From March 28 to April 24 this year, all hiking routes on Mount Agung will be closed, with reopening expected on April 25.

The closure is due to major religious ceremonies - Tawur Tabuh Gentuh and Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh - taking place at Pura Agung Besakih at the mountain’s base. These are among the most important Hindu ceremonies in Bali.

Why close the mountain for religious ceremonies?

In Balinese belief, Mount Agung and Besakih Temple are considered one sacred entity. During major ceremonies, the entire mountain enters a “sacred time” when outsiders are not permitted to climb.

This isn’t a sudden decision but a long-standing tradition in Bali. Local communities, guides, and tourism operators are all required to comply and avoid attempting climbs during this period.

And be warned - this isn’t just a suggestion. Unauthorized entry could have serious consequences, including deportation.
