However, this doesn’t mean tourists can completely let their guard down.
Recently, villa burglaries and motorcycle taxi robberies have made headlines. While these incidents are terrifying for the victims, they serve as a reminder that even on vacation, it’s important to stay alert.
Fake Motorcycle Taxi Robbery
Police arrested a 22-year-old Balinese man, Ketut Manih, this week for posing as a motorcycle taxi driver and stealing a gold necklace from a 37-year-old Australian tourist in Legian.
According to police, the incident occurred at 2:40 AM on September 16th on Jalan Kubu Anyar Gang Sada Sari in Legian. The victim, GHK, was walking back to his accommodation when Manih stopped him and offered him a cheap ride back.

GHK accepted the offer, and they agreed on a price. After getting on the motorcycle, Manih turned onto Kubu Anyar Street and then into Sada Sari alley.
When they reached the alley, Manih suddenly stopped the motorcycle and pushed it onto GHK. While GHK was struggling to push the bike away, Manih forcibly removed his gold necklace and fled on the motorcycle. The necklace is reportedly worth up to $16,000.
當他們抵達巷子時,Manih突然停下摩托車,把車推倒在GHK身上。GHK還在掙扎著要把車推開時,Manih已經把他的金項鍊強行扯下,然後騎車逃跑。據說這條項鍊價值高達16,000美金。
AKP I Ketut Sukadi, the public relations officer of the Denpasar Police, confirmed that Manih was successfully located through surveillance footage and license plate tracking.
“In addition to arresting the suspect, we also seized evidence of the crime, including a gold necklace with a cross pendant, and the N Max DK 5289 ADF motorcycle the suspect was riding at the time,” he said.
Manih stated that he decided to commit the robbery due to financial difficulties, claiming he was not part of any criminal group and had never done anything like this before. However, these statements did not help him escape his predicament.
“The suspect admitted to stealing the victim’s necklace with the intention of selling it to cover daily living expenses,” he said. Manih will face charges under Article 362 of the Criminal Code for theft, which carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison.
Villa Robbery
Meanwhile, in Canggu Pererenan village, a group of TikTok influencers also experienced a villa robbery.

TikTok personalities Dr. Richard Lee, Willie Salim, Kenneth Seymour, and Regiena Shaelynne were staying at a villa on Jalan Babadan. They left the villa at 9:30 AM on September 21 to go sightseeing, and upon returning at 6 PM, they discovered that a MacBook Pro M2, an iPad Pro M1, a camera, an iPhone, and several million Indonesian rupiah in cash were all missing.
Ipda I Putu Sukarma, the public relations officer of the Badung Police, stated that the case is currently under investigation.
“According to the report, the losses amount to several million rupiah, and the investigation is ongoing,” he said.
He also mentioned that the thieves had forcibly entered the property.
Police remind tourists to properly secure their valuables when going out, especially when staying in independent private villas. If the villa does not provide a safe, guests should proactively contact the host to find a secure place to store valuable items. Additionally, everyone should be cautious when tagging villa locations or uploading photos on social media, particularly those showing valuables, to avoid attracting unnecessary attention.
Final Reminder
Although Bali is generally a relatively safe vacation destination, tourists still need to maintain basic safety awareness, especially when it’s easy to let one’s guard down during holiday enjoyment. Whether encountering individual crimes like fake taxis or more organized activities such as villa thefts, prevention is always better than dealing with the aftermath. Keeping valuables secure, not casually revealing one’s whereabouts, or displaying expensive items are simple ways to protect oneself from unnecessary trouble.
