Bali Travel Diary & Recommendations: Hotels, Restaurants, the Good and the Bad!
💡 Quick Answer

Bali, an island brimming with tropical charm, is more than just a vacation destination for me—it's a place where I discover new surprises every time I visit.

Adapted from a post by group member June Lin

Bottom Line First: My stay at two hotels had polar opposite reviews—Peppers Villa in Seminyak is a strong recommendation (I give it 99 out of 100): 56 villas, attentive service, and breakfast that exceeded expectations; Hilton in Nusa Dua was a letdown: five-star price tag but subpar facilities. If you’re choosing accommodation in Seminyak, don’t hesitate to pick Peppers; for a five-star in Nusa Dua, I suggest doing more research and comparisons.

Bali, an island brimming with tropical charm, is more than just a vacation destination for me—it’s a place where I discover new surprises every time I visit. On this trip, I tried some luxurious accommodations and a few well-known restaurants, while also deeply experiencing the challenges of local transportation in Bali. I hope my sharing can offer you some useful tips and inspiration for your own Bali journey.

Accommodation Experience

During this trip, I stayed at two hotels with completely different styles—the luxurious Peppers Villa and the historic Hilton Hotel. Each place had its own unique features and highlights, but also some unexpected surprises and disappointments. Let me take you through the details of my stay at both hotels.

Peppers Villa (3 nights)

This time, we chose Peppers Villa, which recently joined the Accor group. Located in the heart of Seminyak, it’s very convenient for shopping in the city center or heading to the beach. The property has 56 villas, each designed for ultimate comfort, offering a luxurious yet cozy feel. The service was impeccable, from check-in to check-out, every detail was well taken care of. The rooms were spacious and bright, fully equipped, making me feel as relaxed as at home. Breakfast exceeded expectations—both the freshness of the ingredients and the cooking methods were satisfying. Additionally, their in-room dining service was reasonably priced with good food quality, making it one of the highlights of my stay. Overall, I give this stay a 99 out of 100.

Editor’s note: We also recommend the Peppers Seminyak Spa Experience

Hilton Nusa Dua (2 Nights)

Hilton Nusa Dua: Five-star price, subpar facilities (Photo by June Lin)

I stayed at this Hilton in the Nusa Dua resort area nine years ago. This revisit left me somewhat disappointed. First, the pool water quality was off-putting—so murky that even my son refused to get in. Second, the beach seemed to have less sand; I remember burying someone in the sand back then, but now that feeling is gone. While the breakfast spread was generous, this experience really tarnished my impression of the hotel. I wouldn’t consider staying again. I’d give this stay a 60 out of 100.

Dining Experiences

Bali’s food scene is equally exciting, from Instagram-worthy cafes to local traditional eateries, each with its own charm. On this trip, we deliberately picked several well-reviewed restaurants to try. From the decor and ambiance to the taste of the dishes, each left a lasting impression.

The Cave

We tried a few Instagram-worthy restaurants this time, and The Cave (inside The Edge) was one of them. It costs about USD$129 per person, which isn’t cheap. But if you’re looking for a unique atmosphere, it’s worth a try. The restaurant’s decor is distinctive, but given the high price, I think one visit is enough.

Oneeighty Day Club

This time, we specifically booked the VIP area at Oneeighty Day Club and got front-row seats—it felt great. The reservation fee plus meal cost about USD$48 per person. Despite the price, the food was surprisingly delicious, and the service was excellent. The infinity pool here is very deep, at 1.7 meters, so we could only snap a few photos by the pool before focusing on enjoying the meal. Overall, I’d rate this dining experience 95 out of 100.

Cretya Ubud

Cretya Ubud is a famous swing restaurant in Ubud, and it was much tastier than I expected—the flavors and textures of the dishes exceeded my imagination. As for the swing photos, this place has practically become a global gathering spot for women taking Instagram-worthy shots. Early in the morning, the swings were already crowded with people wanting to take pictures. I suggest you don’t bother with the swing that swings the farthest; the smaller ones next to it actually look better in photos. Our group ended up with a bunch of hilarious terrified expressions in our pictures. I’d give the food 90 points and the Instagram photo experience 70 points.

Ku De Ta

Ku De Ta is one of the beachfront restaurants in Seminyak, where you can enjoy delicious food while watching a stunning sunset. The service is friendly, and the live music perfectly complements the atmosphere, making it a relaxing experience. After your meal, you can take a stroll on the beach. Dinner prices are very reasonable, around USD$16-19 per person—you’d be hard-pressed to find such quality in Taiwan. I give this restaurant a 90 out of 100.

Potato Head

Potato Head is another restaurant in Seminyak and was the biggest surprise of my trip. We visited on a Saturday and enjoyed Indonesian and Balinese dishes—every single one was incredibly delicious, far exceeding my expectations. The beach next to the restaurant is also stunning, making this my top pick of the entire foodie journey. The cost per person was around USD$32, though I’ve forgotten the exact price—but it was absolutely worth it. I give this restaurant a 99 out of 100.

Potato Head

Warung Nia

Warung Nia is a very popular pork rib restaurant in central Seminyak. When we went at lunchtime, a bunch of foreigners were taking a cooking class inside. It’s a semi-open-air restaurant with no air conditioning, so the atmosphere was a bit stuffy. As for the pork ribs, I found them a little too sweet—overall, just average. I give this restaurant an 80 out of 100.

Koral

Koral

Koral is an upscale restaurant inside the Kempinski hotel. Since we had a large group, we booked three tables. Upon arrival, we were told two of the tables had been canceled, and the staff loudly claimed they had contacted me two days earlier but I didn’t reply. This really annoyed me—I was either on the beach, in the pool, or enjoying a meal, so who has time to check email? Their attitude was incredibly arrogant. If you’re not a white person dressed in designer brands, I’d advise you to spare yourself the trouble. In the end, I argued with them in English, and their attitude softened a bit, but the overall experience was terrible. I give this restaurant a 0 out of 100.

Driver Service

Transportation in Bali is truly a challenge. This time, we found an English-speaking local driver named Dwik online. His English pronunciation is excellent and easy to understand. He was always punctual and an incredibly skilled driver. Even though those of us in the back seat often nervously grabbed the handrails, he would just smile and say, ‘Take it easy.’ Most importantly, he never took us to any sketchy shops or pushed us to buy anything—this really impressed me. I value honesty, and Dwik’s performance made me feel completely at ease.

His Line ID is: kadek_dwi69.

He replies to messages very quickly, and communicating with him in English is effortless. I chose him precisely because he responds promptly after work, unlike others who seem indifferent.

Summary

總結

This Bali trip, from luxurious accommodations to authentic local cuisine, let me experience the unique charm of this island. Although there were a few hiccups along the way, they only made the journey more memorable. If you’re planning a trip to Bali, I hope my experience can offer you some practical tips to make your journey smoother and more enjoyable. Whether you’re seeking luxury or exploring local culture, Bali is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.
