Bali does have tissues and toilet paper, but you might not find them when you need them. This is because in Southeast Asian countries, they typically use a device called a ‘bum gun’ - spraying water while cleaning with their hands.

For many, this cleaning method can be shocking and unacceptable. However, it’s actually more hygienic than using toilet paper. Many studies show that washing with water is more effective at removing residue while reducing the risk of skin irritation and infection.

Some public toilets and restaurants in Bali don’t provide toilet paper. If you can’t accept using the ‘bum gun’, it’s best to carry your own toilet paper.

Additionally, Bali’s sewage system can’t handle toilet paper and wet wipes, so remember to dispose of them in the trash bin after use.

Encountering different cultures and lifestyles during travel is a rich and valuable experience. While the ‘bum gun’ culture may seem strange and surprising, being open to accepting and respecting local customs will make your journey more colorful.
