What is eVoA?

eVoA (Electronic Visa on Arrival) is a convenient visa service introduced by the Indonesian government, allowing foreign travelers to apply for an electronic visa before arriving in Indonesia. This initiative aims to promote tourism and attract foreign investment by simplifying the visa process and providing a smoother entry experience for travelers.

Countries Eligible for Visa-Free Entry to Indonesia

Currently, the eVoA service is available to travelers from 97 countries, including Australia, the UK, the US, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, and India. Travelers can complete all procedures through the online system.

Countries eligible for visa-free entry to Indonesia are mostly ASEAN member states. As of August 29, 2024, the following 13 countries are exempt from visa requirements:

  • Brunei
  • Philippines
  • Cambodia
  • Laos
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
  • Singapore
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam
  • East Timor
  • Suriname
  • Colombia
  • Hong Kong

The next wave of visa-exempt countries is expected to be announced by the end of January 2025.

The Challenges of Indonesia’s Previous System

In the past, the visa application process was cumbersome and not fully digitized, causing inconvenience for many travelers upon entry. Starting in 2023, Silmy Karim, the Director General of Immigration in Indonesia, has spearheaded a comprehensive digital upgrade, aiming to set a benchmark for immigration services. This initiative includes partnering with VFS Global to launch the eVoA service.

Leave It to the Professionals! VFS Global Enhances Travel to Indonesia

To improve the quality of entry visa services, the Indonesian government has appointed VFS Global as the exclusive partner for eVoA, offering a safer and more user-friendly application process. VFS Global is currently the primary visa application service provider for 67 countries, operating over 3,400 visa centers across 153 countries worldwide. Headquartered in Zurich and Dubai, the company is primarily owned by investment funds managed by Blackstone Inc., a U.S. private equity firm, and receives funding from the Swiss Kuoni and Hugentobler Foundation and EQT funds.

Travelers will now only need to fill out a simple form, upload passport information, and pay the visa fee (currently IDR 500,000), after which they will receive the eVoA via email. This can be presented directly upon entry or used at automated gates.

VFS Global is set to officially launch in early December, coinciding with the peak travel season at the end of the year, when approximately one million international tourists flock to Bali annually. The Indonesian government hopes for a smooth transition to ensure that travelers’ entry experiences remain unaffected. The new system also offers multilingual support, including English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, along with dedicated email and live chat services to assist travelers in completing their visa applications more easily.
