Who would have thought that while enjoying the sunset on the beautiful beaches of Bali, this serene moment could become a stage for scammers? Today, I want to share a personal experience to remind everyone to stay alert during their Bali trip to avoid falling into fraud traps.

The ‘Foreigner’ Scam on the Beach

This incident happened on the last night of my family’s trip to Bali. We were strolling on the beach, with waves gently lapping the shore and the sunset painting the sky red, creating a romantic and relaxing atmosphere. However, at this moment, two strangers caught our attention—a man and a woman who appeared to be from the Middle East. They greeted us warmly, asked where we were from, and shared seemingly harmless topics.

Exposing the Scam: Starting with Currency

Their conversation gradually shifted to our currency, expressing curiosity about ‘never having seen Taiwanese/Hong Kong/Malaysian banknotes before.’ They then opened their wallets to show stacks of US dollars, seemingly implying they were also tourists, subtly building a ‘friendly mutual trust.’ They then asked us to show our currency, as if it were just a ‘cultural exchange.’

At this point, my husband was about to reach for his wallet to show our banknotes. However, my intuition told me something was off. When they tried to get closer to see our wallet clearly, I quickly stopped my husband, simply told these ‘curious foreigners’ that ‘we’re not interested,’ and walked away swiftly. The pair looked displeased but didn’t pursue further.

Tips to Avoid Scams

Afterward, I realized this was likely a scam tactic. This ‘currency display’ method often lulls tourists into a false sense of security, distracting them and even giving scammers a chance to ‘exchange’ or ‘steal’ travelers’ money. Although we prevented the scam this time, this experience reminded my family and me to stay vigilant during travels, no matter how relaxed the environment may seem.

This is actually a long-standing scam, and the perpetrators may be well-dressed, attractive individuals who lower your guard. In these types of scams, the fraudsters typically use distraction techniques to achieve their goals. They might make requests like ‘Let’s see the currency from your country,’ which lulls the victim into a false sense of security and prompts them to open their wallet. Once the victim displays the bills or starts rummaging through their wallet, the scammer moves closer, observes where the cash is kept, or even pretends to be friendly by reaching out, all while performing subtle actions like quickly grabbing a few bills.

Another common tactic is ‘switching’: The scammer may request to examine your bills and replace them with similar-looking paper or worthless foreign currency. By the time the victim notices the missing money, the scammer has already disappeared into the beach crowd, leaving you defenseless.

In essence, the core of these scams is to distract the victim, making them unknowingly lose their belongings. Therefore, when strangers make requests to handle your valuables, always stay alert and avoid giving them any opportunity.

To ensure everyone’s safety while traveling in Bali, here are a few reminders:

Keep your distance from strangers: Even if someone seems friendly, maintain an appropriate distance to prevent them from getting close to your belongings.
Be wary of ‘curious’ topics: When the conversation shifts to your valuables or personal privacy, stay vigilant, respond briefly, and end the conversation quickly.
Always protect your belongings: When out and about, avoid casually displaying cash or valuables, especially in unfamiliar environments where others might see what you’re carrying.
Trust your instincts: If something feels off, trust your gut and quickly remove yourself from the situation or decline suspicious requests.
These scenarios can happen anywhere: While we encountered these scammers on the beach, they could appear anywhere in Bali!
Watch out for male-female pairs: Many of these scams involve a male-female duo.
