With Ubud Art Market closed, what alternative shopping options are available for tourists?

Ubud Art Market, one of Bali’s most famous tourist attractions, has drawn countless visitors to purchase local art and handicrafts. However, following a devastating fire last week and subsequent cleanup efforts, this bustling market will remain closed for the near future. The fire occurred on August 17, 2024, destroying the new market building and dealing a significant blow to the local economy and thousands of vendors.

The Destructive Impact of the Fire

According to official data, the fire destroyed the market’s basement and first floor, severely damaging over 400 stalls. Many vendors lost their goods irreparably, while others, whose goods were spared from the flames, cannot retrieve them due to structural damage. Security personnel and police remain on guard around the market, preventing vendors from inspecting their stalls, especially those on the first floor’s east side, where water damage from firefighting efforts has made the extent of damage unpredictable.

The Cause of the Fire

Commissioner Pol Jansen Avitus Panjaitan, the public relations head of the Bali Police, provided an update on the fire investigation during a press conference on August 23. Based on the Bali Police Fire Laboratory’s findings, the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. Authorities are conducting further investigations to determine if any negligence by security personnel contributed to the disaster. He emphasized that such an incident should not recur and hopes the investigation will serve as a deterrent to those responsible.
