Kuta Area to Undergo Major Transformation by 2026: Wider Sidewalks, No More Street Parking, Creating a Pedestrian Paradise

Bali’s most famous tourist area, Kuta, is about to undergo a dramatic transformation! To improve pedestrian experience and address long-term traffic congestion, the Badung authorities have announced a major infrastructure upgrade plan.

If you’re planning a trip to Bali soon or still remember Kuta’s streets as having ‘narrow sidewalks’ and ‘chaotic street parking,’ this news is definitely worth your attention.

Plan Highlights: Creating Pedestrian-Friendly Spaces

According to the latest development blueprint, Kuta’s redevelopment plan will focus on the following core aspects:

1. Sidewalks Widened to 4 Meters

Currently, Kuta’s sidewalks are often narrow and cluttered with obstacles. The new plan aims to widen sidewalks to approximately 4 meters in the first phase, adding greenery along the way to allow tourists to stroll comfortably in a lush environment.

2. Underground Wiring

To beautify the cityscape and enhance safety, the tangled overhead power and communication lines will be moved underground. This will clean up Kuta’s skyline, ensuring that your photos are no longer interrupted by wires!

3. Eliminate Street Parking, Establish Centralized Parking Zones

For a long time, random parking of cars and motorcycles along the streets has been a major cause of traffic bottlenecks. Authorities plan to build centralized parking facilities and subsequently prohibit street parking on main roads, effectively returning the streets to the people.

4. Introduction of Electric Public Transportation

To compensate for the transportation needs after eliminating street parking, Kuta will introduce electric public transport vehicles. Dedicated lanes or prominent colored road markings may even be implemented to ensure smooth and eco-friendly traffic flow.

Coastal Area Upgrade: 8-Meter-Wide Scenic Promenade

In addition to street renovations, Kuta’s coastline is undergoing reinforcement works to prevent erosion. Upon completion, authorities plan to construct an 8-meter-wide coastal promenade along the shore. This promenade will be divided into:

  • Pedestrian and jogging zone
  • Dedicated bicycle lane

This means that cycling and jogging along Kuta Beach will become a delightful experience in the future.

When will it start?

This ambitious renovation project is expected to officially commence in 2026. While there may be temporary inconveniences during construction, in the long run, it will transform Kuta from a congested traffic hotspot into a modern, green-energy, and pedestrian-friendly international tourist destination.

Let’s look forward to a more beautiful and cleaner Bali Kuta!
