Bali Currency Exchange: Large Bills or Small Bills? The Ultimate Guide!

In Bali, there are numerous currency exchange locations, from airports to hotels, and exchange offices throughout the city. However, exchange rates can vary. Therefore, it’s best to understand the local exchange rates before exchanging currency.

In Bali, common USD denominations include $100, $50, $20, $10, and $5. Different denominations may have varying exchange rates when converting currency.

Exchange Rate Differences Between Large and Small USD Bills

Generally, when exchanging USD in Bali, Money Changers categorize USD into three types: Large bills ($100, $50) tend to have better exchange rates; small bills ($20, $10, $5) have worse rates; and $1 bills have the worst rates.

Below is the exchange rate table for currency exchange in Bali on May 1, 2024. When exchanging currency, we should look at the ‘buying’ price. Let’s take a look:

一般而言,在峇里島使用美金換匯時,Money Changer會將美金分為三種:美金大鈔(100美元、50美元)的匯率相對較優;小鈔(20美元、10美元、5美元)的匯率則較差;1美元的鈔票則匯率最差。

以下是2024, 05, 01在峇里島換匯的匯率表,換匯的時候我們要看的是「買入 (buying)」價。讓我們來看一下:

Does It Really Make a Big Difference?

When exchanging currency, we usually think that carrying $100 and $50 bills will get us the most Indonesian Rupiah. However, if you look at it differently, suppose you bring $1,000 in $20, $10, and $5 bills to exchange into IDR. Compared to $100 and $50 bills, you lose 20 IDR (about USD$0.001) per dollar exchanged. For $1,000, you’d lose a total of USD$40…

Now, imagine you bring 1,000 $1 bills to Bali for exchange. Compared to larger bills, you lose 275 IDR (about USD$0.009) per dollar exchanged. For $1,000, you’d lose a total of USD$550… Not exactly a bank-breaking amount, right?
