Several potential sites for major earthquakes in Indonesia

The southern part of Bali is indeed one of the high-risk areas located at such tectonic plate boundaries. This zone stretches from Aceh Province in Indonesia, through North Sumatra, West Sumatra, extending to the Sunda Strait, southern Java, and finally to the waters south of Bali and Lombok. Since these areas are situated at plate boundaries, they are all susceptible to megathrust earthquakes.
Irwan emphasized that the characteristics of such earthquakes include their large magnitude and the frequent occurrence of tsunamis. He explained that a thrust fault involves vertical movement of tectonic plates beneath the sea, causing seawater to rise and trigger tsunamis. While these potential risks cannot be ignored, he urged the public not to panic but to be well-prepared to face possible earthquake disasters.
Regarding the specific timing of earthquakes, Irwan stated that scientists currently cannot accurately predict when such earthquakes will occur. He reminded the public to understand that these are risk estimates rather than precise predictions. He reiterated that the most important thing is to remain vigilant and take preventive measures, rather than causing unnecessary panic. He hopes that even with these potential risks, we can reduce possible disaster impacts through preparation.
This region has not experienced a particularly large earthquake for over 100 years. Experts say that the arrival of an earthquake is ‘only a matter of time’!
Significant Increase in Earthquakes in Bali in 2024
Located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Bali recorded 582 earthquakes in 2024, significantly more than the 324 recorded in 2023. The vast majority were below magnitude 3.0, with 117 between 3.1 and 5.0, and none exceeding magnitude 5.0. In September, two earthquakes of magnitudes 4.8 and 4.9 in the Ubud area had notable impacts.
峇里島因位於太平洋火環帶,2024年記錄了582次地震,遠超2023年的324次。絕大多數震級低於3.0,117次介於3.1至5.0,未超過5.0級。9月,烏布地區兩次4.8和4.9級地震影響顯著。
Disaster Preparedness and Response
Major tourist areas like Kuta and Seminyak face risks of earthquakes and tsunamis. Local tsunami evacuation signs are in place, and visitors are advised to inquire about evacuation routes and safe locations when checking in. In the event of a strong earthquake, immediately move away from buildings and beaches, seeking higher ground for safety.
