If you’re planning to climb Mount Agung in Bali during this period, you’ll need to pause those plans.

Mount Agung completely closed from late March to late April
All hiking routes on Mount Agung will be closed from March 28 to April 24 this year, with reopening expected on April 25.
The closure is due to major religious ceremonies - Tawur Tabuh Gentuh and Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh - taking place at Pura Agung Besakih at the mountain’s base. These are among the most important Hindu ceremonies in Bali.
Why close the mountain for religious ceremonies?
In Balinese belief, Mount Agung and Besakih Temple are considered one sacred entity. During major ceremonies, the entire mountain enters a “sacred time” when outsiders are not permitted to climb.
This isn’t a sudden decision but a long-standing tradition in Bali. Local communities, guides, and tourism operators are all required to respect this closure and avoid attempting hikes during this period.
It’s important to note - this isn’t just a suggestion. Unauthorized entry could have serious consequences, including deportation.

Where to Hike Instead During This Period?
If your trip happens to fall during this time, here are some alternative options:
- Mount Abang: Much less crowded than Mount Agung, but equally beautiful with fewer people
- Mount Batur: Bali’s most classic sunrise hiking route, low difficulty with great views, perfect for first-time hikers
- Mount Ijen + Mount Bromo in Java: If you have enough time and want to go big, these are Indonesia’s most spectacular volcanoes, worth a special trip
Just Go After April 25th
Mount Agung isn’t inaccessible, you just need to avoid this timing. After reopening on April 25th, everything will be normal again. If you want to hike, simply push your itinerary back a few days.
Bali’s religious culture is one of its most unique aspects. Respecting local rituals is part of the travel experience.
