local authorities are actively developing a ‘water taxi’ service. A recently launched sea shuttle route connects Benoa and Tanjung Benoa, drastically reducing the original 30-minute drive to just 10 to 15 minutes by sea.
In the coming months, the government also plans to launch a sea express service connecting Bali Airport to Canggu, expected to go live by the end of 2025 or early 2026.
The Badung Regency government has confirmed that related plans are in their final stages, hoping this move will offer travelers a more efficient and comfortable transportation option.
